Part of the Annenberg Institute's mission is to effect educational change in Rhode Island and in the city of Providence as well as nationally. These are some of the projects the Institute has undertaken in its commitment to local action:
GUBERNATORIAL TRANSITION: AISR Staff Serve on RI Education Team
Annenberg Institute Executive Director Warren Simmons was named to Rhode Island Governor Don Carcieri's Education Transition Team. He was serving on the Subcommittee on School Governance, which was asked to define systemic goals that "good governance" should support and to identify effective models of K-16 governance.
Director of Opportunity and Accountability Dennie Palmer Wolf participated in the Policy Subcommittee, which has alerted the new governor to the most pressing issues of public education in Rhode Island, particularly issues that will come up early in his administration: compliance with NCLB and diversifying the kinds of schools available to the state's residents.

Programs for the General Public
The Rhode Island Space Grant Program provides a number of science programs for the general public. The "Space Grant Speakers Bureau" sends working scientists to clubs and organizations, such as Senior Citizen groups and Amateur Astronomy clubs, throughout the state that request speakers on science topics. Several programs have been developed in association with the Roger Williams Park Zoo and Cormack Planetarium . The Space Grant Program has organized and supplied speakers for the Zoo Docent Program, the Zoo Winter Lecture Series Program, and two special Zoo programs associated with the Dinomation Exhibit. In addition, Space Grant has supplied speakers for the Brown Institute of Secondary Education Zooscope Program. Request a speaker. In the past, RI Space Grant has funded an undergraduate Scholar who then works with the Cormack Planetarium at Roger Williams Park in an outreach capacity. This allows the Planetarium to have increased outreach program capacity without the necessity of funding additional staff. Since 1992, many public programs have been organized jointly by Space Grant and the Brown Learning Community ("continuing education" at Brown) each year. Past programs have included parent-child science workshops on space-related topics, short-courses for adults and for children, an "after-school science film series", an all-nighter "Science Teachers Overnight" at Ladd Observatory, and sessions in the popular BLC "Brown Society of Junior Scientists" and "Simply Science" programs.

KENNEDY TOUTS FEDERAL INITIATIVES
TO MODERNIZE PUBLIC SCHOOLS
PAWTUCKET Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy (D-RI), visiting Potter-Burns Elementary School today as part of the U.S. Department of Education's "National School Modernization Day" program, outlined initiatives he is supporting in Congress to provide students with facilities more conducive to learning, greater access to technology, better-trained teachers and smaller Grades 1-3 classrooms.
"There is nothing more important to this nation's future than making sure our students have access to a quality public education," said Kennedy. "But with the current state of our educational infrastructure, that access is being denied and the excitement everyone should feel with the opening of the school year is undermined without a new progressive education agenda."
Kennedy is a co-sponsor of the Partnership To Rebuild America's Schools Act (HR 1104) which would appropriate $5 billion to make funding available in the form of grants to state and local education agencies.
Another initiative, which Kennedy also supports, provides federal tax credits to cover the interest on a total of $19.4 billion in school modernization bonds over the next two years. Of that amount, Rhode Island would receive more than $72 million in added funds.

Admission Requirements
The Community College of Rhode Island has a policy of open admissions which gives all Rhode Island residents an opportunity for education beyond the high school level. Students who plan to attend CCRI with the intention of transferring to a four-year college or university can best prepare themselves in high school by taking college preparatory courses and obtaining a solid foundation in the humanities, language, arts, mathematics and sciences. If a prospective applicant has reached the age of sixteen years, the compulsory school attendance age in Rhode Island, and has earned a high school diploma or its equivalent, the applicant may be admitted to a certificate or degree program at the Community College of Rhode Island. The equivalent of a high school diploma is defined as follows: demonstrated ability in passing all tests required to earn a certificate of high school equivalency (GED) by the Rhode Island Department of Education. Although a high school diploma or its equivalent is not a general admission requirement of the College provided the student is 18 years of age, it should be noted that intercollegiate athletic participants, applicants for financial aid or veterans' benefits and in some cases students applying for transfer to some senior colleges must show evidence of a high school diploma or its equivalent.
