    YACHAY WASI A PERMANENT FORUM ON INDIGENOUS ISSUES AT THE UNITED NATIONS The second session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues is scheduled to take place from 12 thru 23 May 2003 at UN Hqrs in New York City. In another resolution, an exceptional three-day pre-sessional meeting of the members of the Forum was approved from 7 to 9 May 2003. On 18 December 2002, the United Nations General Assembly approved without a vote a Secretariat in New York City for the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. The Secretariat will be part of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and will have 3 positions for 2003: a Director, a Programme Officer and a General Staff. The 3 remaining positions will be funded in a later year. As 3 months only remain until this Second Session, a temporary Secretariat is established: Elsa Stamatopoulou, currently Deputy to the Director in the NY Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, is Acting Chief, Secretariat for the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, DESA. John Scott, OHCHR in Geneva, is also assigned to this temporary body. Permanent positions will be filled at a later date.

    10 December 2001 WCC Special Fund to Combat Racism grants
    To mark Human Rights Day on Monday 10 December, the World Council of Churches (WCC) has announced grants totalling US$ 70,000 from its Special Fund to Combat Racism to ten anti-racism projects around the world. The grants recognize three categories of particular concern: anti-racism work, support to women suffering under racism, and the situation of Indigenous Peoples. Special Fund grants over the past 30 years have gone to groups in 50 countries and have totalled over US$12 million. The complete list of recipients of this year's grants is: 1. Action for World Development, AUSTRALIA, US$ 7,000
    This Aboriginal People's organization raises awareness on racism and works for the rights of the Indigenous Peoples of Australia. It also promotes ecumenical action for justice. 2. Koori Anglican Fellowship, AUSTRALIA, US$ 7,000
    The Fellowship addresses past and present issues of denial, destruction and denigration of incarcerated Indigenous women, as well as reclaiming ancestral values.

    presented the human rights violations: "Desecration of Indigenous Burial
    Sites and Display of Indigenous Remains" to the Human Rights caucus of
    the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development CSD-7 meeting
    currently at United Nations Headquarters in NYC.
    The statement below was given and, as one of the topics of CSD-7 is
    Sustainable Tourism, the issue of "display of Indigenous remains" was
    approved by the Caucus to be included in its report at the conclusion of CSD-7 on April 30. It is a timely decision as the exhibit in Florida closes tomorrow.
