http://www.goodwillgames.com/current/synchro.html
For Release: April 30 World's Elite to Perform Synchronized Swimming Duets, Team Routines at 1998 Goodwill Games Team Competition Included for First Time in Games' History Eight of the world's finest duet and team squads will showcase a host of international synchronized swimming talents at the brand new Nassau County Goodwill Games Swimming and Diving Center. Goodwill Games representatives announced today that the synchronized swimming squads of the United States, Canada, China, France, Italy, Japan, Korea and Russia have accepted invitations to compete, July 19-20, in the 1998 Goodwill Games. The announcement came at a press conference held for the dedication of the new multi-million dollar aquatics facility in Nassau County. Synchronized swimming became a part of the Goodwill Games program in 1990 with the solo and duet disciplines. This year marks the first time in Goodwill Games history that the team competition will be contested. "The synchronized swimming team competition has been added to our program format because of tremendous demand from the public," said Goodwill Games President Mike Plant. "The U.S. women's perfect 10's in 1996 at the Atlanta Olympics set the stage and brought new levels of interest to the sport. We hope to enhance that this summer. To watch these young athletes perform in perfect unison is breathtaking."

The History of Swimming Pools By Mary Bellis Swimming as an organized activity goes back as far as 2500 B.C. in ancient Egypt and later in ancient Greece, Rome, and Assyria. In Rome and Greece, swimming was part of the education of elementary age boys and the Romans built the first pools (separate from bathing pools). The first heated swimming pool was built by Gaius Maecenas of Rome in the first century BC. Gaius Maecenas was a rich Roman lord and considered one of the first patron of arts - he supported the famous poets Horace, Virgil, and Propertius, making it possible for them to live and write without fear of poverty. However, swimming pools did not became popular until the middle of the 19th century. By 1837, six indoor pools with diving boards were built in London, England. After the modern Olympic Games began in 1896 and swimming races were among the original events, the popularity of swimming pools began to spread - Reference Britannica

In the 60's, the countries that were affiliated to the Olympic Committee, had the chance to participate in a number of clinics that were given in Mexico. On 1st October 1979, Carla Parisius and Mildred Clara went to Mexico to follow the synchronized swimming clinic. When the Nederlandse Antilliaanse ZwemBond ( Netherlands Antilles Swimming Federation ) got the list regarding swimming clinics, they contacted Mildred Clara, for she coached swimming in Curaçao. Mildred could choose between swimming, synchronized swimming, diving and waterpolo. She chose synchronized swimming, because swimming and waterpolo already existed. Mildred Clara Carla Parisius was a good friend of Mildred and she talked
Carla in to accompanying her to Mexico, where they stayed there
for 2 months. Upon their return, they made many attempts to get
at least 1 hour a week at our local olympic swimming pool, which
was a part of our sport complex called "Sentro Deportivo Korsou"
( Curaçao Sports Center ). The result of their attempts was that
they got the opportunity to use the pool on Wednesdays between
6 and 7 pm. The first training took place on (-). The

Being an Olympic year, the first of the new millennium, the Associations prime focus was therefore to prepare the strongest team possible. In April, our National Team set the pace with a strong showing at the CARIFTA Games in Barbados and followed this with an even better showing at the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships in Aruba. But the best was saved for last, as all Jamaicans proudly cheered on Janelle Atkinson and Angela Chuck as they competed in they competed in the Sydney Olympics.
While Chuck preformed credibly in the 50 M Freestyle, and played an important supporting role for Atkinson, Atkinson captured the imagination of the Jamaican public as she swam the 400 M Freestyle finishing fourth in a new personal best and National Record time. Atkinson?s strong fighting spirit in the pool mixed with humility and obvious satisfaction with her achievements is an example for all. Janelle Atkinson, like Andrew Phillips in 1984, as well as our swimmers who participated in the CARIFTA Games and CISC clearly demonstrated that Jamaican?s can compete head to head, not only with our Caribbean friends, but also with the best in the World - we must get that message our loud and clear!

Making Olympic History New York Times At the first modern Olympics in 1896, Melpomene became the first female to compete, although unofficially, in the games. Women have made many advancements in the Olympic games over the past 100 years and it appears that the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia will benefit them more than ever before. Two new sports have been added to the games, increasing the total number of sports to twenty-eight. In addition, Sydney will incorporate more than twenty new women's events into its program. This is twenty more than were seen in the Atlanta games in 1996. For the first time in Olympic competition, the Modern Pentathlon, Water Polo, and Weightlifting will include events for women. Athletic, Aquatic, and Shooting sports are also adding more women's events. Two sports being added to the Olympic agenda are the Triathlon and Mia Hamm (white jersey) battles for the ball during the U.S. women’s 2-0 victory over Norway. (USA Today)

I like Charles Barkley, and I’ve defended him in the past against those who would label him a self-promoting, egotistical loudmouth. But Sir Charles should limit his diatribes to topics he actually knows something about. The notion that modifications to Augusta National are a racist plot to stymie Tiger Woods is so laughable, it doesn’t bear discussion.
You gotta love Seve Ballesteros. Seve hasn’t won a tournament of any kind since 1995, and his last major championship came in 1988 at the British Open. His notorious wildness off the tee spiraled out of control during the 1990s, and his career as a competitive golfer gave way to his role as elder statesman and figurehead for the European Ryder Cup team. But Seve still thinks he has a little magic left. "I think I can win The Masters," he said. "You may sound surprised, but I am very confident this year. I have a very good feeling in myself. I am capable of winning. I'm talking very serious." Of course, during the same interview, Ballesteros all but said that Sergio Garcia (three PGA wins) was better than Tiger Woods (29 PGA wins). Maybe Seve was just having a senior moment.

The Olympic Nice Natation - Water polo is a Nice club with a European dimension. It has several international players, who have been selected in various France teams: RESULTS OF THE SEASON 98-99: ONCE AGAIN, THE TEAM IS CHAMPION OF FRANCE The ONN water-polo team has successfully won the title of Champion of France in 1999 by defeating its eternal rival: t he Cercle des Nageurs of Marseille. This title allows it to rise to the most prestigious European Cup in this discipline: the European Cup of Champion Clubs. At the end of this European Cup, the Nice players have come in the very closed club of the best 8 European teams. As a matter of interest, the best French performance at this level of competition was one of the ONN which went to the semi-finals of the European Cup of Champion Clubs in 1993. After it had won the first leg at the Jean Boin swimming pool, the Nice team was defeated in Zagreb during the terrible event of a "sudden death" situation against the team which was the European Champion: the Croatians from Split.
