OVERVIEW OF THE LANGUAGE
S wedish is an Indo-European language of the North Germanic Group. Swedish is the official language of Sweden, but has also been spoken by Swedish-speaking Finns in Finland since over a thousand years ago. Finland belonged to Sweden for several hundred years between the 13th century and 1809, when Russia conquered the country. In 1863 a law gave the Finnish-speaking Finns the same rights as the Swedish-speaking population. After Finland had gained its independence, the constitution of 1919 states that Finnish and Swedish are the national languages of the Republic.
OVERVIEW OF THE MEDIA
Media marked with an asterisk are described in further detail in the media database The state-owned radio and TV company, Yleisradio* (Rundradion* in Swedish) has one Swedish nationwide radio channel, Riksradion*, as well as five regional radio stations. There is also a TV channel, FST* (Finlands Svenska Television) which broadcasts over 20 hours a week alternating between the two state-owned TV channels, TV1* and TV2*.
The programmes range from 30 minutes of news in Swedish daily to childrens programmes, soaps, documentaries and so on.

Assyrians May Be Recognized as a Minority in Turkey
According to the new Bill on Pious Foundations, which has been presented to the Ministerial Council for signature, for the first time the Lausanne Peace Treaty signed on 24 July 1923 is being violated. In the bill prepared by the Directorate General of Pious Foundations, Assyrians have been listed among minorities living in Turkey. According to the Lausanne Treaty, in force for 79 years, [only] the Greeks, Armenians and Jews were recognised as minorities.
In the reasons for the Bill, prepared under the leadership of Pious Foundations Director-General Nurettin Yardimci, it is stated that groups which have cohesive race, language and religious characteristics and want to live together among the majority are identified as congregations [cemaat]. “In our country there are four non-Muslim [communities] which fit to this description: The Greek, the Armenian, the Jewish and the Assyrian communities”. The law on minorities was specified in the Lausanne Treaty signed on 24 July 1923. According to the Lausanne Treaty, among the non-Muslim in Turkey only the Greeks, the Armenians and the Jews were defined as minorities. In the Turkish legal lexicon, the terms minorities and congregations are used synonymously. It is worthy of note that in the Bill only the Assyrians are viewed as “minority”. The new Pious Foundation Bill, which is awaiting government approval, completely changes the status of the pious foundations belonging to minorities.

    INTRODUCTION
This document contains a list of languages and their associated three-character alphabetic codes. The purpose of this list is to allow the designation of the language or languages in MARC records. The list contains 437 discrete codes, of which 54 are used for groups of languages.
    CHANGES IN 2000 EDITION
This list includes all valid codes and code assignments as of February 2000. This revised edition includes numerous changes necessary for compatibility with the newly approved ISO 639-2 in 1998 (Codes for the Representation of Names of Languages Part 2: Alpha-3 Code ). There are 26 code changes, 1 deletion, and 35 additions in this revision ( change list Go to top of document
    STRUCTURE OF THE CODES
The language codes are three-character lowercase alphabetic strings usually based on the first three letters of the English form or, in some cases, vernacular of the corresponding language name. The codes are varied where necessary to resolve conflicts. In the case of modern and older forms of some languages, the initial letters of each part of the language name are used to form the code, e.g.

AUGUSTANA COLLEGE SUMMER SCHOOL IN SWEDEN 2002 (ASSIS 18) The Augustana College Summer School in Sweden (ASSIS) offers five weeks of intensive Swedish language instruction in a setting conducive to its retention and practical application at Grebbestads folkhögskola in the village of Grebbestad on the Swedish west coast. The program culminates with a week in Stockholm, the Swedish capital, and runs from May 31 through July 14, 2002. The deadline for applications is April 1, 2002, but we encourage all interested persons to contact us as soon as possible to receive further information and application materials. The program is arranged by Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, a private coeducational college of liberal arts and sciences, founded by Swedish immigrants in 1860. The College's Department of Scandinavian Studies is the largest of its kind in the United States, and the strong ties to Sweden have resulted in reciprocal exchange programs with two Swedish universities, scholarships that enable Swedish students to study at Augustana, and, since 1982, the Augustana Summer School in Sweden. The folkhögskola in Grebbestad is just over 100 years old. Like its 130-odd counterparts all over Sweden, its main objective is adult and community education. All students board at the school, which is relatively small only about seventy or so students during the academic year. During the past decades
