Those Frustrating Furry Foragers
May 1998 I’ve been watching for the woodchuck. It’s time for them to come out of hibernation and recover from the winter's fast by eating the young tender greens in meadows, fields and yards. This season, I am prepared. That is, I am prepared in my attitude. Some species of wildlife we consider pests because they seem to counter our efforts to grow things or make our property more attractive. Our yards provide perfect habitat for species that use clearings or the edges between meadow, or yard, and forest. Deer, raccoons, skunks, fox and woodchucks all thrive in these habitats. We make it more inviting when we plant herbs, grasses, vegetables, flowering plants, bulbs, tender shrubs and trees. Snakes are attracted to the moist soil under mulch in our gardens and the sunning places at the foundations of our houses. Skunks look for the grubs in soil and often search in newly dug gardens. Also, our yards tend to attract species that can tolerate human presence to a fair degree. There are two basic choices for dealing with these conflicts.

Rabies in humans is very rare in the United States, but rabies in animals, especially wildlife, is common in some parts of the country. How is Rabies Spread? The virus can also be spread if saliva or nerve tissue touches broken skin or a mucous membrane in the mouth, nose, or eye. What Kinds of Animals Spread Rabies? The rabies virus can infect any mammal (if it has fur or hair, it’s a mammal), but infection is most common among bats, skunks, fox, and raccoons. Rabies is very rare among rodents (squirrels, rats, mice, and chipmunks). Thanks to vaccines, rabies is extremely rare among pets and farm animals. traps. www.urbanwildliferescue.org/evict/skunks INTRODUCTION The existence of wildlife in urban areas enriches our environment, bringing a little bit of nature to the bustle of the city. Abundant food and shelter and the absence of natural predators have allowed many wild animals to successfully adapt to urban life. We can hardly blame them for helping themselves to food that is readily accessible in garbage pails, gardens, composters and sheds. If there is ample food and a place to live, removing the resident animal will just create a vacant territory for another one to move into. Preventive measures have proven to be less costly and less stressful for both wildlife and the homeowner in the long term. Although live trapping and relocation has been widely used as a method of wildlife control, it is not a long-term solution. Most wild animals are territorial, so relocating them somewhere else not only fails to solve local problems, but often creates new problems at the release site by upsetting the natural balance of existing populations.

However, these animals have some beneficial habits; they kill insects and rodents. The striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) is the most common species in California, although the smaller spotted skunk (Spilogale putorius) can be a local problem around dwellings. The striped skunk is a house-cat sized animal (4 -10 Ibs.) that has long black fur with two variable broad white stripes down the back. The head is triangular; the tail large and bushy. The strong musk characteristic of skunks is expelled from two scent glands near the anus.
Biology
Damage
Skunks become a problem when their activities conflict with human interests. When skunks take shelter under homes, decks, or in garages, their presence is not usually tolerated by occupants of the building. All skunks have the ability to discharge a nauseating musk from their anal glands. They are capable of spraying their musk several times with accuracy to about 10 feet. Confrontation with pets often results in the pet being sprayed or bitten.

BOBCAT
Many people are unaware that the wild bobcat is native to Ohio. Not only is it native but it presently exists, though in very small numbers, in mostly southern regions of this state. It is quite sad to have one of our own native species, so endangered, that it has never even been seen by most. Another of our endangered species, the bobcat has succumbed to the same fate caused by deforestation as many of our other wild inhabitants, be it bird, reptile, amphibian, mammal, insect and even plant. Bobcats require large, unbroken tracts of forest encompassing hundreds of acres, for hunting and breeding territories. It's the same old story, but a real one - those forests are gone. Our bobcat was released into the wild by her former owners, with all four of her feet declawed! And she was released in a part of Ohio where no bobcats live. She had discovered some domestic geese on a farm and was able to capture and kill a few, before being discovered by the farmer. A concerned rehabber convinced him to let them live trap her and she now will live the rest of her life out at "BACK TO THE WILD". In captivity, she could live 30 years! She is doing very well here on a diet of raw turkey, chicken, some beef, rodents and rabbits or squirrels that have died from their injuries. She would not do well on commercial cat food and in fact refuses to eat it. She is quite small for a wild cat, weighing only 22 lbs., which is average for her species. Her cage requirements are a lot of room, staggered shelves at different heights, hollow logs and open areas to bask in as well as cool, shaded areas. We have planted lots of tall grasses and bamboo in her pen and she enjoys jumping and hiding in them. Visitors sometimes can hear her purring loudly, as she checks them out through the wire - but if they could only see her at feeding time - she is a wild animal and always will be!

