SKUNKS (Mephitis mephitis) Co-Existing With Skunks If you mention the word "skunk" to someone, the word "stinky" can't be far behind. However, most people know little else about skunks other than the fact that they can spray when threatened. There are two types of skunks in our area: the striped skunk and the spotted skunk. The striped skunk is more commonly seen than the spotted skunk and is about the size of the average house cat, with the spotted skunk being about half the size. One is black with white stripes and one is black with white spots; both have bushy tails and are strictly nocturnal. Skunks will choose dark, quiet places to sleep in the daytime and forage for food at night. Being scavengers, their diet includes fruit, berries, eggs, rodents, scorpions, black widow spiders, dog and cat food and grubs. They are beneficial to a neighborhood due to the number of destructive insects and rodents they consume. An area inhabited by skunks will not have and abundance of mice, rats, spiders or scorpions. Skunk release Skunk spray is oil based. The odor will cling and linger. Inanimate objects that have been sprayed can be washed with a bleach water solution. For pets and people, vinegar and water baths will help, as will several enzymatic odor control products available at pet supply stores or though veterinarians. Time and fresh air also will eventually cause the odor to completely dissipate. The key is not to anger the skunk so much that he feels he must spray. If you encounter a skunk, back off. Warning behaviors will be exhibited by the skunk prior to spraying. In the striped skunk, you will observe foot-stomping and backing up, followed by a quick reversal, a raised tail and a spray. Skunks By The Woods Hick (reprinted with Author's permission) It all started when my friend caught three young skunks. I knew an old woodsman who descented them (I could write a book about him). So, I drove out to his place and held the young skunks while he descented them. In the process, I learned how to do it myself. She was very friendly and a nice pet, but her feces did have a strong odor and she kept me up all night with her scampering around. So, I moved her out to an old chicken house. The next spring I put a wild male skunk on with her to breed, but he dug an escape tunnel and they eloped. I never did see her again. Skunks are night prowlers. They eat bugs, mice, and other small animals, fruit and berries among other things. They are about two feet long including their tail and their color is mostly black with a bit of white on their heads and usually two white stripes down the back. The amount of white varies greatly with a scarcity of them in some years and seeming over-abundance in others. In the late winter the males start searching for females to mate with. Here in northern Pennsylvania, it’s usually about the middle of February. Back when my friend had his descented female skunk, I would wait for a winter thaw in February and go looking for skunk tracks in the snow. Locating skunk signs in an area, I’d set a box trap to catch a male skunk. Once caught, it would be moved very carefully to the pen with the descented female and released in the pen with her. A few weeks later I’d remove the "live" male, again very carefully, and let him go.

Wild life Rehabs WildLife Information If you have problems with healthy wildlife living in your yard you can humanely evict them simply by using ammonia soaked rags or moth bricks in the area of which they are coming and going from!! The best method is to poke holes in the perimeter of a coffee can, then soak a rag in ammonia and lid the top so that the smell will emit from the can even on rainy days. These are not harmful or toxic to the critters, they just really do not like the odor caused by them, the smell is similiar to wildlife urine causing them to move along! Please allow several days for this method to work, especially a mother with her young!! After all she needs to carry all these "kids" to a new home. Be patient, you may even get the wonderful opportunity to see her leaving with them to her new site, course evicting her was a shame to begin with if she was not bothering any one and appeared to be healthy! If you insist on having these critters removed from your yard, and the above methods do not work, (although this is what I do to keep critters out of my garden all summer long, effectively!!) you need to contact a local pest control licensed to handle & trap wildlife. Each double page spread in this beautiful book includes a black and white drawing of a wild creature and on the opposing page a richly coloured meticulously detailed painting depicting the wild babies in their habitat. A single line of poetic text accompanies each of the twelve sets of illustrations. For each wild family, the author selects a different verb to describe its movements: raccoons steal, a moose calf explores, goslings snuggle, skunks snuffle, mountain goats clamber, foxes dash, a loon chick sails and cougar cubs tumble and pounce. Young children will be delighted with the opportunity to discover secrets hiding in each painting. They must look very closely to find hidden animals or clues to the animal which is featured on the next page. Those children who are beginning to be literate will enjoy hunting for words the artist has cleverly camouflaged in the foliage surrounding the wild creatures. A good light and a child's skills of observation are necessary but may not be sufficient to succeed at this challenge. Fortunately for adults sharing this book with little ones, the author has included a legend at the end of the book, specifying exactly what to look for and where each item is hidden.
