Wayland Boats Merry Wherry Kits Alden Boats the adventure begins - Alaska beckons!
The Sport Recreational rowing, whether it be called sculling, sliding-seat rowing or open-water rowing offers on-the-water fun and fitness. Sliding seat rowing is a low stress, balanced, full body fitness concept providing aerobic conditioning in your own private fitness club. Joggers, cyclists, and kayakers turn to sculling for an on-the-water fitness alternative. Accomplished club scullers choose open -water shells as a way to get more rowing time , when and where they choose without the need for perfect conditions. There is remarkable satisfaction feeling the water flowing over the oar blades, the boat surging forward as it whispers to the waves, and your body gliding forward to repeat that magic stroke!
The Company Wayland Marine, Ltd was founded by Ron Mueller in 1989 to manufacture rowing shell kits. Recreational rowing is our only focus - the founder rows daily throughout the year in our gentle Northwest climate - and our products reflect an excellence from "rowing the talk". Merry Wherry kits are designed and manufactured in our waterside Bellingham shop where we sell factory direct to hundreds of world-wide customers. The exciting new Breeze and Sea Ranger shells are from our acquisition of Trimline by Graham - a major Northwest rowing line. And we are delighted to represent Alden Rowing Shells as their Northwest dealer for over ten years. We are here to service what we sell - you can count on it!

  • Email us! ABOUT OPEN WATER ROWING ... Have you ever wanted to go out when the chop was bigger than your shell -or you - could comfortably handle? What about those days when you started out on decent water that blew up into a nasty mess during your workout, leaving you wondering if you'd get back to the boathouse? Have you ever looked out over a large, unprotected, beautiful body of water that offered miles and miles of sculling and wished you had a shell that could get you out there? These days there is a solution to all those situations - open water rowing and the shells designed for it. Many of you may be familiar with the Alden Ocean shell, introduced in 1971 as a cross between the stability of a rowing dory and the workout and speed potential of a racing single. The intention was to have a sculling boat that would serve the needs of novice scullers as well as those who had no choice but to row in frequently choppy waters that a racing single couldn't handle. In the almost twenty years since the Alden appeared, that breed of shell has come into use across the country and that increase encouraged the introduction of other such shell designs by companies on both coasts. These shells were shorter, wider, heavier and slower than racing singles. They were known as "recreational shells", and the sport,"recreational rowing", since - it was assumed - most were used by peoplejust out for the exercise and fun of it, certainly not by people seriously working on technique or training for racing.

    The Rec-Racer III Top View
History of the Rec-Racer II and Rec-Racer III:
The Durham Boat Company began importing the original Rec-Racer in 1984 and that proved to be a very speedy and popular boat. Initially we imported the entire boat. Gradually we moved to purchasing and installing all the hardware, to the point now where we manufacture all the major sub-assemblies that go into making the boat. We manufacture the footstretchers, seats, and riggers on the top-of-the-line boats as well as install all other hardware and custom rig the boat. In 1994, we changed the design to slightly increase its maximum capacity, while further improving on its speed and rowing efficiency. The changes have been very well received. In 1995 and 1996, the boat was used in the Blackburn Challenge. (i.e., approximately 20 mile race around Cape Ann, near Glouster, MA in open water conditions) Both years a course record was set, beating all manufacturers of recreational rowing shells. With the addition of our own all carbon sub-assemblies we have provided equal or better rigging than one would find on top line racing singles. Through extensive use of the boats in our own sculling school and club, we have over the years received much valuable feedback as how best to improve upon equipment design and optimize boat set-up and rigging. We are confident that we have designed the boat so that the rower feels comfortable in the boat, yet still have enough feedback from the boat so as to not develop bad habits from rowing a boat that is too forgiving.
