The broad objectives of the proposal submitted by the school were to focus on Junior Cycle students (especially those at risk of leaving before Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate) and to build on existing links with Business in the Community,' local Partnerships, Access Programmes to third level institutions and scholarship provision. The school lies in the heart of inner city Dublin and has all the attendant problems of such an area- high unemployment, poor housing conditions, no sporting facilities, serious vandalism, students orphaned due to AIDS and drug abuse, and a high dropout rate - 30% approximately of students who started in 1996 did not sit the Leaving Certificate in 2001. Approximately three students continued to third level. Most of the students' parents, who come from the surrounding flat complexes (Fatima Mansions, Teresa's Gardens, St. Michael's Estate) were also early school leavers and have a negative attitude to education while those with a more positive attitude have very low expectations. Many of the students are seriously unmotivated and have very poor self-esteem as a consequence of their socio-economic background.

Suicide Prevention The suicide rate for adolescents has more than doubled since the 1960s. So the challenge for parents and educators is to be able to tell the difference between normal teen mood swings and clinical despair. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says the "suicide rate is six times higher among males than females, ages 15 to 19 years, with Native American males having the highest suicide rate." The AAP also pointed out that "firearms were used in 67% of all adolescent suicides and are the leading cause of death by suicide." Time magazine (May 15, 2000) points out that males act very differnetly from females when it comes to suicide. Attempts are commn among girls, but completion is quite rare. "Boys are five time as likely to commit suicide, and they're much less likely to talk about it," says psychiatrist David Schaffer, president of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. "If a boy talks about suicide, that statistically carries a far higher risk of some tragedy occuring than when a girl does." There is this notion about depression and suicide, that if you ask or mention the subject, you're going to make it happen. Kay Jamison, professor of psychiatry at John Hopkins School of Medicine says, that quite the contrary is true. "Talking with a son or daughter about dark feelings will help assuage the sense of hopelessness the child may have."
