A Guide to Writing Academic Essays in
Religious Studies
Prepared by Scott G. Brown
15 September 1997; revised 10 August 1999; 17 October 2000; and 2 February 2002 The 1999 version of this guide was published in the Council of Societies for the Study of Religion Bulletin 28 (1999): 69-76, and its contents are reproduced with permission of the CSSR. The present version has benefited from the generous feedback of colleagues working in the Department for the Study of Religion at the University of Toronto and other university religious studies departments. Feel free to e-mail the author with suggestions for improvement. This guide attempts to explain various aspects of essay writing that undergraduate students are rarely specifically taught. The academic format described here is best suited to research essays involving the use of primary and secondary sources (e.g., ancient or modern texts and the books and articles scholars have written on these texts) and is not, therefore, the proper format for every religion essay you will write. Moreover, though the recommendations offered in this discussion are fairly standard, it must not be forgotten that there will always be differing opinions, especially on points of style. Thus it is best to ask your instructor whether this guide is suitable for the course you are taking and to comply with whatever recommendations or revisions she or he wishes to make. Home Due to the horrific attacks against the people of the world and the misunderstanding of the Islamic faith and people, I have attached this special section. Please be advise that some of these sites may be offensive to some people and too intense for young children. All of the sites I have listed give some insight into a people and religion that has long been misunderstood and neglected. I am a Christian. I believe in God and the overall goodness of mankind. Some people evidently do not. In researching these sites, I have learned a lot. Hopefully, even the sites that may rub you the wrong way, can serve to educate. After all, THIS IS AMERICA , a place where everyone has the freedom of speech.

... People Religious Studies Religion is ubiquitous in human culture. Religious behaviours aspire to goals far out of the ordinary reach of human action. Religions touch lives and worlds before and beyond the present and far beyond the tangible cosmos into the reaches of the unknown. For thousands of years humans have lived within worldviews and behaviours framed by these fantastic horizons. Religion's vast purview vastly overmatched natural perceptions until the twentieth century (1925-29), when Edwin Hubble (1889-1953) recognized the outline of an island universe in the hitherto unrecognizable realm of deep space. In Hubble's humbling vision, what had been an emblem of divine transcendence materialized as the fleeting form of one of a billion galaxies careening out in an exploding universe. Even so, compared to the venerable traditions of religion the grip of science on the collective human imagination remains infantile and feeble. Religion's heaven, not Hubble's expanding universe, still tantalizes the human imagination at the beginning of its so-called third millennium (the global calendar's Christian origin reflects the same economic interest). This ongoing imaginative potential makes religion an unparalleled force (for better and for worse) in the ongoing evolution of human culture and society. Understanding this force and the human nature that religion both expresses and examines remains humanity's most critical task.

    Introduction
This page lists a number of sites on the Internet that are useful for the study of Judaism and Christianity. The list is necessarily partial, provisional, and even parochial. A casual glance will show how Penn-centered it is. It is amazing that this much relevant information already exists on the Internet. Some of this material is brilliant, and much of it is useful. One should realize, however, that most original research Robert Harris had made available some useful guidelines for " Evaluating Internet Research Sources
