A Bit-of-History Today's synchronized swimmers mesmerize their audiences with their grace and beauty, exhibiting total control of their bodies in an unstable medium. The sport combines the pleasing attributes of ballet with the strength and control of gymnastics. Originally referred to as "water ballet," the synchronized swimmer combines athletic ability and creative style. Competitions began in England at the turn of the century, where streams, holes, and ponds were the venues, and natatoruims were years away. The modern version of the sport was instituted in the U.S. in 1916, by Katherine Curtis, a swimmer for the University of Wisconsin. The phrase "synchronized swimming" was coined by a radio announcer while broadcasting the 1934 World's Fair. The sport was later popularized by Esther Williams , a U.S. 100 meter freestyle champion at the 1939 World's Fair, and her subsequent Hollywood movies. Williams’ presence gave synchronized swimming two qualities it had been missing; recognition and a national audience. The first competition in America was held at Wright Junior College in 1939, between Wright Junior College and the Chicago Teacher’s Union. The eight nations that have qualified for the Olympics are: U.S., Canada, Japan, Russia, France, China, Italy, and Mexico. This is also the order they finished in the 1995 World Cup Competition at the Georgia Tech. facility. The American team has been ranked number one since 1991.

Home Parks and Recreation Hall of Fame Aquatic Complex History Fort Lauderdale's swimming heritage dates back to the Civitan raft off Las Olas Boulevard and the monumental Casino Pool, which followed in 1928. As the first pool of Olympic size (50m x 20m) in Florida, it remained at the forefront of the swimming scene for nearly half a century and consequently witnessed a great deal of American swimming history. Located directly on the beach at what is now known as D.C. Alexander Park, just south of Las Olas Boulevard, this beautiful Spanish-style facility was engineered by Clifford Root and filled twice a week with salt water directly from the Atlantic Ocean.. The Casino Pool (1928-1966) was home to the nation's top swimmers for decades, namely, Katherine Rawls , Fort Lauderdale's first celebrity of sport and international athletic ambassador. The pool cost $150,000, and measured 50.38 meters by 18.3 meters, or 20 yards by 55 yards.
