      Bullying and harassment
Bullying, harassment, discrimination and violence are abuses of power that jeopardise the rights of others. These behaviours are seen at school, in the workplace, in the community, at home and in the media. They can affect anyone - students, staff and parents or carers. Education Queensland's school communities are working to make school environments safer, more supportive and respectful for all young people and adults - places where everyone is free from bullying, harassment, discrimination and violence.

A Policy Brief for Administrators
Strengthening School Guidance Programs in Missouri for the 21st Century
The Need
As we enter the 21st century, the United States and the state of Missouri continue to undergo substantial changes industrially, occupationally, socially and economically. These changes are creating substantial challenges for students in Missouri. A rapidly changing work world and labor force; violence in homes, schools and communities; divorce; teenage suicide; substance abuse; and sexual experimentation are just a few examples of these challenges. These challenges are real and they are having substantial impact on the personal/social, career and academic development of students. A Response Comprehensive school guidance programs in Missouri, implemented by certified, professional school counselors, in collaboration with parents, teachers and administrators, are effective in assisting students to respond to these and similar challenges. Empirical research conducted in the state of Missouri during the past five years has shown that when certified, professional school counselors have the time, the resources and the structure of a comprehensive guidance program to work in, they contribute to positive student academic and career development as well as the development of positive and safe learning climates in schools. * Students (22,964) in 236 small, medium and large size high schools in Missouri with more fully implemented guidance programs as judged by school counselors reported that:

Public Health Nurses (PHNs) are employed by the hospital and provide health services to the high schools in Taranaki. They have weekly health clinics at each school. You can see the PHN about any health problems or concerns. The sort of stuff they deal with includes physical, emotional, sexual, and social problems. The PHN will listen, provide information, give help and advice. They can make suggestions about other people who can assist you if they are unable to. They provide a confidential service, so they won't tell anybody else about the things you say (unless they are worried about your safety or you say it's ok). For information about when the Public Health Nurse visits your school click on the name of the school that you go to. The Public Health Nurse who visits Francis Douglas is Rose Taylor. Her clinics are held every Friday at lunchtime in the sick bay area. You can get to see young Rose by making an appointment at the school office, showing up at the sick bay on Friday, or calling Rose on (06) 753 7790 ex 8772 and leaving her a message to say that you want to see her. Conclusions
1. Gifted and talented students actively engaged in challenging programmatic options appear to be reasonably well-adjusted in terms of self-concept and social competence. The influence of a program upon this adjustment is not clear, nor can one ensure that program identification procedures contribute to adjustment. (Are only those who “behave” nominated for such programs?) 2. There are qualitative differences in motivational levels and in social and emotional issues related to school performance among the culturally diverse and economically disadvantaged populations of gifted students. The striving for racial identity may help to explain these differences among the culturally diverse, and the lack of access to choice of programs and materials may explain differences among the economically disadvantaged. 3. Early childhood learning experiences and respectful/authoritative parenting strategies contribute greatly to healthy personality development among gifted individuals.

Recent Research on . . .
Guidance, Counseling and Therapy for the Gifted
A survey of recent research studies on guidance and counseling issues, techniques, and practices reveals that 82 publications (35 studies) have been released in the past 7 years. The issues touched upon in these studies (in order of prevalence) include therapeutic interventions or alternative counseling strategies (21), interventions for gifted girls (10), diversity issues (9), career identity/career counseling (8), family relationships, therapy (7), adolescent issues (7), disability, motivation issues (5), mIddle childhood issues (3), young child issues (2), musical giftedness (2), early college admittants (2), and scientists (1). Conclusions 1. Although there does not seem to be evidence that the gifted are more prone to suicide, underachievement, dropping out, or delinquency, there seems to be proportionally higher incidences of perfectionism, stress and burnout. The affective issues of the gifted cannot be ignored by school counselors and teachers just because they don't show up in larger than expected numbers as problematic for chemical dependency, alcoholism, promiscuity, or truancy. Counseling for this group should be focused on prevention, a proactive role.

Depression in children is quite common. This section will help parents understand, identify, and deal with the problem of depression in their children. What is depression? Depression is an unhappy mood that affects our daily functioning. When depression is too severe or lasts too long it can be considered an illness. Left untreated, depression can take the joy out of life, and even remove the desire to live. Everyone experiences minor upsets, but this does not mean that everyone is depressed. To have a true depression the symptoms must be present for at least two weeks. Please understand that the following material relates to symptoms that have been present for this amount of time. Back to top How common is depression? Depression in children is far more common than most people realize and is equally divided among boys and girls. A study at the Child Guidance Center in 1983 found that one our of three children referred was depressed. A recent University study found that one of ten children without known problems had suicidal thoughts.