Wildlife: Wild Turkey
Predators to the Wild Turkey Population densities of many of the more adaptable predators of wild turkeys, including coyotes, hawks, owls, raccoons, crows, skunks, snakes, and rodents, may be as high or higher today than previously in both historic and expanded turkey range. Additionally, increased urbanization has resulted in more feral cats and dogs. Predation is an important component of a turkey's life cycle. Larger predators such as the bobcat, coyote, fox, and eagle kill adult hens and even gobblers; however, losses of adult turkeys generally do not significantly affect turkey population dynamics. In contrast, smaller predators, including skunks, raccoons, opossums, and snakes, are the primary nest and poult predators. These may significantly impact turkey populations, but it is questionable whether this impact is significant. Predation of the wild turkey is a complex process, and it will require more complex (and extensive) research designs to examine the process of predation. Innumerable studies have indicated that it plays an important role in wild turkey dynamics. However, an equal number have demonstrated the reverse.

Do pet skunks make scents?
Suman Bandrapalli (bandrapallis@csps.com)
Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor There are two types of people: those who set a trend, and those who smell one. Alma Bott is both. Like an estimated 250,000 people across America, Alma is raising a skunk while trying not to raise a stink. "Skunks are unique companions and they also have a shock value," says the teenager. "When my neighbor saw Jasper for the first time, she said, 'Love may be blind, but there are other senses to consider.' " Alma says she did extensive research before welcoming a skunk into her house. It wasn't the odor that worried her: Breeding farms de-scent skunks by removing the two spray glands. What Alma had to weigh was the profile of the pet. HOW SWEET: Jay Tablas holds Shadow at the 11th National Skunk Show, held last year in Augusta, Ga.

Adult skunks are about two feet long, including a 7- to 10-inch tail. They weigh 3-12 pounds, depending on age, sex, physical condition and time of year. Males on average are 15 percent larger and heavier than females.
A skunk's pelt is composed of soft, wavy underfur overlain with long, coarse guard hairs. Skunks molt yearly, beginning in April and ending some time in September. By nature, skunks are placid and sluggish. They move at a deliberate walk, slow trot or clumsy gallop; their top speed is about 10 miles per hour. They can swim, but are poor climbers. Their senses of sight, smell and hearing have been judged poor to fair compared with those of other wild mammals; their sense of touch, however, is acute. Photo courtesy of

Musk is an oily liquid, creamy or yellowish in color. Its active ingredient is a sulphide called mercaptan. Field guides refer to the musk as "highly repellent to all mammals". In short, it stinks. Musk can make a predator sick or, if the skunk has been able to direct the substance into the animal's eyes, temporarily blind. Skunks do not hibernate, although they may remain dormant underground all winter. Their body temperature remains near normal. Several skunks may share the same winter den. Females usually lose 10-30 percent of their body weight by spring; males lose only about 10 percent, as they are more inclined to leave their dens and feed during mild spells, mostly at night but occasionally during the day.

