Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov won one of the first prizes of the contest The mayor of the Russian capital was the runner-up in the nomination the Most Egregiously Stupid Award. This was the prize for Luzhkov's persistent striving to preserve Propiska identity papers, which means a special permission for foreigners and even citizens of Russia to be in Moscow. The winner himself slightly cares about problems that arise in connection with propiska and registration in Moscow. Russian Government Issues Warnings to Radical Parties
While the Bank of Russia issues a new coin, depicting satanic images
The end of the past year and the beginning of the current one are remarkable for the unusual prosperity of political activity in tiny pseudo-patriotic structures. There has been a project set up, for example, which is called the United Radical People’s Party. The promotion of the new organization is in full swing at the moment. The whole process takes place with the participation of such political groups as the National Bolshevik Party, the People’s Social Work Party, the Movement Against Slander and Corruption, the Civic Position Movement, and others.
According to the information from the news agency Desnitsa , the new project is coordinated by a man named Aleksey Romanov. Another event, which is worth mentioning in this respect, is the fact that resigned army officers keep joining various political structures. This event is also typical for the beginning of the current year, although the press did not pay much attention to it.
The St.Petersburg department of the Russian Patriotic Party was registered on December 25th, 2002. Colonel in Reserve Petrov was elected its chairman. Russian former Defense Minister Igor Rodionov also takes a high position in the same party as well. The goal of the Russian Patriotic Party is to make Russia become the leader of the so-called historic process. The program of the party does not mention a word about another patriotic movement – the Cossacks, which caused a negative reaction on their part.

Moscow Times, tuesday, february 24, 1998 • page VI WEB WATCH Russian Government Online By Bill Pick The topic of my last column, the dangers of a new law on mass media under discussion in the State Duma, generated much interest and reader e-mail. The proposed law could make web pages and other internet communication subject to the complex registration requirements and other regulations that govern newspapers and television. I have no real news to add on the story, but what strikes me most starkly is that few observers and commentators question the need for a law on mass media in the first place and confine themselves to debating the fine points of the legislation. I am much more comfortable with the hands-off American approach to this problem, which goes something like this: "Congress shall make no law " (First Amendment to the Constitution). At a minimum, the burden of proof ought to be on lawmakers to demonstrate a need for regulation, rather than forcing Russia's citizens to "prove they are not camels" in Gogolian fashion under the classic "all that is not explicitly permitted is forbidden" doctrine If Duma deputies still feel an irresistible need to dip their toes into the waters of Internet legislation, they could begin more usefully by establishing some ground rules for web publishing by government ministries and departments. Russian government decides to ditch the Mir station

The Russian government appeared to seal the fate of the Mir space station on Thursday, deciding to ditch the aging space outpost in February. "The government has agreed that [Mir] be taken out of orbit and brought down into the Pacific Ocean in a pre-determined area off Australia between February 26 and 28," Russian space agency chief Yuri Koptev said after a meeting of the Russian cabinet in Moscow. The space station's demise would come 15 years after its first module was launched into orbit by the then Soviet Union. "Nothing can last for eternity even the Mir," Koptev said. Faced with a lack of commercial backing, the Russian aerospace industry reluctantly recommended last month that the station be sent to a watery grave in the Pacific Ocean. Mir Corp., the international consortium hoping to commercialise the outpost, had failed to come up with enough money to keep Mir alive, despite signing an agreement to fly businessman Dennis Tito to station early next year. Mir Corp. officials could not be reached Thursday for comment, but the company issued a statement saying it was aware of the reports from Moscow.
