History
Ancient Romania was inhabited by Thracian tribes. In the first century BC, Greece established the state of Dacia there to counter the threat from Rome. Dacia fell to Rome in 106 AD, becoming a province of the Roman Empire. Faced with Goth attacks in 271 AD, Emperor Aurelian decided to withdraw the Roman legions south of the Danube, but the Romanised Vlach peasants remained in Dacia, forming a Romanian people. By the 10th century, small Romanian states emerged, and their consolidation led to the formation of the principalities of Moldavia, Wallachia and Transylvania. From the 10th century the Magyars spread into Transylvania and by the 13th century it was an autonomous principality under the Hungarian crown. In the 14th century Hungarian forces tried unsuccessfully to capture Wallachia and Moldavia. After 1848 Transylvania fell under the direct rule of Austria-Hungary from Budapest, and ruthless Magyarisation followed. In 1859 Alexandru Ioan Cuza was elected to the thrones of Moldavia and Wallachia, creating a national state, which was named Romania in 1862. Carol I succeeded him in 1866, and in 1877 Dobruja became part of Romania. Romania was declared a kingdom in 1881, with Carol I as king. He died at the start of WWI and was succeeded by his nephew Ferdinand I who, in 1916, entered the war on the side of the Triple Entente. His objective was to liberate Transylvania from Austria-Hungary. In 1918, Bessarabia, Bucovina and Transylvania became part of Romania.

BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... ROMANIA An ancient province of Rome (hence its name), the region of Romania was conquered by a succession of invaders: Bulgars, Mongols, and Ottomans. Long one of Europe's poorest and least developed countries, it was only in 1878 that independence was achieved. The 20th century was marked by turmoil including the Balkan Wars and the pro-Hitler government during World War II. After the Soviets 'liberated' Romania in 1944, the country became what has been termed a virtual colony of the USSR. In fact, the Soviet army did not leave the country until 14 years later. In 1965, Nicolae Ceausescu assumed power, pursuing repressive policies and poorly-developed economic strategies that left Romania in terrible straits. In 1989, Romania plunged in the throes of violent change from communism to a nascent democracy and the years since have been witness to continued instability, both economic and, sometimes, political.

In the Netherlands, they number about 4,500. The gypsies emigrated from northwestern India a thousand years ago. Their language, Romani, is related to Sanskrit. After a period in Persia (present-day Iran), they migrated to Europe during the 13 th and 14 th centuries. There are a variety of groups among the estimated 5 to 14 million gypsies in the world. The Roma, who number about 5 million, are spread across Eastern and Central Europe. Because of their high birthrates, the Roma are the fastest growing ethnic group in the region. According to some estimates, the Roma community has grown by 35 % over the past 15 years. In some countries, like Hungary, they are the largest ethnic minority. "Gypsy" is considered a derogatory term by most Roma and Sinti. The Roma refer to themselves as "Roma" or "Rom". They speak a variety of dialects of Romani (also spelt Romany) which are mutually intelligible.

BIOPOLICY IN ROMANIA: HISTORY AND PRESENT STATE
    Dr. Pia Elena Mihnea

Romania Bio-policy, as any other human attitude, is based upon knowledge, tradition and the level of education. It is a way to tap the philosophy of existence itself. The attitude regarding nature is not necessarily related to the degree of social development. Since long ago, negligence has been a peculiarity of countries with a high level of socio-economic status and equally peculiar to poor or undeveloped ones. When we are talking about bio-policy we want to designate people's behaviour during their struggle to develop agriculture and industry, when they want to use resources or enjoy natural landscapes. Sciences, especially branches of biology, had, and still have, the duty to educate and make humanity aware that the Earth, with all it contains, does not belong to us. It was only borrowed from future generations, and we have to return it. Bio-policy in Romania, with regard to one of its most important components, ecology, has a very old history going hand-in-hand with the process of the evolutionary theory of development in the world. One man who implemented Braun-Blanquet's concepts and methodology, contributing to the extension of evolutionary theory towards the understanding of the interrelations existing between plants and soil was Borza (1924). Simultaneously, a great number of zoologists began to study the dependencies of animals on the environment. Their results contributed not only to the completion of the evolutionary theory, but also to the development of new branches such as autecology, synecology, etc.

    History
    History to 1881
Romania occupies, roughly, ancient Dacia , which was a Roman province in the 2d and 3d cent. A.D. The ethnic character of modern Romania seems to have been formed in the Roman period; Christianity was introduced at that time as well. After the Romans left the region, the area was overrun successively by the Goths, the Huns, the Avars, the Bulgars, and the Magyars. Michael the Brave of Walachia defied both the Ottoman sultan and the Holy Roman emperor and at the time of his death (1601) controlled Moldavia, Walachia, and Transylvania. However, Michael's empire soon fell apart. An ill-fated alliance (1711) of the princes of Moldavia and Walachia with Peter I of Russia led to Turkish domination of Romania. Until 1821 the Turkish sultans appointed governors, or hospodars, usually chosen from among the Phanariots (see under Phanar ), Greek residents of Constantinople. The governors and their subordinates reduced the Romanian people (except for a few great landlords, the boyars) to a group of nomadic shepherds and poor, enserfed peasants.

History In the sixties Romania was an attractive country for tourists, with a lot of attractions and possibilities. But later on the country slowly closed their borders and in the eighties Ceasescu became a rough dictator. After the revolution in 1989 the borders opened again and the help organizations came in and found a demolished country. Since that time a lot has changed. Nevertheless, on some places, there are still broken families with a lack of food, cloth and housing. Before the foundation got the name Pace Romania a lot of food and cloth transports where organized. In the beginning the transport was focussed on Galati. A city nearby Russia where a Dutch nurse worked with aids children. Food, children clothes and toys where sent. Also the houses of the children where painted with nice colorful colors. In Timosoara, which is nearby the Hungarian border a big house with extra rooms for gatherings were build. A Romanian family that followed a Bible school in the Netherlands is living in this house. Next to the living the house is also used for gatherings of little groups for bible studies. Via Timosoara, contact was made with a village called Buturugeni, 30 km under Bukarest. In the first contact a church was filled with wooden banks from Holland. Pace Romania was founded in June 1995. To support the activities following the Romanian law the foundation “Pace Romania – Buturugeni” was founded in 1998. All daily activities are covered by this new foundation. The board of the foundation consist out of Dutch and Romanian members. On the moment the foundation has six paid employees working in Buturugeni. The goal of the foundation is totally focussed on spreading the Gospel and They want to be depended on God’s will. Next to this the foundation understands that brining food, material and spiritual lecture is not enough. They want to give the people their own fishing tools, instead of fish so that they can catch their own fish (in spiritual sence).
