Catholic Schools Enrollment Experiences
Small Decline for the First Time in a Decade
For the 2002-03 school year, opening of year enrollment dipped by 1.6% to 18,600 students, grades Pre-K to 12. The decrease occurred among the 49 Catholic elementary schools, while the nine Catholic high schools saw enrollment increase by 1%. From 1991 to 2001, enrollment in Rhode Island's 58 elementary and secondary schools had increased by 19%. The average size of a Catholic elementary school this year is 275, while the populations of the ten Catholic high schools range from 90 to 1,300. Ten percent of Rhode Island's school children attend a Catholic school. [For tuition and tuition assistance information, go to the "Did You Know" page.] Schools Seek Regional Accreditation
As a result of the 1994 report on Rhode Island's Catholic schools, "Lighting New Fires," all Catholic elementary and secondary schools in the Diocese are required to seek accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). To date, 47 of the 49 Catholic elementary schools have achieved regional accreditation, and seven of the nine Catholic high schools have also been accredited. The remaining schools are scheduled for accreditation visits over the next year. All schools are expected to be fully accredited by the end of the 2002-03 school year.

Strengthening Public Education in America. 11. NEARI supports the use of publiceducation funds exclusively for rhode island's public schools (prek-12).
http://www.neari.org/polad/recommend.stm
Candidate Recommendations Dear NEARI Member, For the next several months, the NEARI Political Action Committee for Education (NEARI-PACE) will be deeply involved in the political candidate process. Below are the NEARI-PACE election procedures and the questionnaire that each candidate seeking an interview with the NEARI-PACE Steering Committee must complete prior to an interview. The Steering Committee will be putting in long hours interviewing, discussing and deciding on candidates to recommend to you. It is a very thoughtful process, and one that the Committee takes very seriously. When the process is completed, prior to Election Day, we ask that you consider the candidates that are recommended. NEARI-PACE
ELECTION PROCEDURES
1. A letter is sent to the chairperson of all recognized political parties before the primary. 3. A questionnaire is sent to primary candidates in races that are important to NEARI-PACE. 4. If one candidate in a specific race requests a questionnaire, all other candidates in that race are sent the same information.
NEARI-PACE QUESTIONS
Candidates for Rhode Island State Offices and/or Rhode Island General Assembly The primary purpose of NEARI-PACE is to support candidates for public office who have endorsed and shown a commitment to the ideals and resolutions of NEARI. The following statements have not been prioritized in any manner. Each one represents a position of NEARI.

School-based curriculum reflects statewide math, language arts and science frameworks and Certificate of Initial Mastery learning goals. Earliest exposure to careers and the world of work occur through story telling, interviews with family members, classroom visits from community-based employers, male and female role models and site visits to local businesses and industries. School-based enterprises can be created to simulate work experiences. Grade 4-6: Career awareness During these grades, broad exposure to career majors occurs. Schools introduce two of the identified career majors at each grade level through connections to the curriculum. Students visit businesses and industries related to those broad career fields. By grade six, students are able to demonstrate a beginning understanding of the skills, attitudes and knowledge required in the workplace.
