Recreational Rowing
Recreational rowers enjoy all the pleasures of rowing without any of the pressures of competing. We have a fleet of boats that are reserved exclusively for recreational members. Our recreational fleet includes:
  • Sweep boats, Sculling doubles and quads, Large Boats, Small Boats, and Touring boats for longer outings.
Touring
Are you interested in touring? The ORC Touring Groups goes on trips in our stable touring boats. Find out when the next tour is scheduled.
Find a partner
There are a number of recreational crews who organize themselves for regular outings and occasional racing. Use our bulletin board and membership lists to find yourself a crew or partner.
Pre-Requisite
New rowers are required to take a Learn-to-Row class for safety reasons. Before you take out the small sculling boats, you will have to take a Sculling Clinics We offer these classes regularly. The classes will teach you everything you need to enjoy your rowing outings safely.
Coaching
We are fortunate to have a number of volunteer coaches who offer assistance to recreational members. These coaches will help organize crews and offer on-water assistance and advice. Come down on one of the drop-in evenings for recreational rowing fun. Look for the schedules on the bulletin board or give us a call.

Recreational Rowing at Star Club
Star Club recognises the increasing interest in rowing as a good basis for general fitness among people who want to enjoy themselves while improving and maintaining their health. Rowing offers a basis for exercising most of the major muscle groups in a gentle way, improving suppleness and is especially beneficial for cardiovascular fitness. It offers individual and team based activity in an open air setting at all times of the year. Many of the recreational rowers start as adults of all ages and may not have pursued a regular sport before trying rowing. Members progress at their own desired pace and are helped and steered by the many qualified coaches at Star Club. The club has a policy of encouraging members of all ages to gain coaching qualifications and to give support to the rowing members. Some of the recreational rowers may have been active oarsmen and women in the past and have returned to enjoy their rowing but not to follow a strict training plan as they might have at one time. Many other recreational rowers have been attracted to join as parents of Junior members and have continued to enjoy an active part in Club life. Mixed groups sometimes arrange to form crews on a Sunday morning or Summer evening, perhaps to keep fit but always for the sheer pleasure of gentle exercise with friends on an attractive stretch of the River Great Ouse. Outings are typically rounded off in the Club with coffee and snacks or a drink at the Bar. Others may prefer to go out in single sculls and work at their own pace.

Whatever your choice you can come and enjoy a row on the Otonabee River from 4pm to 8pm, Monday to Friday, and Sundays 11am to 4pm. This year, an experienced member can row Tuesday and Thursday mornings 7am to 9am. During these times the staff will be around for coaching or to lend a hand. You can also reserve time with staff members, or attend a scheduled rowing group. Recreational rowers will be given the opportunity to attend a regatta near the end of the season. This is a great chance to test out your new skills and have some fun. The regatta this year will be the Hogstown Heats. The regatta is held at the Argonaut Rowing Club in Toronto on August 24. March 26, 1998 Recreational rowing: Crewing and sculling are making a splash By GREG JOHNSTON
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER What would make eight adult women eager to wake before dawn three days each week and work out almost until they're weary often in cold, wet and windy weather? Fitness and good health, for sure. But more importantly, an intense camaraderie created by the interdependence of a crew. And a lighter-than-air feeling captured fleetingly. "It's total synchronicity, eight people all together," explains Mari Jalbing, 47, a member of the Seattle Yacht Club's women's crew. "It's a very elusive feeling, but once you've experienced it, it makes up for 1,000 bad rows. "It feels effortless. You have the feeling of flying. Your blade cuts the water at the exact same time as everyone else's."

They are lightweight so can easily be handled by their crew (single or double) and are ideal for transporting on roof racks or, if you prefer, trailers. Their rigging allows you to make full use of your legs so you move quickly and you exercise your whole body. Virus boats are stable yet quick
These fast boats are not the scarily unstable craft you would find in the average rowing club (one false move and you are making your way to the tumble drier). No, they are eminently suitable for the raw novice. In fact, clubs buy them to introduce beginners to the sport so that they don't spend most of their time falling in The unique Kataram

    About Us
RUM International, Inc., a family owned and operated business, offers one-of-a-kind, quality products backed by excellent customer service. Rowing is the passion that powers our business. A recreational rather than a competitive perspective guides our understanding of our customers' needs. True to our recreational perspective, RUM International markets Virus Rowing Boats. After a search of the market, RUM International began importing the French-made Virus (pronounced vee'rus) boats in 1998. Our research found that few "true" recreational boats were available and all were made of either fiberglass or wood. Virus offers fiberglass and "polyethylene". Virus boats are unique, first and foremost, in the innovative use of "polyethylene" - a tough durable plastic. It is the material used in the construction of our strong, low maintenance hulls and decks. Secondly, with the reintroduction of the "sliding-rigger" system, which employs a fixed seat and sliding rigger attached to the foot stretcher. This design eliminates "stern check" while the boat is in forward motion.
