http://www.usmm.org/msts/special.html
Special Missions of Military Sea Transportation Service and Military Sealift Command By Salvatore R. Mercogliano High in orbit, two of America's leading astronauts were gripped in a life-or-death struggle. A stuck thruster valve hurled their spacecraft into an unexpected tumble and they needed to make contact with NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) flight control. If their spiral continued, they faced the possibility of blacking out due to the G-forces and plummeting to their deaths in an uncontrolled re-entry through the atmosphere. In the Philippine Sea, the range instrumentation ship USNS Coastal Sentry served as an at-sea surrogate for NASA flight control. On board, in addition to its crew of merchant mariners, NASA and Air Force technicians tracked the craft in its voyage. Manning the capsule command (Capcom) seat, James R. Fucci made contact with the spacecraft. The astronauts reported serious problems and they could not control the ship. Fucci maintained communications with the astronauts while they shut down their thruster controls and switched to the reentry control system, thereby regaining command of their ship. With their reentry system activated, the Capcom relayed immediate instructions to make an emergency splashdown. The USNS Coastal Sentry, along with the USNS Rose Knot demonstrated the flexibility of mobile seaborne communication systems to NASA and the two astronauts.

USS Badoeng Strait (CVE-116, later AKV-16), 1945-1972
USS Badoeng Strait , a 10,300-ton Commencement Bay class escort aircraft carrier, was built at Tacoma, Washington. Commissioned in November 1945, she served in the Pacific over the next dozen years, except for eight months out of commission from April 1946 to January 1947. Mainly occupied during the later '40s with anti-submarine warfare (ASW) functions, Badoeng Strait 's mission changed with the start of the Korean War in late June 1950. Early in the following month, she embarked Marine Corps aircraft for transportation to the war zone. She operated some of these Marine planes for combat operations through a tour that lasted until January 1951, including participation in the September 1950 Inchon Landing and the Hungnam Evacuation in December.

    http://www.thesea.ecsd.net/transportation1.htm
    Teacher Background Information
    Historical Data:
People have long used the seas as a means of transportation, as it is often easier to move people and goods over water than land. Following is a list of ship development milestones: The earliest craft were log dugouts, rafts, and boats made of hides stretched over a wooden frame. About 6,000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians built reed boats powered by paddlers. About 5,200 years ago, they invented sails. Another breakthrough in sailing technology occurred in 3000 BC when the Egyptians learned to build vessels from wood planks. Around 500 BC the Greeks built ships with two masts. Shipbuilders in northern Europe devised the stern rudder in AD 1303. In the 1450's, shipbuilders in the Mediterranean developed the full-rigged sailing ship. The first workable submarine was constructed from a wooden rowboat covered with waterproof hides in 1620. The first commercial successful steamboat was built in 1807. In 1818, the first all-iron sailing ship was built. A propeller-driven steamship design was patented in 1836.

Parade of ships brings Seattle-area sailors to Seafair 2002 Thursday, August 1, 2002 By DAVID EGGERT
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER The last time David Melin sailed the waters of Puget Sound, it was 1980, and he was a Sea Scout putting in a 52-foot boat at Fishermen's Terminal every Monday night. PHOTO GALLERY
See more images of the fleet's arrival
Yesterday, as he led the USS Stethem in Seafair's Navy parade of ships, Commander Melin at last returned on the sea. "I've been trying to get a ship back here for 18 years," he told about 400 visitors who traveled on the guided-missile destroyer from Everett to Seattle. "I'm just thrilled to be here today." Melin, a Franklin High School graduate who grew up in Mount Baker, had to catch his emotions a few times while speaking to the crowd which included 150 family members and friends. The Stethem, three other surface ships and a submarine participated in the parade, which allowed members of the public to ask questions and learn about the fleet while enjoying a smooth day cruise.
