ROMANIA The history of aviation in Romania began very early, with the work of Conrad Hass (1551-1579), an artillery engineer and chief of arsenal of the town of Sibiu. Hass wrote about the construction and the flight tests of multistage rockets, apparently the earliest writings in existence about the science of rocket engineering. One of the first suggestions for equipping a dirigible with a jet engine dates back as far as 1886, when Romanian inventor Alexandro Ciurcu (1884-1922), together with Frenchman Just Buisson, suggested that an aerostat built and exhibited with an electric engine at the Paris Exhibition of Electricity in 1881 be provided instead with their jet cylinder. Ciurcu built and tested their original first jet engine on a small ship running on the Seine River in Paris in 1886 and on a rail car in 1888. In February 1903, the work of Traian Vuia (1872-1950), "Projet d'Aeroplane-automobile," was published. On this original aircraft, designed and built by Vuia and containing only the third aircraft engine made to that date, Vuia performed the first flight of a heavier-than-air aircraft in the history of aviation. It took off at Montesson, near Paris, on 18 March 1906, flying by the power of its engine with no auxiliary equipment. Henri Coanda (1886-1972) constructed the first jet aircraft in the world, named the Coanada-1910, in 1910. The aircraft was exhibited at the International Aeronautical Show (Paris, 1910) and Coanda tested the engine near Paris. He performed the first reactive flight, but it ended in an accident: the aircraft side-slipped, fell, and burned. Coanda also was the constructor of the first twin-engine aircraft in the history of aeronautics (1911). He used two Gnome engines with seven rotating cylinders each, connected on the same shaft and driving a single four-blade airscrew.

History and Government
History:
Securitate (secret police) mounted a desperate bid to prevent the collapse of the regime, during which thousands were killed.
The President and his wife were captured, quickly tried and executed. The new government, under the provisional leadership of Ion Iliescu (the former Communist Central Committee Secretary) was faced with a number of acute problems: the pacification of the country; the disbanding of the Securitate
The ruling National Salvation Front eventually split into two factions led by Petre Roman, Prime Minister for eighteen months in 1990 and 1991, and President Iliescu, who formed his own breakaway party, the Democratic National Salvation Front (later renamed the Social Democratic Party of Romania). Over the next decade, it was the Social Democrats who prevailed while the Roman faction dwindled away. However, at the November 1996 elections, the Social Democrats lost control of both the presidency and the national assembly, to a five-party centre-right alliance entitled the Democratic Convention of Romania (DCR).
Partidul Romania Mare (PDR, Party of Great Romania). The Social Democrats rely on a handful of smaller parties to guarantee a parliamentary majority, but the nationalists are now the principal opposition group in the national assembly.

HISTORY
Situated at a crossroads of civilizations, graced with a harmoniously distributed relief, Romania brought an original touch in the concert of universal history and culture, attesting to a tormented but not less glorious past. The history of the Romanians is, undoubtedly, part of the European history, perhabs one of the most eventful. Born, like the other Romance people, in A.D. 1st millennium, the Romanian people has continuously inhabited the selfsame geographical place from the old times to this day, a space where its forefathers belonging to the Thracian king had arrived as early as the 2nd millennium B.C.
Today the Romanians are the sole descendants of the Eastern Roman world, and their language, along with Spanish, Portuguese, French and Italian, is one of the major of-spring of Latin. They are the sole people who by their name - roman (deriving from the Latin romanus ) have preserved to this day the memory of the Seal of Rome, a memory to be perpetuted later in the name adopted by the nation State Romania . It is a Romance isle that has endured in a sea of Slavic and Finno-Ugric neighbours, in a region that had been devastated for more than a millennium by all

