A brief history First settled around 5000 BC by the peace-loving Ciboney, then by the Arawaks and the war-like Caribs, St Vincent has had a colourful and turbulent history. A Dutch slave ship, wrecked off Bequia in 1675, brought the first Africans who inter-married to create the Black Caribs whose descendants live here today. Fought over for nearly a century by the French and British, sovereignty was settled on the British in 1783. Today, St Vincent and The Grenadines is an independent democracy and part of the British Commonwealth. The fascinating blend of African, Indian, Asian and European influences are expressed in the lifestyle of the people; through religion, sport, music, cuisine, arts and crafts. The annual carnival (Vincy Mas') is a showcase for the best in calypso singing, steelpan orchestras, soca music and masquerade costumes. Cricket and soccer matches are played and watched with a passion. Hiking and Biking
Sailor's Cycle Centre was established April 14, 1982. Sailor's has built a solid reputation as the leader in the bicycle and fitness industry in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Sailor's also recognizes that cycling and hiking provides entertainment for the entire family. Therefore, "Family Day" was introduced with the aim of bringing the family together through riding. Sailor's Cycle Center is located in Kingstown, the capital of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. 100 miles west of Barbados, St. Vincent is roughly 18 miles long and 11 miles wide. It is very mountainous, with peaks rising to over 4,000 ft in the north. Though cultivated mainly with Bananas, Coconuts and Arrowroot, the island has retained much of its natural rain forest. The islands are geographically divided into "inner" and "outer" chains. The inner islands are volcanic in origin, and are characterized by rugged, mountainous terrain, heavy rainfall and lush vegetation. The high points of these islands are generally in the center, except for a few spectacular sheer slopes on some coastlines. High points of elevation vary from 1,000 to 5,000 feet. The outer islands have a coral limestone base and are relatively flat and less rainy than the inner islands.
Dominica is the largest and most northerly of the Windward islands. It lies between Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south. Its terrain is rugged and mountainous with considerable annual rainfall and extensive rainforest.
St. Lucia is 27 miles long and 14 miles wide. It lies between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and is situated to the south of Martinique and the north of St. Vincent. It is a volcanic and mountainous island whose highest peak is Morne Gimie (3,145ft).
Antigua's 108 square miles (280 sq. km) are mainly coral based and low lying, but the south is particularly fertile, with undulating hills of volcanic origin. The highest point (1,319 feet, 405 m) is at Boggy Peak. The coastline is deeply indented and provides many natural harbors.
