HEALTH COMMISSIONER ISSUES ANNUAL
SUMMER RABIES ALERT
With the summer season underway, New York City Health Commissioner Thomas R. Frieden, MD, MPH today advised New Yorkers to avoid wild or stray animals that can carry rabies . Wild animals (e.g., skunks, raccoons and bats) behaving abnormally - such as attempting to interact with or attack pets, stumbling, or acting disoriented - should be reported to the local police precinct or the Center for Animal Care and Control ( CACC ) Animal Rescue at Dr. Frieden said, “While there has not been a human case of rabies in New York City in more than 50 years, New Yorkers should take precautions to ensure that children and pets avoid wild animals such as raccoons, bats and skunks - especially those that may be exhibiting abnormal behavior. Furthermore, New Yorkers should remember to license their pets and have them vaccinated against the rabies virus.” As infected pets can pass rabies along to their owners, all New Yorkers should ensure that their pet's rabies vaccinations are current. Initial vaccinations for dogs and cats are valid for one year, and re-vaccinations are valid for one or three years, depending on the type of vaccine. Additionally, New Yorkers should leash their pets to prevent them from coming into contact with wild animals.

Disease Index NJ InTouch What You Should Know About. . . Rabies How to Protect Yourself from Rabies Have Your Pet Vaccinated Against Rabies. Pets can become infected with rabies through contact with rabid wild animals. Because of this, it is important that your dog or cat have up-to-date rabies vaccinations. Because a current trend in the United States indicates that there has been a higher incidence of rabies in cats than in dogs in recent years, rabies vaccination is especially important for cats. Cats left outdoors to roam have a greater chance of exposure to rabid animals, but even indoor cats should be vaccinated, as occasionally they may get out and/or wild animals, such as bats or raccoons, may get into houses through open doors, windows, or uncapped chimneys. You should get your pet vaccinated at a private veterinarian’s office or at a free state/municipal-sponsored rabies clinic. Do Not Feed or Handle Wild Animals. Especially avoid contact with all bats, raccoons, skunks, groundhogs, and foxes. It is illegal in New Jersey to keep these wild animals as pets. Take measures to prevent raccoons or bats from entering homes, barns, garages, and other buildings. Store all trash or pet food kept outdoors in animal-resistant containers. Avoid Contact With Strays or Pets Other Than Your Own.

Rabies Fact Sheet What is Rabies? Rabies is a viral disease of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) that is almost always fatal. Rabies in humans is very rare in the U.S., but rabies in animals - especially wildlife - is common in some parts of the country. How is Rabies Spread? The rabies virus lives in the saliva (spit), brain, and spinal cord tissue of animals and is spread when they bite or scratch. The virus can also be spread if saliva or nerve tissue touches broken skin or a mucous membrane (in the mouth, nose or eyes). What Kinds of Animals Spread Rabies? The rabies virus can infect any mammal (if it has fur or hair it is a mammal), but infection is most common among certain mammals such as bats, skunks, foxes, and raccoons. Rabies is very rare among rodents (squirrels, rats, mice, and chipmunks). Thanks to vaccines, rabies is extremely rare among pets and farm animals. How Common is Rabies in Maine?

STRIPED SKUNKS occur throughout Missouri, although they are most common in agricultural and forest edge habitats. Their fur is shiny black with varying amounts of white on the head, back and tail. Adults are about two feet long, including the tail. Spotted skunks occur primarily in southern Missouri, but nowhere are they abundant. They are about one-half the size of striped skunks. A characteristic strong, pungent odor results when skunks spray musk from their scent glands. These shy, secretive animals discharge their scent only when disturbed or harassed. Skunks are nocturnal, and while they do not hibernate, they may be inactive for extended periods during winter. They feed on fruits, berries and insects, often digging cone-shaped holes in lawns to remove grubs. Insect-infested turf may be overturned in large patches. Small mammals, ground-nesting birds and eggs are eaten on occasion. Skunks live in underground dens, usually renovated woodchuck burrows, or in rocky crevasses. In rural and suburban areas skunks may take refuge beneath buildings and in the crawl space under porches. In late winter skunks seek mates and breed. After about 2 months gestation the young are born in the dens, and by summer they join the mother in foraging for food.

Rabies sometimes remains in a latent form in skunks only to become reactivated later. In the wild, the average lifespan of a Striped Skunk is about 3 years.
http://museum.nhm.uga.edu/gawildlife/mammals/Carnivora/Mustelidae/mmephitis.html
Striped Skunk, Mephitis mephitis Scientific name: The genus and species names are the Latin word mephitis (bad odor), referring to the offensive smell of the anal gland secretions which the Striped Skunk uses as a defensive mechanism. Phylum: Chordata
Subphylum: Vertebrata
Class: Mammalia
Order: carnivora
Family: Mustelidae Size: The Striped Skunk is about the size of a domestic house cat, measuring 53.3 - 71.1 cm (21 - 28 in) in total length and weighing from 1.4 - 5 kg (3 - 11 lbs).
Color: The Striped Skunk is covered in long black fur, except for a white stripe from the tip of the nose to the forehead, and a white patch on top of the head that extends to the shoulders, then divides into two stripes down the length of the back. The tail is black, tipped with white hairs.
Other things to look for: The Striped Skunk is most well known for its chemical warfare in defense against predators. The strong-smelling musk is produced in two glands on either side of the anus. The musk is sprayed by voluntary contraction of muscles. This musk can be expelled as either a fine mist or as droplets for distances up to 3.7 m (12 ft). Musk glands contain enough musk for 5 - 6 sprays and refill within a week. Exposure to the musk may cause nausea, swelling of the nose lining, and eye irritation. Breeding takes place from February to April. A litter of 4-11 young are born in a burrow after a gestation averaging 63 days. The young skunks, called "kittens," begin to eat solid food at 6 - 7 weeks of age and leave the den with the female on nightly foraging trips when they are weaned at 8 weeks of age. Kittens leave the care of the female at 12 - 14 weeks of age and disperse to live on their own.