... Photos General Ion Antonescu came to power in September 1940. He signed the Tripartite Pact in November 1940. As of 1941 Romania had 35 Czech R-1 tankettes, 126 R-2 , 73 French R-35 (some were obtained from the Polish 21st Armored Battalion who had fled to Romania in 1939), and 60 FT-17 s. The 1st Tank Regiment had the R-2s , the 2nd Tank Regiment had the R-35s , and the 1st Royal Cavalry had the R-1s. Due to the lack of spare parts the R-35 were not part of the attack on Russia in 1941. After the drive on Odessa and the Don campaigns of 1942 the tanks were worn out. In September of 1942 PzKpfw IIIs and IVs were purchased from Germany. After the disaster at Stalingrad the Germans provided 50 PzKpfw 38(t)s in March 1943 to the 1st Tank Regiment. From November 1943 PzKpfw IVs and StuG IIIs were supplied. The Brasov factory in 1942 started to convert the R-2s to self-propelled anti-tank mounts with captured ZiS-3 76 mm Soviet guns. The Germans later provided Soviet T-60 tanks that had the Soviet F-22 76 mm added. They were designated TACAM ( Tun autopropulsat cu afet mobile 76.2 mm) R-2 or T-60.

Romania Sees NATO Membership As Remedy for
Post-Communist Ills
BUCHAREST, Romania Thirteen years after it cast off communism, Romania is struggling with poverty, corruption, dysfunctional politics, incomplete economic reform the list goes on and on. But Romania now sees a one-stop cure for many of its ills: the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. In Bucharest, Romania's bustling, traffic-jammed capital, N-A-T-O spells relief. Though not yet officially invited to join the alliance, Romanian officials now know that an invitation will be issued at next month's NATO summit in Prague, and they are jubilant. "It's a new beginning," President Ion Iliescu said in an interview here. Joining NATO will allow Romania "to be integrated into the civilized world, and to receive necessary support for internal reform," Iliescu added. From points farther West, the inclusion of Romania is seen as part of a somewhat risky and dramatic enlargement of the alliance, from 19 to 26 members, in hopes of further stabilizing democracy and free markets in Eastern Europe. Officials in Washington readily acknowledge that modern Romania is not what usually comes to mind when the phrase "NATO ally" is uttered. But from here, joining NATO is seen almost as a divine gift "manna from Heaven . . . something from God that will transform the country," in the words of Tata Marian, leader of a pro-democracy group in the provincial city of Brasov.

    History of Romania (ICI)
Romania is situated in Central Europe, in the northern part of the Balkan peninsula and its territory is marked by the Carpathian Mountains, the Danube and the Black Sea. With its temperate climate and varied natural environment, which is favourable to life, the Romanian territory has been inhabited since time immemorial. The research done by Romanian archaeologists at Bugiulesti, Valcea Country, has led to the discovery of traces of human presence dating back as early as the Lower Palaeolithic (approximately two million years BC). These vestiges are among the oldest in Europe, revealing a period when "man," a humanoid in fact, went physically and spiritually through the stages of his coming out of the animal status. A denser human population, ("the Neanderthal man") can be proved to have lived about 100,000 years ago; a relatively stable population can only be found beginning with the Neolithic (6-5,000 years BC).
Cucuteni pottery At the time, the population on the territory of present-day Romania created a remarkable culture, whose proof is the polychrome pottery of the "Cucuteni" culture (comparable to the pottery of other important European cultures of the time in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East) and the statuettes of the "Hamangia" culture (the Thinker of Hamangia is known today to the whole world).

HISTORY This section is courtesy of Romanian National Tourism Office for North America. Romania's history has not been as idyllically peaceful as its geography. Over the centuries, various migrating people invaded Romania. Romania's historical provinces Wallachia and Moldova offered furious resistance to the invading Ottoman Turks. Transylvania was successively under Hapsburg, Ottoman or Wallachian rule, while remaining an autonomous province.
Romania's post WWII history as a communist-block nation is more widely known, primarily due to the excesses of the former dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. In December 1989 a national uprising lead to his overthrow. The 1991 Constitution established Romania as a republic with a multiparty system, market economy and individual rights of free speech, religion and private ownership.