Wild skunks are an important part of our ecosystem. They could be called "Nature's Sanitation Engineers". They rid the environment of rats, mice, cockroaches, harmful garden pests (snails, grubs, all insects, gophers, moles), even poisonous animals (rattlesnakes, black widow spiders, scorpions), and "road kill" (which can cause accidents and spread disease).
Striped skunks are rarely known to eat crops and raid poultry pens. They can also cause some damage when building their burrows. Striped skunks have few natural enemies. Owl, hawks, coyotes, bobcats, foxes, and dogs may occasionally take one, but most predators are repulsed by the odor of their musk. Striped skunks are highly susceptible to being struck by vehicles, and road-killed animals are commonly seen along highways throughout Texas. Individuals seldom live more than two years in the wild. Trapping
The skunk is one of the easiest of furbearers to catch, falling prey to dirt-hole, bait-stake and burrow sets. The skunk, with its relatively low-value fur, is more often taken by trappers in pursuit of more valuable furs such as fox or raccoon.

Striped skunk Mephitis mephitis (Schreber) Description : The striped skunk is probably the best known and most frequently encountered member of its family in Kansas. It can be distinguished by: 1) rather heavy body, 2) short legs, the hind limbs appearing longer than the forelimbs, 3) front toes equipped with long, recurved claws while the rear toes have short, straight claws, 4) long, glossy black fur which covers the entire animal except for a white stripe from the tip of the nose to the forehead, and a white patch on back of the head which extends to the shoulders as a single stripe and then divides into two lines of variable length, and 5) a long, bushy, black tail usually tipped by white hairs. Size : Adults may attain the following dimensions: total length 560-795 mm; tail 190-295 mm; hind foot 54-89 mm; ear 25-35 mm; weight 1.8 to 4.1 kilograms. Males are larger than females. Range and Habitat : The striped skunk ranges throughout Kansas. It tolerates an array of habitats, but is most common in mixed woodland and grassland habitats such as forest edges, fence rows, wooded ravines and rocky outcrops. Populations tend to be low in arid regions and in large tracts of mature forest or moist vegetation where the water table is within 0.6 to 0.9 meters of the surface. There are three subspecies in Kansas

Skunk facts
  • Skunks have adapted well to city life. While skunk families can be fun to watch, they can also cause problems for property owners and residents. Skunks are burrowing animals found in almost all parts of Ontario. Skunks are omnivorous; they feed on grubs, insects, small rodents, carrion, fruits and vegetables. Skunks are active all year but may be dormant during periods of extended cold. They are attracted to spaces under porches, sheds, piles of wood, rocks or debris and garbage, pet food and open composts. Removing a skunk without also removing the food source and eliminating any potential shelter just creates an opportunity for another skunk to move in.
Problems and solutions Lawn and garden Skunks are usually attracted to lawns and gardens, especially after a rainfall when grubs and larvae are near the surface. Skunks dig small round holes, and in some cases actually roll up large chunks of sod. The grubs feed on the grass root system, destroying the grass. Prevention methods include:

Wildlife Rehabilitators and Other Animal Resources If you find a wildlife animal which appears to be sick, injured or truly orphaned - and you want to help - getting the animal to a wildlife rehabilitator is its best change for survival. Here are some basic facts you should know: Only a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or rehabilitation facility should handle, treat a wildlife animal. Wildlife animals are not pets. It is best for both you, and for the animal, to leave the animal in the wild and respect and appreciate it in its natural habitat. It is unlawful to keep native wild animals without a license. Be aware that wild animals can carry diseases that can be harmful to humans. Orphaned animals are best cared for by their natural parents. The most helpful step you can take is to ensure that the animal is located where its parent will find it. In most cases, baby animals that you find are not abandoned or orphaned. Leave them where they are, and their parents will most likely find them. Call one of the rehabilitators or services listed below to see if they are able to take the animal. A good web site is

People don't realize that the skunk is a very docile, benign animal. However, their severe near-sightedness often gets them in trouble. Their odor is famous and strikes fear in everyone who encounters them. A skunk's only defense is a noxious odor created by a sulfuric acid "fired" from the anal glands. But skunks have a limited supply of ammunition and they can't "re-load" very quickly, so they don't waste their defensive spray. Instead, they stamp their front feet as a warning if another creature gets too close, giving ample opportunity for the "threat" to back off. Skunks have a hearty appetite for grubs, frogs, insects, mice and baby rats. People soon find that their rodent problems disappear after skunks take up residence.
