Romania's Great Cities Great Romanians Gallery Romanian History Vurpar, Transylvania, Romania is a typical European village, typically Transylvanian and thoroughly immersed in the history of their rich and troubled country. The Dacians occupied present day Romania long before the Roman Legions subjugated them. The 300-year long Roman occupation resulted in a new nationality, the Romanians. After the 1st Century AD Roman Legions withdrew in the face of repeated assaults from the east, and the people they left behind climbed into the safety of the Carpathians only to repopulate the surrounding plains some three hundred years later. As they were foreign subjects they asked their consuls to intercede, and in 1819 the prince of Moldavia decided that the hakham bashi should have jurisdiction only over "native" Jews. Under this system there was also a Jews' Guild, one of 32 guilds set up according to nationality (Armenians, Greeks, etc.) or profession, which took care of tax collection proportionately to the number of persons organized in it. Hungarians in Romania INTRODUCTION Hungarians in Transylvania Following the end of World War I, the 1920 Trianon Peace Treaty confirmed the cession of Transylvania to Romania. The Hungarians living in Transylvania became a minority in Romania. Ethnic Hungarians in Romania Romania acquired its present western geographical borders through the annexation of Transylvania as a result of the Trianon Peace Treaty of 4 June 1920. The successive Romanian governments ignored the minority agreement, which was signed before the Trianon Treaty on 9 November 1919, and was never ratified by the Romanian legislature. That part of the Hungarian nation which was transferred to Romania stepped on the path of self-organization. They adapted themselves to the new circumstances and created new organizations and a political party, the National Hungarian Party. Region Area: 237,500 km2 Total population: 22,810,035 (according to the 1992 census) Ethnic groups: Romanian (89,5%), Hungarian (7,1%), Roma (1,8%), German (0,5%), Ukrainian (0,3%), Russian-Lipovan (0,2%), Turkish (0,1%), Serb (0,1%), Tatar (0,1%), Slovak (0,1%).

Historian Mihai Dancus, in his cluttered office at the Ethnographic Museum, reads his father's journal. FRONTLINE/World visits the remote Romanian hometown of Nobel prizewinner Eli Wiesel and finds a testament to memory. An eyewitness diary and a newly established museum speak to the forced removal of Jews decades earlier. Visitors to Romania who venture as far north as Maramures County, up near Romania's border with Ukraine and Hungary, usually describe the area as untouched by the 20th century. Outsiders are charmed by the stocky, often toothless, peasant women in short black pleated skirts and chunky woolen sweaters; the soaring spires of churches confected of thousands of wooden shingles; the villages where young women in search of a husband hang their brightly enameled pots and pans on the trees to signal a rich dowry; the betasseled horses pulling rustic carts; the traditional singing and dancing.

    History
(Adapted from "History of Romanians" - Ion Calafeteanu) Books on Romanian History
    The Dacians

Romania is situated in Central Europe, in the northern part of the Balkan peninsula and its territory is marked by the Carpathian Mountains, the Danube and the Black Sea. With its temperate climate and varied natural environment, which is favourable to life, the Romanian territory has been inhabited since time immemorial.
The research done by Romanian archaeologists has led to the discovery of traces of human presence dating back as early as two million years BC.
At the turn of the second millennium, when the Palaeolithic age made way for the Bronze age, the Thracian tribes of Indo-European origin settled alongside the population that already lived in the Carpathian-Balkan region. From the time of the Thracians on, the uninterrupted phenomenon of the Romanian people’s birth can be traced. The contact of the Geto-Dacians, a Thracian tribe ("the wisest and the most correct one" -Herodot) with the Greek world was made easy by the Greek colonies created on the present-day Romanian Black Sea shore: Istros (Histria), founded in the 7th century BC, Callatis (today: Mangalia) and Tomi (today: Constanta).
Burebista the king (82 - around 44 BC), who succeeded to unite the Geto-Dacian tribes for the first time, founded a powerful kingdom that stretched, when the Dacian sovereign offered to support Pompey against Caesar (48 BC), from the Beskids (north), the Middle Danube (west), the Tyras river (the Dniester), and the Black Sea shore (east) to the Balkan Mountains (south).
