Recreational Rowing Program
Purpose:
To provide WRRA full members an opportunity for more rowing time on a regularly scheduled basis. Most sessions are coached. To all rowers interested in recreational rowing program: We are currently looking for anyone who would like to get in extra water time this summer in organized groups with coached practices (with the word organized being used very loosely). Please email either John Trainer (jtrainer@mail.com) or Stephanie Muzevich (smuzevich@aol.com) if you are interested in rowing with the rec program. Please include in your email: 1) if you are a port, starboard, cox, or any combination; and 2) which of the practices would you most likely attend (this does not obligate you to those times, we just want a general count of interested rowers). You may row as many times per week as you want. There will be an organizational meeting either some time in March or early April. Details will be announced soon. Also, if you have not done so already, please join the rec rowing email group. After the start of the season we will only send emails out to the rec rowing group. To join see the instructions below . Below are some of the details of the 2003 Recreational Rowing program.

Sprint
Design Your Own Rowing Shell The number one, most asked question by those both new and old to the sport of rowing is ... "Where can I find the ideal entry level, open water rowing shell"? Little River Marine has responded to your quest, and added the SPRINT to our complete line of recreational rowing craft. By design, the SPRINT offers all the features you should look for in an introductory craft, such as: Stability
A "must" characteristic that insures the novice of a sure-handed row, and the veterans of a safe and comforting row. With a little "trick of the trade," you can even let go of the oars, which may encourage taking that fishing pole on your next row. Seaworthiness
It's very rewarding to know that the SPRINT can challenge most any rowable condition, and get you home dry. The high reverse splashrails are designed to turn away any wave your bow dips into. They surround the enclosed cockpit and together are your guarantee to tackling rougher waters. Even a sloping rear deck was added to ship out any water that dares to enter. By knowing this, you can't sink or swamp this shell, which also makes it one of the safest rowing shells on the market today.

Design Your Own Rowing Shell
The Pro Am 25 and Pro Am ELITE are a new breed of advanced rowing craft. We've taken the function and durability of a recreational shell and designed it into a stylish, lightweight, challenging unit. Their racy lines and high-tech components allow you to advance your skills far beyond those achieved in a traditional recreational craft, without having to sacrifice the ruggedness or stability you have come to appreciate. The Pro Am series combines the best of two rowing worlds - they can generate speeds found in competitive sculls, and they can tackle the rougher waters only before capable in a larger recreational craft. Over the past 15 years, we have watched the rowing consumer grow from a casual interest to a serious buyer. With this has come a progressive increase in each individual's rowing skills, and the demand for an accommodating craft. Until now, skilled rowers had to make a choice between sticking with a basic recreational craft, or making a drastic jump to a more fragile, less stable Olympic-caliber racer, having to give up those features that encourage an everyday "knock around" approach to rowing. The Pro Am series fills this niche and is now the hottest ticket in recreational rowing.

March 26, 1998 Recreational rowing: (page 2) Demanding workout and building team spirit are key to crewing Recently, the yacht club crew allowed a rowing rookie to join them during a morning session, which typically begins well before dawn because the water is usually calmest in the early hours and other boat traffic is light. The short ride demonstrated that total focus is required, for several reasons. First, you must match the rowing cadence of all the other crew members, and the cadence can vary, such as on starts: half-stroke, half-stroke, three-quarters, full. Secondly, to reduce wind resistance on the "recovery" or return part of each stroke, the rower must turn the oar so the blade is parallel, or flat, to the surface of the water. On the drive segment of the stroke, the blade must bite the water at the proper depth. Too deep wastes energy; too shallow wastes power. During and after the stroke, the seat in the boat slides as the rower's body extends and compacts, and this must also be timed precisely.

Web Design Feedback to Us Sports: Rowing Background Equipment Where Background Rowing is a sport that helps achieve a total body workout. Rowing takes place in a rowing "shell" a long, narrow and very light boat holding either one, two, four or eight participants. The shells are only slightly wider than a person's shoulders and about ten inches deep and are propelled by oars on each side. In a "eights" shell, there are four oars on the each side, one for each rower. Each rower sits on a sliding seat, with their feet strapped to the boat, to exert their full force to pull the oar back and push the boat. Competitive rowers race at the pace of a four minute mile through water The rowing action is as follows:
  • The rower reaches forward with the oar, arms fully extended

CHARACTERISTICS Length overall 17'-2" Beam 27 1/2" Depth amidship 10" Passengers Weight less seat (approx.) 40 lbs. Hull type: Vee-bottom hull for 4mm sheet plywood Stitch and Glue construction.
Power: High performance spoon-shaped sculling oars, with riggers and sliding seat. R owing or sculling is a fun and invigorating way to get in shape. The feeling of gliding over the water at a high rate of speed with nothing more than people power is indescribable. The problem is that most craft suited to this sport are expensive and, in the past, trying to build your own was not easy. O ur Stitch-N-Glue method changes all of that. Just about anyone can build our SCULLING SKIFF quickly, easily, and with only a minumum of tools. Two sheets of 4mm x 4' x 8' plywood plank the entire boat. When these thin metric panels are used, the finished weight will be comparable to the costly production jobs. In fact, the original prototype hull weighed only 39 lbs. ... incredible for a 17' boat. A lthough you can equip your SCULLING SKIFF with a production sliding seat/sculling assembly, our plans even include complete details and Full Size Patterns to build your own sliding seat and riggers from readily available materials. There's no reason to deny yourself any longer. You can now have your own high-performance, high-tech SCULLING SKIFF with just a few days of fun and not even miss the money it takes.
