Letter from North Yorkshire, England
April

http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/Harbor/1771/
February 8, 2001 Dear fellow TC's, Greetings from Scarborough, North Yorkshire in England. My Fulbright Teacher Exchange is almost halfway through and I can't believe it!!! I have been learning so much about England and schools here but even more so about America, American schools and my teaching. The year has proved interesting with the biggest floods in a few decades and high fuel prices that led to blockades and a near stand still of the country.
As some of you know, it all started with the Alliance's Advanced Institute to London in the summer of 1999. I just couldn't get enough of England and found a way to come back for the whole year. Although, our two countries seem very similar, there are so many differences including language. When I come back everything will be "brilliant", "sorted" and "keen". I will put trash in the bin, open the bonnet of my car, and pop 'round the chemist for my prescriptions. It all might seem superficial but it is representative of underlying cultural differences.
North York Moors National Park
Coast line of North Yorkshire I am spending the year in Scarborough which is a town in Northeast England on the coast of the North Sea and part of the North York Moors National Park . Larger cities nearby included York and Leeds. At one time Scarborough relied heavily on the fishing industry but now is dependent on tourism and service industry. It is quite a lovely town with a ruined castle and beaches. The Moors are a wonderful place to go walking and they feel quite romantic like Wuthering Heights. On the outlying areas of town are farms and small villages. Everywhere there are sheep. When I first arrived I spent a day in the nearby village of Pickering. I took the North York Moors steam railway through the park and some other villages. As I sat and ate my lunch, the local farmers herded their sheep around me. Yes.. sheep do really stop traffic here. These small villages retain their rural character and sense of a close knit community.

18. Strategy For Rhode Island Research
No. 1, March 2000 531. Up-to-date information on web sites, bibliography.Familiarize yourself with rhode island geography.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~rigenweb/ri-research.html
A CHALLENGE OF DIVERSITY: DEVELOPING
A PRACTICAL STRATEGY FOR RHODE ISLAND RESEARCH
Jane Fletcher Fiske, F.A.S.G. Free-thinking and independent from the start, Rhode Islanders generated an incredible degree of diversity in their society and in their records. A researcher can quickly get lost in the multiplicity of available sources, which nonetheless represents a real treasure-trove of possibilities. The key to success lies in doing one's homework and having a plan of attack.
  • Define the problem and narrow the search:
Fix the relevant time(s) and place(s) as exactly as you can.
Analyze the records you have that indicate R.I. origin. If you have no specific information, what are the clues? Census? Family tradition? Church affiliation? (Remember to make note of the neighbors.)
  • Read an overview article or book on Rhode Island research. These include:
Jane Fletcher Fiske, "Genealogical Research in Rhode Island," in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register , 136 [July 1982]: 173-219; reprinted as a chapter in Genealogical Research in New England , Ralph J. Crandall, ed. (1983). Best for overview, but some addresses are out of date.

Teachers Teach Live from Field Research Sites
Eleven Rhode Island teachers are awarded Earthwatch fellowships to share field experience with students via the Internet.
Eleven adventurous teachers from Rhode Island are gearing up or just returning from expeditions. Their mission to capture cougars and armadillos, track dolphins and manatees, tag sea turtles, or converse with famous chimps. Teachers will "virtually" take their students with them posting journals, photos, assignments, while their students ask questions online, follow daily events from classroom computers.
While teachers have participated in Earthwatch's summer professional development opportunities for decades, the concept of teachers undertaking these explorations during the school year is a new model being developed collaboratively by Earthwatch Institute, an international non profit supporting scientific research worldwide; the Rhode Island Foundation, the state's largest charitable trust; and the teachers and their school systems.
The Rhode Island teachers are:
"Teachers are very important to Earthwatch's mission of conserving the world's natural and cultural resources" said Susan Rauchwerk, Earthwatch's Director of Education. "When a teacher has this type of experience doing guided research with Earthwatch scientists" the effect is multiplied hundred times in the classroom. The impact is even more powerful when students can see their own teacher modeling "live" science, and also be able to ask questions in real time while the field research is going on."

20. Geography Of Rhode Island
Geography. The location of this state couldn't be more perfect. Rhode Islandis situated on the Atlantic Coast, and a beautiful view it is!
http://svweb.nsd.org/nakastudpag/nineteenri/GeographyofRI.html
Geography The location of this state couldn't be more perfect. Rhode Island is situated on the Atlantic Coast, and a beautiful view it is! If you're worried about getting a place on the coast, don't be. Jutting out from the center of Rhode Island is Narragansett Bay, almost splitting the state in two. In the bay, there are 36 wonderful islands harboring the same beautiful view. Not to mention, the water provides easy access to get from one Coast State to another. Also, there are plenty of tourist activities on the islands, and can easily be reached by a peaceful ride on the ferry. Have you ever watched the sunset over the horizon as it's fiery orange rays reflect off of the water? If you come here, you can do that every single day. This state has so much water, it's official name is the ocean state.
Not into water? Don't worry, Rhode Island has more than just water to show you. It is also covered in brilliant emerald green forests. If you prefer the great outdoors, then come to the inland where it's filled with forests. If you enjoy bird watching, you hit the jackpot! There's plenty of wildlife here to keep you company! You wouldn't need to have an alarm clock because the friendly chirping of a bird will wake you up and you can start your day with it's pleasant tune.
Don't like trees either? Rhode Island still has more to offer! If you settle in the Western area of Rhode Island, you can be in the rolling hills that stretch all the way to the horizon. Or if you want to keep yourself on level ground, the plains in the east are just what you're looking for. Just about whatever your looking for, this state can offer it to you! If you get tired of one landscape, you can drop in for a visit on one of the others. After all, this state is just over 1,000 square miles and it's quick and easy to get from one place to another.
