CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT FOR DEAF AND HARD-OF-HEARING STUDENTS
GRADES: 1-4
Just a few tricks I use to keep kids organized and to integrate language and literacy development throughout the day.
  • Have students write down their lunch order (if they have a choice) on laminated posters, using wipe-off markers/crayons. I use one poster with pictures and words to show all lunch choices and mark them with marker as to the feature of the day. The students write their name and lunch choice so that I can record them on our lunch order sheet.
  • Kids keep track of weekly center work using their own manila folders with center checklists inside. On this list appear all the possible centers available that week, space for them to write their name and the date each center assignment was completed, stars to color in to rate the center (1-3, 1 being "yuck" and 3 being "my favorite!"). I then leave a space where I can make comments about student progress, attitude towards work and areas of need. These are sent home weekly to parents, so they are kept abreast of their child's progress.
  • I use a wipe-off board to list daily schedules, including time, short phrases describing what's happening and pictures for my emergent readers. For my ADHD/behavior challenged kids, I refer to the schedule often and have them cross out what we've completed this helps them get through the day with less outbursts and to be able to complete work, knowing that recess will happen shortly!

Children with special needs often require extra help to learn to play with toys. The new books teach constructive play, step by step and are recommended for children 3-8 years old. The books have been field tested for two years with students with autism and multiple disabilities and provide a helpful tool for parents and teachers targeting independent play skills. Clinical Psychologist, author of Asperger's Syndrome . Brisbane, Australia "My son really likes his PlaySteps books. I tried them out as soon as I got home, and he caught on pretty quickly. He was able to memorize the Wall book easily, so by the third time, he wanted to do it without the book. I think the robot is his favorite. He also likes the spinner, but needs some assistance sticking the rods into the spool. All of the therapists have been using the books during his play breaks. Thanks again!" Janet Hopkins

    19. PlaySteps® Autism Teaching Materials, Special Needs Resources
Initially the parent or teacher shows the child how to use the pictures, thengradually reduces the help provided until the child is able to build alone.
    http://www.playsteps.com/the_books.html
What are PlaySteps books? Each book provides clear picture sequences of a simple toy construction. Only one or two blocks at a time are added so the steps are highlighted for the child. Initially the parent or teacher shows the child how to use the pictures, then gradually reduces the help provided until the child is able to build alone. PlaySteps Levels 1,2 and 3 are gradually more complex, increasing the number of pieces and the dexterity needed to complete them. Wall level This PlaySteps book teaches a beginner's level 1 construction. Eleven pieces are needed to build the 5 layer two dimensi onal walls. The blocks are all the same size , and each layer is a different color to make the steps more easily recognizable. The overlapping pieces, in a typical "brick" pattern, allow the child to practice this basic task with large toy parts. Since each layer has one less block than the preceding one, the child learns to pay attention to block placement relative to other pieces. Several pages include short written scripts, to encourage students who are interested in words and letters. Spinner level This PlaySteps book teaches a beginner's level 1 construction. Only seven pieces are needed to complete the three dimensional spinner, and the child learns to make choices between sticks of different sizes to complete the construction correctly. Four "sticks" are symmetrically placed in the "wheel". Building the spinner encourages the child to use both hands and challenges eye-hand coordination. When the last two "sticks" are inserted the child can spin the top easily. Several pages include short written scripts, to encourage students who are interested in words and letters.
