Inside Energy, November 22, 1999 Owens Corning and the Department of Energy (DOE) announced a campaign to assist U.S. public schools in becoming more energy efficient. Roughly $1.5 billion of the $6 billion U.S. schools spend each year is wasted due to poor insulating systems, ventilating, cooling, lighting, and heating. A four-day "Saving Energy Starts With Me" campaign will be included in the campaign, which features a home energy quiz and hands-on experiments. In addition, during the announcement, twelve "Energy Smart School Ambassadors" released an "Energy Smart Schools Proclamation." The Ambassadors were student winners of a "Saving Energy Starts With Me" contest sponsored by Owens Corning and DOE. An Energy Smart Schools Proclamation signed by students, parents, and other interested parties will be forwarded to local school superintendents in April 2000, in conjunction with Earth Day 2000. The winning essays and the interactive proclamation are available at:

Author: Michael Brosnan
- The schools in Providence, Rhode Island, like those in most large and midsize cities, suffer alarming drop-out rates. In 1989, Urban Collaborative, an independent, public middle school for teenagers at risk of dropping out, was founded. The results have been phenomenal. More than 80 percent of the students go on to graduate from high school. Michael Brosnan uses the stories of the director, students, and teachers to explain how and why this school succeeds where so many have failed. http://www.amazon.com [30] Hits Comments about this link? Introduction Introduction
The Town of Burrillville, established in 1730, was incorporated in 1806. The first European settlers arrived in Burrillville in the late 17TH Century. For many decades after, and throughout the 18TH Century, farming was the predominant occupation of the inhabitants, who cleared most of the town's forested lands for their fields and pastures. Burrillville's natural features, landscape, and waterways have played an important role in the town's development. During the first half of the 19TH Century, the town's larger waterways - the Chepachet, Clear, Pascoag, and Branch River system were harnessed to power the textile mills, which formed the nuclei for more than a dozen hamlets and villages. The textile industry remained active into the 20TH Century, but gradually the mills ceased operating; many were torn down or destroyed by fire and never rebuilt. Improved transportation facilities, and a changing economy have resulted in most of the townspeople working outside of the town. As a result, it has become a bedroom community. The former mill villages are no longer dependent on the mill fortunes, and most of these settlements survive as lovely and pleasant residential communities.