Skunks are members of the weasel family (Mustelidae). There are four different species in the skunk family; striped, hooded, spotted and scarce hognosed. Their markings may vary but all are black and white with a bushy tail. Appearance
The most common skunk is the striped skunk. They typically weigh 6 to 10 pounds and measure 20 to 30 inches long, similar to the size of a cat. They have two unmistakable white stripes running down their back. All skunks have small heads and eyes with a pointed snout and short legs. Their short legs tend to give them a slow, waddling movement when they walk. They are a nocturnal animal. Habits
Skunks are active all year. However, they do stay in their den in the cold season of the year. The skunk is most known for its potent defense system. The chemical that skunks spray is a sulfur compound called N-bulymercaptan. It is dispensed in a fan like pattern from two openings near the animal's rectum. Spraying is not the skunks first line of defense. Skunks will first fluff its fur, stamp its feet, growl, spit, stand on its front legs to scare you away. When this fails, they spray. Geography
The striped skunk can be found throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Their territory may take up 30 to 40 acres of land. Skunks will travel up to 10 miles when foraging for food at night. They tend to live in shallow dens or burrows which they can dig themselves or borrow from other species. Skunks cause problems because of their ability to adapt to urbanization by denning beneath buildings, under decks, in trash dumps and woodpiles. They prefer warm, dark, dry and defensible areas.

Pets That Don't Stink: Skunks
by Arden Moore
Do you like the loyalty and obedience of a dog? But appreciate the tidiness of a litter-box trained cat? If you're torn between choosing a dog or a cat, why not get the best qualities of both by adopting a skunk? Before you go "phee-uuuww" and hold your nose, let's clear the air a bit about the domesticated skunk. Pet skunks, raised by professional breeders, are de-scented by age 3 weeks weeks before they join your household. Once that stinky scent sac is removed, skunks actually smell sweet and don't even have a doggie odor, which is common when canines come inside after a romp in the rain. As for using the litter box, skunk deposits, due to their natural diets, are much less pungent than feline deposits. Still, what's the benefit of having a pet skunk? Just ask Jamie Kinser, of Orlando, FL. She shares her home with what she affectionately calls her "six-pack" half-dozen pet skunks answering to the roll call of Oreo, Halston, Gucci, Angel, Nikki, and Dracula.

91. Living With Urban Wildlife: The Skunk
Abundant food and shelter and the absence of natural predators haveallowed many wild animals to successfully adapt to urban life.
http://www.cfhs.ca/Programs/HumaneEducation/GeneralPublic/UrbanWildlife/skunk_p1
Introduction The existence of wildlife in urban areas enriches our environment, bringing a little bit of nature to the bustle of the city. Abundant food and shelter and the absence of natural predators have allowed many wild animals to successfully adapt to urban life. We can hardly blame them for helping themselves to food that is readily accessible in garbage pails, gardens, composters and sheds. If there is ample food and a place to live, removing the resident animal will just create a vacant territory for another one to move into. Preventive measures have proven to be less costly and less stressful for both wildlife and the homeowner in the long term. Although human-wildlife conflicts can occur, a little understanding of the animals' characteristics and needs will help us take a humane approach leading to a peaceful coexistence. Humane treatment of an animal involves compassion and respect, precludes cruelty and avoids pain, suffering or injury. Wild animals should be treated with respect and understanding. Never corner or attempt to pick up any wild animal. They may bite when they feel threatened and they may have parasites or diseases that could be passed on to you or your pets. With a little understanding and patience, you will soon be enjoying the wild animals in your backyard! Introduction

For now I've named them Pepe and Peter. They're just babies right now, and we've been seeing them during the day as early as 9 a.m. and as late as 7 p.m. Needless to say, we keep our eyes wide open when we're outside now. Although Doug (my husband) and I were somewhat upset when we first noticed the skunks (he walked between them on the sidewalk to the front door, and I just about ran into one on the doorstep after getting the mail), we've done some homework and have learned a lot: Skunks can carry rabies, but so can raccoons, oppossums, bats, dogs, cats, etc. No, they're not born with it. Skunks get rabies by contact with a rabid animal, just like everyone else. As with any wild animal, enjoy them from a distance!

Turkeys Florida is home to the Florida wild turkey Meleagris gallopavo osceola ) and the eastern wild turkey ( Meleagris gallopavo silvestris ). The Florida wild turkey is found only in peninsular Florida (figure one). North of the peninsula it intergrades with the eastern subspecies. The Florida wild turkey is best distinguished from the eastern subspecies, which it closely resembles, by its darker wing feathers. The white bars on the primary wing feathers are narrower than the black bars and are irregular or broken.
Wild turkey hens in Florida typically begin laying in late March or early April. Clutches average 10.3 eggs and take approximately 12-13 days to lay. Eggs hatch after 25-26 days of continuous incubation. Poults will roost on the ground for the first 14 days after hatching. During this period, approximately 70 percent mortality occurs, primarily through predation. Only 45-50 percent of wild turkey nests successfully hatch. Most are lost to predators, although occasionally nests are lost by other means (agricultural activities, flooding, etc.). However, hens often renest if their initial nest is destroyed.
