A Product of Oregon's Sea Grant Program
Sea lions are entertaining to watch. You may find them body-surfing on the waves and sunbathing on the rocks. And they are very observant. Along the coast of Oregon, sometimes you can see the sea lions bobbing around in the ocean with only their heads sticking out of the waves, observing the scene around them. From a distance they look like fat black snakes coming out of the sea; but of course, it's only sea lions treading water. (If you like to watch sea lions, you are apt to find that they like to watch you too.)
Though they are not actually related to lions, there is at least one kind of sea lion with some particularly lion like characteristics. This is the Steller Sea Lion, also known as the Northern Sea Lion. The large male Stellers have thick tawny hair around their neck and shoulders, which looks somewhat like a lion's mane (at least you can stretch your imagination to see the resemblance.)
Large male Stellers, grow to 9-11 feet and weight up to a ton. During breeding season the big bulls climb up on the rocks to breed. Sea lions do not have 'Harems', they defend a territory and breed with receptive frmales that pass through their territory. The big males roar and fight with other males. This is a noisy time of year that's also potentially dangerous from all the fighting. When baby sea lions are born they stay on the crowded rocks with the females and other pups until they are old enough to go swimming and fishing.
Historically, most of these sea lions have lived way up north in the waters around Alaska. But in recent times , the sea lions have been disappearing from Alaskan waters. Scientists are not sure what is causing the population decline. Steller sea lions were listed as a threatened species on the Federal Endangered Species list in 1990.

The following is an OLD WEBSITE describing a unique research project that is no longer being pursued. This project failed due to a combination of a lack of funding and a technical obstacle. While we were able to train the sea lions to film and follow whales and dolphins at sea, the sea lions were too encumbered by the camera and harness to keep up with the fast moving cetaceans. This project has now moved on to other exciting goals and programs. To find out more about our new project SLEWTHS please visit our new web site. A new and innovative whale filming project has begun using trained California sea lions like Beaver here to eventually film and tag whales which migrate through the Monterey Bay.

Sea Lions Best of San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf
Our favorite thing about our least favorite place, Fisherman's Wharf, are the sea lions that own Pier 39. Hidden on the left side of Pier 39 (enourmous shopping mall) are hundreds of sea lions basking in the sun. They have taken over a marina that held boats and are an incredible natural attraction. Just walk to the end of Pier 39 on the left side along the backs of the stores and behold the sea lions. They lie there, in the sun and bark- arf arf! Many people crowd around to see the sea lions, but many others never even realize they are there. If you visit the wharf, don't miss the sea lions! Tacky and over-priced, but clever we noticed this mini bungee jumping for kids on our last hideous visit to Fisherman's Wharf. For $6, your child can be suspended from elastic cords and jump on a trampoline. Stupid as this sounds, it is a pretty cool thing also just to the left of Pier 39 in the courtyard area. The ride is called "Fearless Flyer" and it was very fun for kids as shown above. Want a great hotel and a reasonable price? Check out our readers'

Main Tuesday, February 04, 2003 Terrorists Chased by Sea Lions! Oh, God, Let There be Film! Over in the very interesting and informative Back to Iraq blog, Mr. Allbritton talks about the role that sea lions real, honest-to-God Navy seals could play in patrolling the waters of the Persian Gulf, hunting down terrorists and preventing them from attaching mines to U.S and British ships. The seals would find a terrorist diver and attach a clamp to the man's body, allowing Navy personnel to reel the guy in like a fish. But what got me was this quote: "'When you study the animals and you come to realize what they can do in their own environment, the aquatic environment, it's no surprise that we have not been able to build a machine that can do what they do,' said Navy veterinarian Eric Jensen. Sea lions are preferred because, unlike dolphins, they can continue their pursuit of an enemy diver onto dry land. (James imagines a terrorist with flippers getting out of the water and running up a beach, being pursued by a patrotic, flopping and waddling sea-lion with a lure in its mouth) "Ahh! American infidel sea lions are after me! Ahh! (flop! flop! flop! flop! flop!)

