Snake! - A Primer on Ohio’s Snakes, How to I.D. Them, How to Deal With Them ~ by Rebecca Stillwell Fear is a typical first response exhibited by many people encountering a snake in the wild, or in the yard, shed, basement, etc. The next response is often to reach for a shovel with which to quickly dispatch the presumably poisonous, evil creature. Knowing a little about Ohio’s native snakes is the first step to eliminating (or at least, reducing) this fearful, knee-jerk reaction, and can help us appreciate their role as beneficial participants in Nature’s “grand scheme.” In Ohio we enjoy about 30 native snake species, and of these only three are venomous. These are the northern copperhead ( Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen ), the timber rattlesnake ( Crotalus horridus horridus ), and the eastern massasauga rattlesnake ( Sistrurus catenatus catenatus ). All three of these snakes belong to the group of snakes known as pit vipers, so named because of the heat-sensing organ that appears as a small hole between each eye and nostril. These sensory pits help the snakes locate small, warm-blooded prey (such as moles, chipmunks, rats, mice, etc.) at night or while foraging in low-light areas, such as under logs and rocky outcroppings. It is unwise, however, to search for the presence of sensory pits to determine whether a snake is venomous. If you can actually see the pit, you are certainly standing

Number to call if you are "bitten" Arizona has 17 species of rattlers; more than any other state. The Western Diamond Back and Mojave are probably the most common species found in Arizona where rattler specimens close to eight feet used to be encountered. Unfortunately, due to habitat destruction and slaughter, specimens five feet or more in length are now a rarity. Rattlesnakes are believed to be highly evolved from a moccasin-like ancestor. Ready to rattle Most rattlesnakes mate in April or May, and are born in late August through October. Rattlesnakes bear living young that develop from eggs within the female's body. The mother offers no care or protection and babies are capable of biting from the moment they are born. They are born with one segment of their rattles and grow one new section each time they shed their skin. The number of rattles cannot be used to determine a rattler's age. Can live 25 years Young rattlesnakes are not able to deliver as much venom as a mature snake. In many instances, a young rattler deliver "dry bites" with no venom imparted. Many young snakes fall prey to predators such as

Neta's Snake Tale
Toyahvale, Texas
Neta Rhyne
Our oldest daughter started college in 1989 and since employment opportunities are few and far between in remote west Texas I began looking for ways to make money. One evening while reading the local paper I came across a want ad which read "Wanted Live Rattlesnakes" will pay $6.00 per pound. Now catching live rattlesnakes was not on my list of things I wanted to do but considering how many rattlers there are in these parts I figured this could be a profitable enterprise.
Darrel made me an 8-foot long snake stick out of PVC pipe with a cable through it and a noose on the end. The concept was I could catch the rattlers by placing the loop around the snake's head then pulling the noose tight.

SNAKES CHARMING SMALL ANIMALS
By S. C. Turnbo
It is strange how serpents are endowed with the power of charming small animals such as rabbits and squirrels. All I know about it is what is told me by those who have seen such things. Whether the reptile overcomes the little animal through fear or fascination, I am not prepared to say, but according to the evidence as given by others the attraction the snake exerts over the animal seems irresistable and it is compelled to yield to the influence of its enemy. It seems useless to give a further description of this kind than we have stated elsewhere in these sketches to prove this charming process that reptiles possess and is not worth while to add further testimony on this subject. But, however, we will give the following accounts to add strength to that already given.

The Truth About Snakes By Mark Warren
Tales and suspenseful stories about North Georgia's reptiles have been perpetuated for scores of years. Many Georgia residents, however, might be surprised by some of the actual facts concerning snakes.
When I was nine years of age, I heard a story from a trusted adult who had witnessed a snake beating her grandfather with its tail. Each lash mark reportedly caused the elderly man's flesh to rot. My adult friend was dead serious, but I remained a cautious audience.
Once someone tells a snake story, usually another will follow. Everybody has one. After the "whip-snake" story, another woman related to me the strange incident in which a snake bit its own tail in order to form a circle. At this point, the woman explained the snake managed to raise itself up like a wheel to roll down a hill. But that's not the best part. . . The snake, she said, was chasing her. Naturally, her advice to me was, "Always run uphill from a snake."
How can a creature that crawls along the ground without arms and legs rate such a spine-tingling mythology? Maybe that's it - that they can move so effortlessly, as if by magic. Whatever the reason, snakes - perhaps more than any other animal on the planet - bring out the storyteller in humans.

