Agency costs of corporate risk management. Author/s: Peter Tufano Issue: Spring, 1998 This over-enthusiastic endorsement of cash-flow hedging may suggest a problem. If projects that managers seek to protect are negative-NPV investments to shareholders, but managers support them nevertheless because of some private benefits they will enjoy, the absence of capital market scrutiny can lead to improper resource allocation and the destruction of shareholder value. While cash-flow hedging takes away the need to obtain "expensive" financing, it does so by eliminating the discipline that the capital markets would impose on firms attempting to fund poor projects. Risk management strategies that allow managers to bypass these external monitors can heighten existing agency conflicts between managers and shareholders.

    Promoting bountiful horticulture
Improving agricultural business management and marketing

Agriculture is changing in areas such as precision agriculture, biotechnology, business structures, environmental stewardship, labor management, agroforestry, and off-farm income. The University's strong research focus in this area allows Extension to help citizens deal with these and other changes. Extension programs include Winning the Game, Master Marketer, and Center for Farm Financial Management programs.
Minnesota's diverse soils, terrain, and climate yield agricultural commodities, forest products, biodiversity, and recreational amenities.

U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE IN SOUTH DAKOTA - WHAT'S IT DOING FOR YOU?
HABITAT PRESERVATION The Service participates in the planning of federally constructed irrigation, power and flood control projects to ensure that measures are taken to benefit and protect fish and wildlife resources. Oil spills, pesticide residues, and other chemical problems are monitored to help prevent recurring problems. Permit applications involving irrigation pumps on the Missouri River reservoirs, as well as plans for pipelines, highways, power lines, sewage lagoons, and erosion control are also reviewed to ensure that fish and wildlife are accommodated. Additionally, Service biologists work with State and local planning groups to help them make provisions for wildlife in their plans.
RESEARCH The Service provides financial support for the Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit located at South Dakota State University in Brookings. Research findings provided through this effort have been used extensively in managing fish and wildlife sources.
FISHERIES CONSERVATION In South Dakota, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service operates Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery and the Spearfish Fisheries Center. The Spearfish Fisheries Center performs other major tasks including the study of fish nutrition and formulation of diets for hatchery fish. Northern pike, walleyes, largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, paddlefish, and trout are raised for stocking of public waters. About 9,500,000 fish are produced and released annually in South Dakota.
