by Alfred Lansing In the summer of 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton set off aboard the Endurance bound for the South Atlantic. The goal of his expedition was to cross the Antarctic overland, but more than a year later, and still half a continent away from the intended base, the Endurance was trapped in ice and eventually was crushed. For five months Shackleton and his crew survived on drifting ice packs in one of the most savage regions of the world before they were finally able to set sail again in one of the ship's lifeboats. Alfred Lansing's Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage is a white-knuckle account of this astounding odyssey. Oztrack Ice Skating Bookshop

USFSA HISTORY
Just before the Civil War, a skating craze, accompanied by a dancing craze, swept America, and during this time, Haines leapt into the limelight with his daring combination of both skating and dance. He was a true revolutionary, for in a country where figure skating had laboriously developed a stiff and rigid style, the free and expressive movements of his virtuoso performances were frowned on, if not actually condemned. Haines claimed to be the champion of America in 1863; however, at that time many self-proclaimed "championships" were held without any legitimate or official claim to the title, so Haines' title cannot be substantiated. At any rate, the continued cool reception given to him in his own country prompted him to go to Europe, where he was warmly and enthusiastically received. When he arrived in Vienna, he received the warmest reception of all; he was an immediate success. Little wonder, in the home of the graceful Viennese Waltz! It was here, as a direct result of his pioneering performances, that the so-called "International Style of Figure Skating" was born. It wasn't until many years later – in the first decade of this century – that this style finally came home to America. Although local skating clubs had been formed and competitions held since the middle of the 19th century, the sport functioned informally, and some years were to pass before the formation of the United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA) in 1921. Only then was the machinery established that has guaranteed the growth in this country of the modern, highly-developed sport of figure skating. The USFSA is comprised of member clubs, individual members and associate members.

By John Gettings RELATED LINKS 2002 Winter Olympics 2002 Figure Skating Medal Standings Figure Skating Through the Years Encyclopedia: Figure Skating Once a vital means of transportation throughout northern Europe, ice skating evolved into a sport during the 18th century. The man credited with giving birth to the type of figure skating we see today is Jackson Haines, an American from New York. In the early 1860s, Haines's new combination of music, ballet, ice skating, and dancing wasn't well received in this country. So he took his revolutionary ideas to Vienna, Austria, where they flourished. Figure skating debuted at the 1908 Olympic Summer Games in London. The singles and pairs competition has been a part of every Winter Games since 1924. The ice dancing competition was introduced in 1976.

Biographies Naomi Thanks to Naomi's Mom, Leslie Dixon, for all her help with our webpage! Born: December 18, 1978 - Arcata, CA
Height: 5'6"
Home Club:
Hometown: Allegan, MI
Training Town: Newington, CT
Coach: Tatiana Tarasova
Choreographer: Nikolai Morozov
Naomi began ballet training when she was 3 years old and debuted as a ballerina at age 6 in "The Nutcracker." She began figure skating at age 8 and continued performing in "The Nutcracker" every year until the age of 15 when she found an ice dancing partner. Before devoting her attention to ice dancing, Naomi expanded her dance talents with a ballet/modern dance scholarship to the Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, Michigan in 1990. She also performed with the Grand Rapids (Mich.) Ballet Company.
Naomi graduated from Lake Placid (NY) High School in 1997 after moving there for one year and beginning her ice dance partnership with Peter. At that time they were training with Natalia Dubova, but Naomi missed training with her former coaches, Igor Shpilband and Liz Coates, in Detroit and they decided to return to the Detroit Skating Club. Naomi had begun training with Igor when she was 12 and she and her mother lived in Allegan, Michigan, which was a 3-hour drive from Detroit. Naomi's Mom made this long drive every weekend so that Naomi could continue training with Igor.
Naomi moved to Hackensack, New Jersey, in the summer of 2000 to begin training with Alexander Zhulin at the Ice House. After spending 2 seasons there, she and Peter began working with Tatiana Tarasova in Newington, CT in the summer of 2002.

Classical Music
Meditation from Thaïs Jules Massenet

'Meditation'. Arrangement for violin and orchestra of short extract from the opera 'Thaïs'. Length 5 minutes. An inevitable item in violin compilation CDs and frequent accompaniment to weddings, figure skaters and ballet dancers.
The complete opera 'Thaïs' is rarely, if ever, available on CD. But this extract, arranged for violin and orchestra by the Belgian musician MP Marsick, is a palm-court favourite: it's easy to visualise a high-class hotel somewhere in Europe at the beginning of the century, perhaps with Poirot walking steadily up to the diners to reveal the identity of the killer...
In fact the opera 'Thaïs' is about the conversion of a fourth-century Egyptian courtesan of that name to Christianity by a monk called Athanael, who falls in love with her - in vain, as it turns out, because Thaïs becomes a nun.

The free program will take place today. Photos of the short are available on Yahoo but only features Stanick and Brian: http://fr.sports.yahoo.com/030124/202/2z4ty.html http://fr.sports.yahoo.com/030124/85/2z5gb.html 24th january Anne-Sophie Calvez finished 10th of the free program and 11th overall. She landed 3tl/3tl (stepped out the second jump), 3lutz/2tl, 3loop, 2a, 3lutz. She fell on the 3f and 2s. It was definitely a great performance from Anne-Sophie after a poor skate at the nationals. The program was well skated even if she lacked energy at the end. Some screen captures will be available tomorrow, along with the free dance screen captures. Yahoo has a photo of Anne-Sophie skating her free skate: 23rd january Sarah Abitbol & Stéphane Bernadis won the silver medal at the Europeans championships. But they made several mistakes in the program and won with the artistical marks. Indeed, Sarah did a double toe loop, single axel and put her hand down on the thrown triple loop. The thrown triple salchow was beautiful and it's nice to see that they have finally decided to stop doing "only" a thrown double axel where their rivals did a salchow. They have been interviewed by french tv after their program and they said that this medal was the "courage medal". Screen captures of their short and free programs have been uploaded

It's a good result for her, considering that she didn't make it to the short program last year. She's still young and needs to gain more experience on the international circuit. 28th march The men's free program took place yesterday. Brian Joubert finished 6th, Stanick Jeannette 16th. It's a disappointing place for Stanick after his bronze medal at the Euros in january. As for Brian, he brillantly managed to come back after a bad skate at the qualifying round. You are here: Home Skating Reports Art on Ice 2002 Art on Ice 2002 in Lausanne Also check out the "Photos" section for photos of Art on Ice. When we entered the rink, we were sure that the show wouldn't be sold out, because for an European show it was a very big rink, but to our surprise it actually turned out to be sold out. Since the show was with live music, there was a stage on the ice (luckily on the opposite end of the rink from where we were sitting, our seats, even though they were only the 3rd category, turned out to be pretty much perfect, 2nd row in the corner), so the ice surface was a lot smaller than usually. The live musicians at the show were the Swiss rock band "Gotthard", a violinist called "Edvin Marton" and a female Swiss singer called "Eve Kay". I wasn't familiar with any of them, but luckily they turned out to be quite pleasant performers. The opening was to live music by “gotthard”, they performed a song called “Let it rain”. First Debbie Park came out and did some of her usual stuff, then she was joined by a group of female skaters called the “Art on Ice Dancers”, who did a number with a couple of jumps and spins. The opening was a bit boring, but not too bad, I would have prefered to see all the skaters though. Then the French presenter came out and did an introduction, which finally proved that my 3 years of learning French at school was a complete waste of time, because I couldn’t understand anything at all, sigh.