Factoid: The Steller sea lion got its name from the German naturalist Wilhelm Steller, who described it as a "lion of the sea" because of its golden eyes and bellowing roar.
Status: Stellers are threatened everywhere, except the population segment in Alaska, which is endangered.
Population: 40,000 to 64,000, 70 percent of which reside in Alaska.
Threats: Sea lion populations in the Gulf of Alaska are dwindling because their prey is declining as commercial fisheries increase their take. Gunshots and net entanglement are also to blame for sea lion deaths. Stellers are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act.
Survival:
The average life span of Steller sea lions is about 20 to 23 years. Steller sea lions are the largest sea lions and are often confused with California sea lions. Steller males are larger than bears, weighing up to 2,200 pounds. They can be 8 to 11 feet long. Females are a bit smaller, at 6 to 8 feet long and 600 to 800 pounds. Stellers are light to reddish-brown and bulky. Their thick necks resemble a lion's mane, which contributes to their name.

California Sea Lions Venture North
INTRO: The Steller sea lion is listed as an endangered species in much of Alaska. And while scientists search for ways to help the species recover, a potential problem looms on the horizon. As Doug Schneider reports in this week's Arctic Science Journeys Radio, California sea lions are becoming frequent visitors to the state. STORY: Mounted high on a cliff overlooking the rocks of Chiswell Island, a popular Steller sea lion rookery in the northern Gulf of Alaska, a video camera sends images of sea lions coming and going from the island directly to the Alaska SeaLife Center, some 35 miles away in Seward. It was while watching video of the rookery that SeaLife Center researcher John Maniscalco first noticed something odd about some of the sea lions. MANISCALCO: "We started seeing a few California sea lions out at Chiswell Island through our remotely operated cameras."

Few orcas found to eat sea lions RESEARCH: Biologists find little reason to blame whales for ebbing sea lion numbers. By Doug O'Harra Anchorage Daily News Teams of biologists who spent last summer scouting Alaska's coast didn't find much evidence that killer whales or sleeper sharks have sea lions on their menus, according to reports presented Tuesday at a Marine Science conference in Anchorage. One intriguing explanation for the regional crash of Steller sea lions in the 1980s or their continued slow decline until last year hinges on rising consumption by stealthy orcas or by sharks that rise from the abyss.

Sea Lions Just as the skipper promised we have come across some Sea Lions. As the boat fights the racing tide we inch closer to the Sea Lions for some fantastic photo opportunities. Great photo of a Stellar Sea Lion. Don't believe that it is bigger than a California Sea Lion? ...lets see if the telephoto can do any better! There are two types of Sea Lions that are quite prevalent in the southern Vancouver Island area. The California, and the Stellar. How can you tell the difference? Well, that is actually quite simple. The Stellar is the largest of the Sea Lions, it can weigh upwards of 450kg (1000lb) and can be "the size of a large black bear, with the strength and teeth to match." Stellars tend to be a tan color whereas the California Sea Lion is a more chocolate-brown. The most pronounced feature that separates them is the high forehead of the California, which can't be mistaken. After it appeared that everyone had taken all of the photos that they wanted of the enigmatic Sea Lions, the skipper started the boat once more and headed to the last known position of the Gray Whales. As the boat grudgingly ripped through the racing tide the skipper spoke over the roar of the engines, "I just spotted a Gray Whale about 1 nautical mile off our bow, looks like your lucky day!" Steller sea lions are the largest of the sea lions. They are born with a dark brown coat that becomes a reddish-brown as they develop into adults.
Distribution Steller sea lions inhabit the cooler waters of the North Pacific. They are divided into two stocks - the 'western population' (Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, Russia and Japan), and the 'eastern population' (California, British Columbia and south east Alaska) Diet Steller sea lions feed near the shore on squid, octopus and fish, such as herring, mackerel and salmon. Social organization and behaviour They have also been known to hunt northern fur seal pups and harbour seals. They are hunted by sharks and killer whales. Steller sea lions are known to make dives of 400m in search of food. Males are polygamous and territorial on land. They defend the boundaries of their territories with ritual threat displays to other males.
