Understanding motorhome weights
You've probably heard it said that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. This theory applies to motorhome chassis as well. The chassis manufacturer establishes weight ratings and limitations based on the major components of the system the engine, transmission, brakes, axles, tires and frame. These components are designed to accommodate a particular weight, and if they are overloaded, their life expectancy diminishes rapidly. So, it is important for motorhome owners to understand the various weight definitions used by motorhome and chassis manufacturers. Of course, the next step is to have your motorhome weighed after you have loaded it for travel to make sure it falls within the various ratings. Weight definitions GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating): the maximum permissible weight of the fully loaded motorhome, including liquids, passengers and cargo. The GVWR is equal to or greater than the sum of the unloaded vehicle weight (UVW) plus the net carrying capacity (NCC).

The Roadtrek web site will be undergoing
scheduled maintenance and will be unavailable

From its clever, compact and quality use of every inch of space to its sleek look, from the back roads of the Northwest to the busy streets of DC and the narrow lanes of New England, the Roadtrek accommodated our needs for comfort, charm, performance and economy. We love it!... RV shows led me to believe I needed more than 19 or 21 feet for fulltiming. We ended up with a larger motorhome for awhile... Then... we down sized to the 19 foot Roadtrek. It has served us well for over a year now. We are able to travel easily with no tow vehicle. Our mileage is better, our insurance lower, and best of all, I can and do drive it. It takes us to beautiful places, to visit lots of wonderful family, and to the local supermarket...

Recreational vehicle owners have the additional problem of size to contend with when trying to avoid accidents and collisions. Because of their larger size, these vehicles are much harder to control and maneuver quickly to avoid objects in the road. Infrared technology enables drivers to see pedestrians, animals and road hazards sooner and better, no matter what the weather or time of day. Drivers can react more quickly and have time to assess the road condition ahead of them before a potential road hazard turns into a tragedy.
That's why Fleetwood Enterprises, Inc., the world's largest RV manufacturer, is offering Night Vision featuring Raytheon Infrared technology on all of their new motorhomes. Raytheon's Night Vision is assisting drivers daily in the struggle to keep our roads safe.

Thor Attempts Takeover of Coachmen Industries Wall Street was abuzz last month with news of Thor's (Thor Industries, Inc. [NYSE: THO]) unsolicited takeover of Coachmen Industries, Inc. (NYSE: COA). At press-time, no resolution of the takeover bid had been reached. It all started on April 17 with Thor's pressure tactic, known as a "bear hug" where Thor made a public announcement of a letter to Coachmen's board written by Thor chairman Wade Thompson that said Thor was prepared to acquire Coachmen for $18 a share, with the consideration consisting of 60 percent cash and 40 percent Thor stock a premium of about 42 percent over Coachmen's closing price on Friday, April 14. Thor also said it wanted to complete a friendly transaction, and said it would consider raising its offer if it found additional value after examination of Coachmen's nonpublic financial data. Coachmen responded in a statement that its directors would review the $18-a-share takeover bid, and urged shareholders to take no immediate action. Coachmen pointed out that its board rejected a $17-a-share bid from Thor a month earlier. That bid was for 50 percent in cash and 50 percent in stock.
