Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Sexually transmitted (venereal) diseases are infections that are often, if not always, passed from person to person through sexual contact.
Diseases That May Be Sexually Transmitted
Earliest recognized sexually transmitted diseases
  • Chancroid Gonorrhea Granuloma inguinale Lymphogranuloma venereum Syphilis
More recently recognized sexually transmitted diseases
  • Chlamydial cervicitis Crabs (lice, pediculosis pubis) Genital candidiasis (usually not sexually transmitted) Genital herpes Genital warts HIV infection and AIDS Molluscum contagiosum Nongonococcal urethritis (often a chlamydial or mycoplasmal infection) Scabies Trichomoniasis
Diseases sometimes transmitted sexually
  • Amebiasis Campylobacteriosis Cytomegalovirus infection Giardiasis Hepatitis A and B Salmonellosis Shigellosis
Because sexual activity provides an easy opportunity for organisms to find new hosts, a wide variety of infectious microorganisms can be spread by sexual contact. These range from microscopic viruses (for example, the human immunodeficiency virus) to visible insects (for example, the crab or pubic louse). Transmission of some sexually transmitted diseases does not require genital penetration. Although sexually transmitted diseases usually result from having vaginal, oral, or anal sex with an infected partner, occasionally they may be transmitted by kissing or by close body contact. Agents of some sexually transmitted diseases may be transmitted through food and water or blood transfusions, contaminated medical instruments, or needles used by injecting drug users.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
Some 56 million Americans have an STD other than AIDS and many more are infected each year. The causative bacterial viral, or parasitic agents are spread primarily by sexual contact, but may also be spread by the use of infected needles. Some STDs are chronic infections, but many can be cured. Quick diagnosis and treatment are often the keys to cure. The only 100% prevention is abstinence. Maintaining faithful monogamous relations with one's spouse is effective, provided both partners are free of STDs. Safe sex (use of a condom ) with a monogamous partner is the next best protection against STDs. Always remember that prevention is better than therapy. Bacterial:
Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea ("clap"), a common disease worldwide, is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae . There are over 650,000 new cases in the U.S. each year. 82% of cases of gonorrhea occur in teenagers and young adults, and females are twice as likely to become infected after one act of intercourse with an infected male as males are after one act of intercourse with an infected female. Gonorrheal infections may be asymptomatic in both sexes.

What are sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)? Why do women need to be concerned about them?
STDs, once called venereal diseases , are among the most common diseases in the United States. STDs are diseases that you get by having sexual contact (vaginal, oral, or anal) with someone who already has an STD. Caused by a number of bacteria and viruses , more than 20 STDs affect both women and men. While some STDs can be cured, other STDs are life long (can't be cured). STDs can affect a person's physical health, emotional health, and quality of life. While rare, STDs can cause life-threatening conditions, particularly when they are not treated. Experts believe that having an STD can increase a person's chances for getting infected with HIV , the virus that causes AIDS.

Fact Sheet N° 186 December 1997 YOUNG PEOPLE AND SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES FACTS ABOUT YOUNG PEOPLE
      • There are more than 1.5 billion young people (between the ages of 10 and 24) in the world today; 85% of them live in developing countries. Between 1970 and 2025, the urban adolescent (between the ages of 10 and 19) population in developing countries will grow by 600%. In the least developed countries, only 13% of the girls and 22% of the boys enroll for secondary education. Globally, 5 out of every 10 unemployed are young people; in some developing countries it is 8 out of 10. 73 million adolescents between the ages of 10 and 14 are working worldwide.
      FACTS OF LIFE
      • For the vast majority, sexual relations begin in adolescence. Unprotected sexual relations increase risks of unwanted pregnancy and early childbirth, as well as unsafe abortion and sexually transmitted diseases (STD) including HIV/AIDS. Lack of knowledge and access to contraceptives as well as vulnerability to sexual abuse puts adolescents at highest risk of unwanted pregnancy. In developing countries, maternal mortality in girls under 18 is two to five times higher than in women from 18 to 25.

STDs can be painful, irritating, debilitating, and life threatening. Incidence and Prevalence STDs occur most commonly in sexually active teenagers and young adults, especially those with multiple sex partners. An estimated 200 to 400 million people worldwide are affected—representing men and women of all economic classes, including about 70 million in the United States. Generally, STD incidence has declined in the United States over the past 15 years, although rates among certain populations, including men who have sex with men, have increased. Characteristics Most STDs cause relatively harmless disease, producing few symptoms or no symptoms. However, some produce persistent asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic disease (e.g., chlamydia). Some people carry the disease for days or weeks, while others carry the disease for longer periods, even for life. During this time, an infected individual, or
