Students in the integrated U.S. History/American Literature classes at New Technology High School in Napa, California have been writing haiku about events and concepts of the 1920's in America.
Combining haiku and U. S. history may seem pretty wierd. Actually there are good reasons to do it. Historical haiku are fun, they teach you about a form of poetry, and about at least one historical theme or topic. If you can distill an historical event into 17 syllables that evoke the essence of that event, or highlight someone's experience of that event, you've probably mastered knowledge of the event.
The students took topics and themes from the 1920's in the United States and wrote the following.
The Palmer Raids

62. The Roaring Twenties
The 1920s may have been the decade of the greatest social change in american history. Thetwenties were known as the the roaring twenties, the Jazz Age
http://www.nv.cc.va.us/home/nvsageh/Hist122/Part3/Twenties.htm
The Roaring Twenties
It was also a time of deep divisions: wets against drys, town against country, nativists versus foreigners, Catholic against Protestant, and included the Ku Klux Klan revival and an American sense of alienation from the rest of the world.
The decade began amidst the ashes of the Great War, blossomed into a riotous age of spending and profit making, cheap automobiles and new consumer products. Everybody seemed to be on a roll. Then in 1929 the Crash hit the stock market, and for many complicated reasons the Great Depression followed. The 1930s became a time of unimaginable economic hardship for millions of Americans. Thus the "roaring twenties" ended with the bleak prospect of lessened expectations and strange new challengesand for many the challenge was simply to stay alive.
Into the midst of the chaos of that Depression came the next imposing figure we will study: Franklin Delano Roosevelt. His New Deal program was the most ambitious legislative program ever taken by a President to that time, and while it did not really end the Depression, Roosevelt's New Deal changed the face of American government forever.

The Roaring Twenties
The decade was called the "Roaring '20s." Historians, journalists, and novelists are fascinated with the 1920s as the beginning of modern America a decade that helped set the tone for the rest of the century. An explosion of new inventions and technological breakthroughs transformed popular lifestyles. Shorter work weeks and increased wages led to a revolution in communications, transportation and recreation. Radio tied the nation together, and Hollywood gave it a common culture by cranking out 2,000 films a year. Hollywood movies and television make it look like one big dance party with a few gangsters thrown in for dramatic purposes. But the twenties also saw the Scopes trial, a resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan, new restrictions on immigration, and ongoing rural poverty.

The 1920s page is offline indefinitely. Thousands of youstudents, educators and othershave written and complemented this web site. I am proud of the recognition and awards it has received from national library, goverment, and educational institutions. A number of changes need to be made to the site's information, and the design and structure are in dire need of revamping. Also, the amount of time I've had to give to responding to various requests related to the site has been too overwhelming. Rather than be rude and ignore e-mailswhich I have been forced to do because of career and personal pressuresI've chosen to take the site down for the time being. I do not know when time will again permit me to improve, reactivate and maintain the site. If you are desperate for information from the site, you can probably find old copies of it through a google.com search and use the cache feature to access the content. I no longer can respond to any requests related to the site. Thanks again for everyone's support, compliments and input. I hope to be able to make this resource available again to the hundreds of thousands of children and teachers around the world who have benefited from it. Sincerely, Kevin