End of drought brings snakes out of hiding
Authorities say the best way to avoid bites is to use your common sense and avoid picking up or disturbing snakes. By Megan Scott
The Associated Press ATLANTA Yikes! They're back. A bad six pack Georgia has six venomous snakes: the copperhead, diamondback, timber rattler, pigmy rattler, cottonmouth and coral snake. Words of advice To avoid being bitten by a snake, take the following precautions: 1. Watch where you walk.
2. Wear long pants and shoes. 3. Don't run if you see a snake. 4. Don't try to capture a snake. If bitten: 1. Do not use ice, cold packs or sprays 2. Do not apply a tourniquet. 3. Do not drink alcohol, sedatives or any medication until you get medical attention. 4. Do not cut or suck to remove the venom. 5. Do not use electric shocks. 6. Get the patient to the hospital quickly. Venom can work in the first 10 to 15 minutes. Source: Georgia Poison Center After three years of drought, some Georgia residents are dealing with a potentially dangerous side effect of the recent heavy rains snakes. The wetter-than-usual spring has brought the leathery reptiles out of their hiding places and into yards, parking lots and other places where they can meet up with humans. That has led to a rash of snakebites.

Snakes!

Steve, a friend and colleague of mine, who lives out in the country and owns a couple Jack Russell terriers Valerie featured on this site earlier, reported the news that the older of them , Gertie , had recently been bitten on the face by a poisonous serpent. One side of her head swelled up alarmingly; but she seems to be doing better now. The incident brought afresh to my mind how significant a part of life snakes can be. They have loomed large among my earliest memories. I still find them fascinating, so that the herpetarium is usually one of the first things I check out on a zoo visit. When I was still an infant, living in Tampa, FL, there was a huge black snake that sunned itself on our back porch. Dad enjoyed startling Mom and was quite satisfied by her reaction after he'd suddenly wrapped this snake's recently shed skin around her or, later, after he'd cut off the last several inches of its tail (just before time for bed), which was still wriggling when Mom discovered it a few minutes later as she slid her arm under her pillow and prepared to go to sleep. Despite such misadventures, which might suggest she'd want nothing to remind her of snakes, Mom used to read to me from such works as Rudyard Kipling's

Various harmless snakes often are misidentified as cottonmouths and needlesslykilled. Sistrurus catenatus catenatus. Local Name swamp rattler.
http://www.conservation.state.mo.us/nathis/herpetol/snake/snake4.htm
WESTERN FOX SNAKE
Elaphe vulpina vulpina This is a marsh-dwelling member of the rat snake group. General color is yellowish, greenish-brown or tan, with large brown blotches on the back and smaller ones on the sides. The head of fox snakes may show some orange color, which might cause them to be misidentified as a copperhead. Belly color is normally yellow marked with a distinct black, checked pattern. Length averages from 36 to 54 inches (91-137 cm). This species is believed to be an inhabitant of open grasslands and the borders of woods. In Missouri, the fox snake has been found near large, natural marshes, but it is not a common snake. Food includes small rodents and birds. Fox snakes kill their prey by constriction, vibrate their tail when alarmed and will bite to defend themselves. Missouri Distribution: Northern third of the state.
BLACK RAT SNAKE
Elaphe obsoleta obsoleta Local Name: black snake This is one of our largest common snakes. It is generally shiny black, but some individuals show dark brown blotches. Skin between the scales along the sides may be red. The belly is mottled with gray or may be checkered with black. Length averages from 42 to 72 inches (107-183 cm). Black rat snakes live in a wide variety of habitats: rocky, wooded hillsides, wooded areas along rivers, in or near farm buildings. This species is well known for its ability to climb trees. Black rat snakes eat rodents, birds and birds' eggs. They kill their prey by constriction. Farmers are well aware of the value of black rat snakes in controlling destructive rodents. A black rat snake will bite to defend itself, but the bite is harmless. It may vibrate its tail when alarmed. Young of this species are light gray with dark brown or black markings (see inset), but after a year or two of growth, the color normally will change to a more uniform black.

