Back Copek Mill - Geography Physical Geography The Geology of Prekmurje The Pannonian part of Slovenia which includes Prekmurje is the most fertile region of Slovenia. Geotectonically it forms a part of the Pannonian basin, which was covered by the Pannonian Sea in geological history. After its withdrawal a large quantity of marine and river sediments remained. A vast network of rivers was formed which later shaped the landscape in a specific way. River channels progressively changed their direction to flow more and more towards the south, running more parallel to each other and elongating the basin at the same time. In the Ice Age the rivers which were bringing deposits from the Alpine glaciers formed a large number of terraces made of thick sediments of mostly silicate pebbles and sand, covered by thick layers of loam. Most of Prekmurje is covered with fertile brown soils. The marshy areas were once extensive, but dams were constructed to control drainage and reduce flood risk. As most of the marshland was converted into fields the intensity of agriculture increased; now most of the area is cultivated. Due to forest clearance for the purpose of increasing the area of cultivation. Prekmurje is the least forested region in Slovenia. Nevertheless the forests preserved on the riverbanks still play a very important role as they form a buffer zone for climatic changes and floods.

Les étendues marécageuses étaient très vastes mais des barrages furent construits pour aider au drainage et réduire les risques d'inondations. Lorsque les champs eurent remplacé la plus grande partie des marais, l'agriculture s'intensifia et la région est aujourd'hui presque toute mise en culture. La déforestation s'est accentuée sous la pression de l'agriculture et Prekmurje est devenue la région la moins boisée de Slovénie. Néanmoins, la forêt sauvegardée sur les berges des rivières joue encore un rôle important face aux changements climatiques et aux inondations. Les terres ayant peu de relief, les rivières ont peu de pente et un débit lent. Cela favorise la formation de marécages obligeant à drainer les terrains. Les rivières les plus larges, comme la Mura sont ponctuées de bras morts, méandres abandonnés à la suite de changements naturels de la direction du courant. Ces bras morts constituent une importante réserve d'eau, refuge idéal de la faune et de la flore.
