    Winchester Rugby Football Club
was founded in October of 2001, by bagel-crazy Kiwi Bill Bradley who had a desire to see his national sport transplanted in his new hometown. The club quickly attracted a solid core of players, both experienced and not. For a small, Virginia city, we have a surprisingly international team, with members from Ireland, Australia, England, Canada, Paraguay and South Africa. Team members range in age from 20 to 49, and come from a variety of occupations, from stockbrokers to schoolteachers.
Winchester RFC applied for and was granted admission to the Virginia Rugby Union in January of 2002 where it competes as a Division III Men’s team. WRFC competes in both Spring and Fall seasons, primarily in Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. In the summer, Winchester fields a traveling 7s team that competes along the East Coast.

A little bit of rugby history
The legend of the game of College Rugby begins (England)
First set of written rules (England)
    "Football Association" is founded (England)
Soccer (a game which condemns the use of one's hands during play) became separate from "Rugby-Football" whose distinctive traits, such as scrums and carrying the ball in one's hands were deemed too different from soccer. Rugby is introduced to Canada First national organisation "Rugby Football Union" (England) First International Match : England vs Scotland Adoption of the offside law. First inter-university match in North America. "Westmount Rugby Football Club" is founded. WRFC is the oldest rugby club still active in North America. "Canadian Rugby-Football Union" is founded Creation of the "International Rugby Football Board" (United Kingdom) The IRB was founded by the major rugby nations to insure respect of the amateur laws and to protect players from violence. End of XIXth The game played at this time was very different to what we know now. In effect the game was dominated by scrums and a huge emphasis was placed on the kicking game. Thus, the try (the act of touching the ball down in the endzone to score) was simply seen as a means to kick for points. Tactical and technical changes allowed the game to evolve. Lineouts, the pass, tackling and a more balanced ratio of forwards to backs (previously the number of forwards was much greater than the number of backs) led to added emphasis on the running try. The number of players was fixed at 15 (permitting that the field was large enough) and the roles of the positions were more precisely delineated. The game expanded throughout the British empire, as well as areas that did business with the English (Argentina, France...). Rugby rapidly became a popolar sport and was soon added to scholastic curriculums.

The Summer Paralympic Games are the ultimate competition for world class elite athletes with a disability and as such are linked to the Olympic Celebration each quadrennium. The Paralympic Games, in terms of complexity, duration and the number of competitors, are second only to the Olympic Games.
The fundamental philosophy guiding the Paralympic movement is that athletes with disabilities should have opportunities to pursue their goals in sport equivalent to those of non-disabled athletes. Athletes who compete in the Paralympics set their sights on the dream of winning a gold medal, are committed to strenuous training regimes and meet strict qualifying standards to be selected to their national team. The Paralympic Games represent a commitment to excellence that allows elite athletes to achieve their personal best. The Paralympic Games exemplify the Olympic ideal of participation and sportsmanship.

Wilkinson makes history, England beats France
Click here for more on this story Posted: Saturday April 07, 2001 12:03 PM Jamie McDonald/Allsport LONDON (Reuters) England fullback Iain Balshaw, the discovery of the Six Nations season, scored a crucial second-half try to lift the tournament leader to a 48-19 victory over France at Twickenham on Saturday. Balshaw's touch down, one of six England tries on the day, gave the home side its fourth victory in the championship as flyhalf Jonny Wilkinson kicked his way into the record books scoring his 407th point for his country. With England only leading 20-19 after 59 minutes, Balshaw took a long pass from Wilkinson and sprinted to the line to finish off another impressive performance after making two try-saving tackles in the first half. It was a crucial psychological blow for the English who added further second-half tries through hooker Phil Greening, centre Mike Catt and replacement fullback Matt Perry on the way to their fourth consecutive win after victories against Wales, Italy and Scotland.

History By Robert Cullem It doesn't seem possible that twenty-four years have gone by since Bill Smith, Jack Delany and I were sitting in a bar discussing the possibility of forming a rugby club within the New York Athletic Club, but it was January of 1973. The Club had been approached by another group some fourteen years earlier but the time just was not ripe, and the club turned them down. This time though, the game had enjoyed a terriffic growth, particularly around New York City, and Jack Delaney was very enthusiastic about supporting us and using his influence to gain support from the Board of Governors. They quickly assigned us a buget of $1000, which was mind boggling at the time to Billy and me. We had spent nearly 20 years playing with rugby clubs who existed through the Christmas raffle.
Before the first game, George Mayer and I were assigned the task of going up to Travers Island and to survey the playing conditions. We found a 200 year old tree in the in-goal area, a baseball diamond on one end, and four shot putting rings, which were actually steel rings filled with seven inches of reinforced concrete, on our new playing field. Naturally, they strategically placed right at the half-way and inside the touch lines. We had to use great imagination to lay out the pitch in the form of a parallelogram so that the tree, which was at least 6 inches in diameter, would fall in the in goal area, rather than on the playing area.

SOUTH AFRICAN OLYMPIC HISTORY Our involvement over the last century of the Olympics South Africa’s involvement in the Olympics is as diverse and complicated as the history surrounding the modern Olympics, since it’s birth in Athens in 1896. It seems very appropriate that a Winter Olympics tainted by a bribery scandal before it had even begun will ultimately be remembered for some of the most controversial judging decisions in sporting history. When 72 nations marched into Rice-Eccles Olympic Stadium here on a frigid night ripe with possibilities more than two weeks ago, it was hoped that here at last was an opportunity for a little much-needed global fraternity.

Ananova: Olympic sport guide - Table Tennis A guide to the Olympic sport of Table Tennis. Technical details Players toss a coin to decide who will serve. The serve changes after every five serves. Points are scored by the player who wins each rally. The game is won by a player reaching 21 points, unless the game goes to 20 all, in which case the winning player must be two points clear. Matches are determined by the best of three sets. At the knock-out stage, it is the best of five sets. Over the years, there have been many changes to the bat. These have included: the sponge layers between the blade and rubber; use of different rubbers the same colour, which gave rise to players 'twiddling' the bat below the surface of the table and concealing the type of spin. Although 'twiddling' is now permitted at the Games, the bats have different coloured rubbers on each side. But they must be at least 85% natural wood. The latest advances is the use of fast glues, which remain wet, because they are used to fix the rubber and are designed to give greater speed. However, there is a ban on the most toxic glues being used. Tables measure 2.74m in length, 1.525m wide and 0.760m high. The table surface must be dark coloured and is usually blue or green. The net must be 15.25cm above the table. The ball is made of celluloid and weighs 2.5gm.
