HHS APPROVES EXPANDING PHARMACY BENEFITS
TO SOUTH CAROLINA SENIORS
Program to Provide Prescription Drug for 66,000 South Carolina Residents
HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today approved a South Carolina program to provide Medicaid prescription drug benefits to low-income seniors. State officials estimate that as many as 66,000 South Carolina residents may be aided by the new program. "This new program will mean real progress toward providing prescription drug coverage for those South Carolina seniors most in need," Secretary Thompson said. "While we work with Congress to establish a prescription drug benefit for all Medicare beneficiaries, programs like this one can provide immediate relief for seniors." South Carolina is one of the first states to receive federal funding to extend Medicaid prescription drug coverage to seniors under the Pharmacy Plus initiative. HHS today also announced the approval of a similar program in Maryland and previously approved similar programs in Illinois and Wisconsin. South Carolina's program targets those seniors with incomes up to twice the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). The FPL for 2002 is $8,860 for an individual. Participants would not otherwise be eligible for Medicaid and will receive only the drug benefit.

Bio-Terror Systems Help States Contain SARS, Officials Say

April 11 – Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), the potentially deadly flu-like illness that originated in China, is testing more than public health officials’ nerves. Education Feels States’ Financial Squeeze

March 26 - Education consistently ranks as a top priority for American voters, but that hasn’t spared it from the chopping block as state lawmakers struggle to balance their budgets. Recreation Update . . .
Our parks and recreation department has made great strides in the past few years, increasing both the number of programs offered and facilities available. Prior to the year 2000, our department offered five athletic programs and four non-athletic events annually. In the past 2002 fiscal year we have increased the number of activities offered to 19 athletic programs and 33 non-athletic programs.
Currently, we offer athletic activities for both youth and adults year round. By far our most popular youth and adult sport is soccer, with leagues offered in both the fall and spring. Adults also have the opportunity to partake in slow pitch softball, beach volleyball, and rugby leagues. Youth may contact our department for information concerning basketball in the winter and baseball in the spring. The summer months are typically filled with youth camps. This past summer we offered nine athletic camps: volleyball, softball, tennis, cheerleading, baseball, football, soccer, and two golf camps.

Program Information For over 30 years, the Food Stamp Program has served as the foundation of America's national nutrition safety net, working to end hunger and improve the health of low-income people by helping families buy the food they need for a nutritionally adequate diet. In South Carolina over 100,000 households depend on the Food Stamp Program each month to get the food they need for good health. For children, a better diet means better learning in school. For adults, it means better performance on the job or a better foundation for developing the job skill that can give them and their families independence. For seniors, it means access to a balanced diet vital to their nutritional well-being. For everyone, participation in the Food Stamp Program can help stretch limited budgets, improve nutrition, and reduce the risk of diet-related health problems. Families, people living alone, and people living with roommates use food stamps. People who are homeless can get food stamps, too. People of all ages use food stamps.
