National Geographic Society Grant will send teachers to conservation hotspots in Brazil and U.S, allowing students to apply global lessons locally.
MAYNARD. MA 24 teachers from six states - California, Florida, Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, and Washington – will venture to the vast wetlands of Brazil’s Pantanal and to the Skagit River watershed of Washington this summer to participate in conservation research projects as part of a $75,000 grant award Earthwatch Institute has received from National Geographic Society Education Foundation (NGSEF). Earthwatch’s "Strengthening Geography in Schools through Conservation Field Work and Collaboration" is strategically designed to address the lack of geographic knowledge among students in the United States.
"This innovative project will help students become stewards of our natural and cultural resources,” said Barbara Chow, Executive Director of the Society’s Education Foundation. “Giving these teachers a first-hand look at the realities of conservation issues will enliven their teaching.”
The project will send 24 geography/science educators to conservation projects in the Pantanal wetlands in Brazil and the Skagit River watershed in Washington State. Through subsequent workshops and websites, these teachers expect to reach another 2,400 K-12 teachers and 240,000 students with geography and conservation lessons linking field research to local environmental issues.

It was then I realized that rhode island was the only major hindrance in my otherwisepleasant life. rhode island bothers me for a multitude of reasons.
http://www2.chappaqua.k12.ny.us/tribune/5-01rhodeisland.htm
Quandt's Quolumn Neither a road nor an island Gillian Quandt
Columnist Being an irritable individual, I tried to draw up a list of my greatest grievances. After the first obvious grievance, I was hard pressed to find others. It was then I realized that Rhode Island was the only major hindrance in my otherwise pleasant life. I began to dream, “What if Rhode Island didn’t exist...” and I was carried away on a euphoric wave until I remembered it was only a fantasy.
Rhode Island bothers me for a multitude of reasons. Foremostly is the fact that Rhode Island, under no circumstance, deserves to be a state. It has a population of barely one million, which sounds a lot more like a large city than a state to me. Some states, like Wyoming, make up for their meager populations with large areas, but Rhode Island cannot even boast that. The state holds only 1,214 square miles and is 48 miles at its widest point. Add a few Chappaqua’s together and you get the area of Rhode Island. Are we our own state?
Adding to the futility of the state is the joke with always accompanies- “Rhode Island — neither a road nor an island - Discuss!” First, Rhode is not spelled “road,” so the joke is completely merit-less. Second, the official name of Rhode Island is actually State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations; the state is not claiming to be a island. I’m definitely not trying to defend the state, but I hate that joke and besides, there are so many more things to make fun of in Rhode Island. For example, its nickname is “Little Rhody,” and the state bird is a rooster. Yes, a rooster.

Rhode Island – A State Unit Study This mini unit on RHODE ISLAND uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academic subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study RHODE ISLAND. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual child’s needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about RHODE ISLAND and enjoyable for all who are participating. Rhode Island’s State Flag Placed on a white field is a circle of thirteen gold stars representing the first thirteen states. The stars surround a gold ship's anchor. The states motto " Hope" is on a blue ribbon below the anchor. Create a State “Infodesk”: Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect. Print a blank map of the state, or draw one on tag board, that you can place on the bulletin board. As you study the political and physical features of the state, have the children fill in the name of the state capital, large cities, and major geographical features. Color the map using different shades for varying elevations.

HUMMINGBIRD GEOGRAPHY ACTIVITIES
For many students, geography is a class in memorization: all the state capitols, the major rivers of the world, the main export of each of the countries of Africa. Although such facts are important for students to know, activity-based learning such as those in Operation RubyThroat may be more effective in teaching, learning, and retention than mere memorization. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) is an ideal topic for discussion in geography because it breeds, migrates through, or spends the winter in all the countries of North and Central America. While learning about the natural history of this diminutive bird, students can also learn a great deal about geography. We hope you'll want to share your original hummingbird geography work through publication on Operation RubyThroat . If so, contact
