Religious Freedom Restoration Act passed in Rhode Island RFRA Intro: Since the Supreme Court struck down the Religious Freedom Restoration Act last June, many states have introduced "mini-RFRA" legislation. Most bills are still pending-ask your legislators where YOUR state RFRA is!- but some states have pushed forward and enacted their versions of RFRA, notably Connecticut, Rhode Island and Florida. The Witches' Voice has posted the state RFRAs which are currently law and will update the list as more states pass this legislation.

91. Secondary And Other Schools - Consulate General Of Japan In Boston

http://www.boston.us.emb-japan.go.jp/secondary.htm
Secondary and Other Schools
Japanese language and culture studies are offered at secondary and other schools in all six of the New England states. Among them, in alphabetical order by state are:
Connecticut
Among the private schools in Connecticut to include Japanese in their curriculum are the Taft School in Watertown and the Kent School in Kent. Both are four-year high schools that offer four years of Japanese language instruction. Taft also has as an independent project for those students who have completed this course of study and a one-semester elective course in Japanese history, mainly for seniors.
Maine
K ennebunk High School offers an elective first-year Japanese language course, which meets once a day.
Massachusetts
A few public high schools in Massachusetts offer Japanese. Among them are the Boston Latin Academy with three years and the Muriel Snowden International School , also in Boston, with four years. As for private high schools, Thayer Academy in Braintree is an independent day school that has an agreement with the Hokkaido Board of Education. Every 18 months, Hokkaido sends a teacher of English from one of their schools; Thayer supplies this individual with room and board in return for teaching Japanese language and a survey of Japanese culture.
New Hampshire
Exeter Area High School, a public school in Exeter offers beginning, intermediate, and advanced Japanese language as well as an Asian social studies course. In addition to speaking skills, the first year language program covers hiragana and katakana; at the intermediate level, students learn about 200 kanji; in the advanced class, another 200 are covered. The school also has an extracurricular Japanese club that meets for monthly cultural activities and a Japanese animation club that meets weekly. Exeter's Japanese language instructor, Yuki Minami, sponsors a chapter of the Japanese National Honors Society at the school. In addition, there is a exchange program with an Okinawan high school; in 1998, 10 Okinawan students visited Exeter for three weeks in March and 13 Exeter students spent the summer in Okinawa

Oral Health Program
Welcome to the Oral Health Program home page. The goal of this web site is:
  • To provide a central site for oral health information in Rhode Island. To provide direction to other sources of oral health information.
This web site is divided into seven major sections: In Oral Health in America: A Report of the Surgeon General , former U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher has noted "…the mouth reflects general health and well-being." It is evident that poor oral health has a negative affect on an individual’s ability to grow, learn, and enjoy life to the fullest. The Oral Health Program of the Rhode Island Department of Health, working with community leaders, the legislature, and the private, the public, and the not-for-profit sectors, has a mission to improve the oral health of all Rhode Islanders. Thank you for joining our collective efforts to promote oral health and prevent oral disease in Rhode Island. A healthy smile can last a lifetime. For more information, please go to:

PUBLICATION: Washington Post
DATE: February 23, 2000
SECTION: Pg Extra; Pg. M03
BYLINE: Eugene L. Meyer
DATELINE: Washington, D.C.
ACTIVISTS, INDIVIDUALS, AND GROUPS MENTIONED: Shirley Oguh, secretary of the Avondale Citizens' Association The Washington Post reports that the loud boom that precedes the Metro into the tunnel between the Fort Totten and West Hyattsville stations is a major noise concern for residents in the Avondale community. The article said that residents complain that the noise begins in early morning and continues until night, even setting off car alarms. According to the article, the problem has continued for five years, and the vibration from the booms is so intense that figurines on furniture surfaces and pictures on the wall shake. The article said that residents are losing sleep because of the noise, and have considered moving. The article went on to say that Shirley Oguh, secretary of the Avondale Citizens' Association, and its members wrote to Metro General Manager explaining their concern, mailing copies to state and county legislators. The article said that Metro inspectors apparently have heard the complaints and become more attentive than they have been in the past they've talked to residents and listened to the booms.
