    INTRODUCTION
Background: In 1918 the Slovenes joined the Serbs and Croats in forming a new nation, renamed Yugoslavia in 1929. After World War II, Slovenia became a republic of the renewed Yugoslavia, which though communist, distanced itself from Moscow's rule. Dissatisfied with the exercise of power of the majority Serbs, the Slovenes succeeded in establishing their independence in 1991. Historical ties to Western Europe make Slovenia a candidate for future membership in the EU.

    Geography of Slovenia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Slovenia is situated at the meeting of central Europe , the Mediterranean, and the Balkans. The Alps including the Julian Alps , the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and the Karawanken chain, as well as the Pohorje dominate northern Slovenia near Austria . Slovenia's Adriatic coastline extends for approximately 50 kilometers (39 mi.) from Italy to Croatia . The term "karst"a limestone region of underground rivers, gorges, and caves originated in Slovenia's Karst plateau between Ljubljana and the Italian border. On the Pannonian plain to the east and northeast, toward the Croatian and Hungarian borders, the landscape is essentially flat. However, the majority of Slovenian terrain is hilly or mountainous, with around 90% of the surface 200 meters or more above sea level.

EXPEDITION BROCHURE 2003 Slovenia Geography Slovenia is the smallest country in Eastern Europe, about the size of Wales. It is wedged between Austria and Croatia and shares shorter borders with Italy, Hungary and the Adriatic Sea. Forests occupy about half of the total area. Much of the country is mountainous - average height above sea level is 557 metres. The highest mountains are in the northwest (the Julian Alps) reaching 2864m ( c . 9300ft) on Mt Triglav. Four of the major physiographic regions of Europe meet in Slovenia: the Alps, the Dinaric karst, the Pannonian plain and the Mediterranean. The Karst : The Dinaric area of western and southern Slovenia is predominantly a karst landscape. Karst, named after the Kras region between Ljubljana and the Adriatic, is a type of topography formed by subsurface dissolution of limestone and other soluble rocks. It is characterized by caves and caverns, dry valleys, and underground drainage. The terrain is pocked with large numbers of closed depressions known as dolines . Commonly, the depressions are floored with red clay, which today provides the best soils for agriculture. Some of the larger depressions may be several kilometres across - large enough to contain an entire village and surrounding fields.
