Teaching Language Through Action
As an ESL/Foreign Language Teacher Trainer for the last 21 years, I have often been asked about proper materials to successfully implement the TPR and Natural Approaches. I am happy to share these with you. I hasten to let you know beforehand that every one of these books has been tested in the classroom. Either I personally have found each of these successful, or I have observed teachers using these successfully. Each of these has been proven to be outstanding. These books are user-friendly, providing activities that are full of fun, and EACH ONE WORKS!! I have been careful to indicate the level of each work. This refers to the LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY LEVEL, NOT THE GRADE LEVEL. To be more specific: Level 1 refers to the student who is starting at Ground Zero, whether the student is 5, 15 or 25 years old. This is the Listening Comprehension level. Level 2 Going from Listening Comprehension, and making the transition to Speaking, Reading, and Writing. activities.

Dr. Brooks Green goes to Russia
While some people spent their summer break going on vacation, Dr. Brooks Green, associate professor of Geography, along with six elementary and secondary school teachers and six undergraduate pre-service teachers, spent five weeks in Ryazan, Russia learning about Russian language, culture, and history.
During the first two weeks of the trip the teachers primarily studied at Ryazan State Pedagogical University where they learned Russian language and history. Green also taught the course Cultural Geography of Russia, and Dora Bradley, a teacher at Lakewood Middle School, taught a curriculum development course that guided everyone through web page design and lesson-plan development. The third and fourth weeks of the trip the teachers ventured to Meschorskiy National Park where they were taught about natural resources, visited historical sites, participated in an archeological dig, and helped construct a log cabin for children to play in. A couple of weekends were spent touring Moscow and St. Petersburg.

There is a phenomenon we are all too familiar with: Young people who had studied a language for 3-5 years could conjugate verbs and recite vocabulary, but typically lacked the ability to actually communicate. Maybe you were one of these? With that concern in mind, we have done a careful study of language teachers and students who were achieving remarkable results. These observations led us to go to Japan and spend years evaluating and experimenting with many teaching methods while producing materials for translators, Peace Corps Volunteers, and Japanese students of all ages. We learned from and collaborated with dozens of world-renowned teachers and combined the best methods into many exciting language learning to learn japanese
