BIOGRAPHIES AND CRITICISMS CLASSIFICATION
Architects Artists Criticism of Individual Works General Biography Procedures ... Special Categories POLICY BACKGROUND Prior to the adoption of Dewey 19, the UIUC Library used a variety of special numbers for both individual and collective biographies, in addition to "B.", which was assigned for individual biography, and 921-928 for collective biography. Many of the previously used numbers for both individual and collective biographies have been discontinued in Dewey. In accordance with the policy that was established at the adoption of Dewey 19, "B." is no longer used in establishing new biography numbers. Under 920, only 920.001-920.09 and 920.7 are used for very general collective biographies. Most new (unestablished) individual biographies , as well as other, subject specific collective biographies, are currently classed by subject , adding either standard subdivision (for individual biography), or (for collective biography) as appropriate from Table 1.

Joyce Carol Oates: Biography This biography was written by Angella Chellis, April 2000, student in En 272 (Modern American Short Fiction), New Hampshire Technical Institute, Concord, New Hampshire Joyce Carol Oates is one of the leading contributors today of modern fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Through her often disturbing images of modern life she brings a human quality to all of her characters, showing the struggle to balance one's inner turmoil with the strife of everyday life. Joyce grew up in Lockport, New York, the daughter of a tool and die maker. She was born in 1938 at a time when the country was at the lowest point in history. It was the near end of a decade of severe depression. Joyce was a self- proclaimed serious child with little in common with the other children with whom she attended class. Her parents saw from early on that their child had received a "rare gift" (Jean, 1987). "She was always so hard working, a perfectionist at everything," Carolina Oates, Joyce's mother, recalled (Gale research, 1981). Often Joyce is asked about her childhood by readers and critics alike. This is due in part to her characters and plots in her novels as well as in her short fiction. Nowadays the vast majority of the public labels writers who have disturbing images dealing with traumatic experiences in their works as a connection to a great traumatic experience in their own lives. Joyce answered that question as follows when interviewed on September, 25 1987 by C.A. "We seem to have inherited… the assumption that the grounds of discontent, anger, rage, despair - unhappiness' in general - reside within the sufferer rather than outside of him." Joyce finds the harsh reality of the real world more ugly and grotesque than the horrors that plague the pages of her work. "Uplifting endings and resolutely cheery world views are appropriate to television commercials but insulting elsewhere. It is not only wicked to pretend otherwise, it is futile" (Jean, 1987).

Getting Started
Finding biographical information on authors can be either very easy or frustratingly difficult. While much is written about the very famous, locating a biography on a less famous author can be challenging. Finding anything on the obscure or new writer can be as difficult as solving a murder mystery. Unless you absolutely know otherwise, the best initial strategy to take is to assume your author is famous enough to be found without too much difficulty. The Contemporary Authors series is an excellent place to start. As its name implies, this massive set of books mainly covers authors who wrote in the twentieth-century. The Dictionary of Literary Biography includes authors from many time periods. It covers the literatures of a wide selection of nations and regions.

DOMINIQUE MOCEANU: A GYMNASTICS SENSATION by Krista Quiner
Bradford December 1996; $12.95 U.S./$16.96 Canada softcover 191 pages; ISBN: 0-9643460-3-6
Very Highly Recommended
The title, DOMINIQUE MOCEANU: A GYMNASTICS SENSATION, and a dedication by the author, "To Dominique Moceanu, who brings joy to the sport she loves," fairly captures the spirit of this book. This book was printed after the '96 Atlanta Olympic games and includes full coverage of Moceanu's Olympic performances, some of which were disappointing and did not live up the the high expectations placed upon her. She did win a team gold, although the team competition was bittersweet when she sat down two consecutive vaults. The dedication may fool some readers into thinking this book glorifies Dominique, not mentioning anything that may be deemed negative, but author Quiner, has, as it states on the back cover, provided a "truthful and revealing biography," that provides a rare in-depth look at the life of Moceanu. The book provides a balanced, honest look into the life of this young athlete who was only 14 years old at the '96 Olympic Games. Quiner has provided excellent documentation, including 4 pages of footnotes and a 2 page glossary of gymnastic terms to help readers who might not have as much technical expertise as she does as a former competitive gymnast.
