An Introduction to Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), once called venereal diseases, are among the most common infectious diseases in the United States today. More than 20 STDs have now been identified, and they affect more than 13 million men and women in this country each year. The annual comprehensive cost of STDs in the United States is estimated to be well in excess of $10 billion.
  • STDs affect men and women of all backgrounds and economic levels. They are most prevalent among teenagers and young adults. Nearly two-thirds of all STDs occur in people younger than 25 years of age. The incidence of STDs is rising, in part because in the last few decades, young people have become sexually active earlier yet are marrying later. In addition, divorce is more common. The net result is that sexually active people today are more likely to have multiple sex partners during their lives and are potentially at risk for developing STDs. Most of the time, STDs cause no symptoms, particularly in women. When and if symptoms develop, they may be confused with those of other diseases not transmitted through sexual contact. Even when an STD causes no symptoms, however, a person who is infected may be able to pass the disease on to a sex partner. That is why many doctors recommend periodic testing or screening for people who have more than one sex partner.

    Syphilis (Lues) - Treponema pallidum
Epidemiology: Between 1986-1990, the incidence of primary and secondary syphilis was reported to be at its highest level in forty years. Fortunately, in 1994 cases reported dropped to 450. Syphilis primarily occurs in the lower socioeconomic heterosexual population. Noteworthy is the dramatic increase in the number of reported syphilis cases among black women. From 1984-1989 the cases among black men rose 129% and among black women 192%. This is quite different from the cases reported in the late 1970's and early 1980's which primarily occurred in homosexual white men. Cases among this group has diminished dramatically, presmably because of the efforts of organizations such as Gay Men's Health Crisis which have educated people in the practice and importance of safe sex.
Treponema pallidum is a spirochete 5-15 micrometers in length. The organism is most easily seen under the microscope using dark-field examination or silver stain.
:Silver stain demonstrating the coiled spirochete
Incubation period: 10-90 days with an average of 21 days.

exually transmitted diseases, or STDs, are infections that can be transferred from one person to another through sexual contact. According to the Centers for Disease Control there are over 15 million cases of sexually transmitted disease cases reported annually. Adolescents and young adults (15-24) are the age groups at the greatest risk for acquiring an STD, 3 million becoming infected each year. Most STDs are treatable. However, even the once easily cured gonorrhea has become resistant to many of the older traditional antibiotics. Other STDs, such as herpes, AIDS, and genital warts, all of which are caused by viruses, have no cure. Some of these infections are very uncomfortable, while others can be deadly. Syphilis, AIDS, genital warts, herpes, hepatitis, and even gonorrhea have all been known to cause death. Many STDs can lead to related conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease cervical cancer , and complications in pregnancy. Therefore, education about these diseases and prevention is important.