KU herpetologist bitten by rattler wants the snakes banned
The Associated Press

L AWRENCE Whoever released a western diamondback rattlesnake in central Kansas might have forgotten about it by now, but Eric Rundquist never will. A herpetologist at the University of Kansas' Natural History Museum, Rundquist spent two days in intensive care after being bitten by a diamondback rattler found by graduate students near Kanopolis. Western diamondback rattlers aren't native to Kansas and Rundquist thinks it should be illegal to bring them into the state. Each of the past four years, a bill that would make it illegal to import or release non-native venomous snakes in the state has died in legislative committee. "We're not saying this is a huge problem, but with a little forethought maybe we could prevent this," Rundquist said. Considered by some experts to be the most dangerous snakes in North America, western diamondback rattlers have a natural range that extends only to northern Oklahoma. But in recent years, they have been spotted along nature trails at Kanopolis State Park in central Kansas. On June 4, two were brought to the Natural History Museum to be euthanized the 4-footer found by the graduate students and a 3-foot snake caught by members of the Kansas Herpetological Society.

HOW SNAKES GOT SO LONG A Pennsylvania Tale by Danny Ferringer Once in the deep dark woods of Pennsylvania, a small and skinny timber rattler was wandering about the forest. A ferocious bear came along and said in a mean voice, " I need a new pair of snakeskin boots!" The timber rattler said, "OH, NO! I am going to be boots if I don’t get out of here!" Then a big CRACK came from the trees above. It was a sharp shinned hawk and he said in a screeching voice, "I’m going to eat you!" The timber rattler was confused. He did not know what to do. Then the bear went over and took the snake by the tail. The hawk took his sharp claws and took the rattler by the head. The ferocious bear said, "Let go of my new snakeskin boots." The sharp shinned hawk said in a screeching voice, "Let go of MY delicious food." Bear said, "NO!" The hawk said, "Fine, I won’t let go either." The two pulled and pulled the snake to see who would get it. When they were pulling the snake, it stretched and stretched and stretched until the snake was big and long. They stopped pulling for only one minute to catch their breath.

RATTLESNAKES Rattlesnakes are pit vipers. They are called pit vipers because of a heat sensitive organ called a pit. The pit is located between the eyes and mouth on both sides of the head. The pit tells the snake if its prey is a warm blooded animal and how far away it is. Even if the snake is blindfolded it can tell where the animal is.
  • All rattlesnakes are blind in August. A snake will not die before sundown. Rattlers will not cross a horse hair rope. Snakes charm their prey. Snakes swallow their young to protect them.

Report Coming Soon Jennifer's Report on Meditation While at the farm, we should all use the buddy system. The trails could be hiding snakes, wild animals and spiders that could do harm. If bitten, it is important to relax. An anxious, nervous person will only make matters worse. If you are anxious, scared or hyper, the poisons from the bite will circulate through your body faster, doing more harm. It is important to remain calm. Your buddy will get help. At the onset of a bite remain calm. Jennifer gave us all an important demonstration of meditation techniques that we can use if we have been bitten. The excercise showed us to take relaxing cleansing breaths. We should slowly focus on our body parts from our toes to our head telling each part to relax. This activity will slow our heart rate down, slowing our blood flow. This action, hopefully will slow the rate the poison is moving through our body and allows us to think clearer.

And some Texans may think that the drought has reduced their numbers. Think again. Texas Agricultural Extension Service experts say snake populations are very resilient to drought conditions, and some snakes may actually be among the few to benefit from the hot and dry weather. Because large snakes can survive without a meal for five to six months, hot and dry weather does not affect them as severely as other Texas wildlife. Extension herpetologist Neil Wilkins said some of the Texas snake populations may have actually grown as a result of the drought. "Snakes are very long-lived animals, but some of the smaller species need more food more often," he said. "Because this year we had a boom in grasshopper numbers, some of the smaller snakes' populations that eat grasshoppers and other snakes boomed also. As you see an increase in one species, though, you also see a decrease in other species. That's why it's possible to have a population increase in drought times." Wilkins said there is no way to monitor snakes' exact numbers in a long-term scenario, but experts do know that the numbers fluctuate.
