Snakes in the Grand Canyon? Have you seen any? Coming up Nankoweap in August, and very thirsty, I went to where we had cached a bottle of water behind a big boulder, out of the sun. To my dismay and surprise, wrapped around my 1.5 litre bottle was a Rattlesnake! He was as shocked as I was! Do you want to hear what he sounded like? Just click here! Do you have any Grand Canyon Rattlesnake pictures or a ratlesnake story? Send me one and I'll post it here! Have you seen any? On April 21, 2001 on the Lava Falls Route I saw my first Rattlesnake of the year, a Great Basin Rattler. A real beauty, light brown with dark well defined splotches, about 18 inches long! She never even rattled, just calmly moved away out of the path of my big Solomon hiking boot. I was too excited to get a picture! Canyon John saw a small diamondback at the Toroweap / Lave Falls Overlook.
About 20 yards back from the edge. September 27, 2000
Here are some photos of these facinating creatures!
This rattlesnake photo was taken at 3000' near the confluence of Nankoweep and the River, April 1998. The encounter occurred around noon, about mid '70's for a temperature, the snake did not rattle and was a big one, appeared to be over 4 feet long, and I believe it's a Grand Canyon Rattler.

1 mb MOV movie 1 mb AVI movie Courtesy Pennsylvania Wild Resource Conservation Fund American Pit Vipers The Belled Viper One day recently, Curt Brennan used a stick to part some laurel branches in the mountains of northern Pennsylvania. He knew just what he was looking for. Instantly, a harsh insect-like buzzing filled the air, and what looked like a pile of leaves began to move. More than two dozen timber rattlesnakes were basking in the hazy sunshine, heaped in an area the size of a card table. Twenty years ago, Brennan would have been wading into the melee, snatching snakes with his hook and stuffing them into collecting bags, flushed with the danger and excitement of rattler hunting. But Brennan has undergone a change of heart. Finding that snakes are easily injured by the rough handling they receive in capture and seeing that timber rattlers are disappearing from their former haunts, Brennan has become an eloquent spokesman for the snakes, even writing a book, Rattler Tales from Northcentral Pennsylvania , about his conversion from hunter to advocate.

SSSSSSSSnakes
Did you know that there are as many as 21 kinds of snakes in Wisconsin? Wow, that’s a lot! Only two of these snakes are poisonous, the timber rattlesnake and the eastern massasauga (mas-a-sa-gwa) rattlesnake. They are found only in specific habitats in the the southwestern part of the state. A few of Wisconsin’s snakes are endangered including: the massasauga rattlesnake, queen snake, western ribbon snake and the northern ribbon snake. Some snakes are the "protected wild animal" category which means that it is illegal to hunt or possess them.

Fun Facts About Snakes
  • Snakes are ectothermic. Can you guess what that means? It means that they must rely on their surroundings to control their body temperature. So, in the heat of the summer, where do you suppose they go? They head underground or crawl into cool spaces or into areas with lots of vegetation. This keeps them cool in the heat of they day. On a cool day in the spring or fall, you might see a snake "sunning" itself out in the open where the sun can warm it up.

    A Trip Through Time
How does the name "swamp rattler" grab you as a nick name? You may imagine the massasauga rattle snake to be a vicious serpent, ready to strike. The term rattlesnake immediately strikes fear in the hearts of most people. This is because of bad stories or rumors about a species that is in reality very shy and secretive. The massasauga is one of the two poisonous snakes in Wisconsin, the timber rattlesnake is the other. Believe it or not, before 1975 there was a bounty (a fee paid to people who kill "pest" species) in Wisconsin on rattlesnakes, paying up to 5 dollars a tail. In 1975 the bounty was lifted and the massasauga was placed on the Wisconsin Endangered and Threatened Species List. Some people were afraid that protection of the snake would help them to multiply out of control, but the truth was, their numbers have slowly dropped. Habitat loss is a big problem for these snakes, but the number of snakes killed for bounty might have hurt the populations permanently in some areas of the state.

    Active Season for Snakes
Snakes are active from the first war days of spring until the onset of cold weather. They hibernate during cold weather.
    Rattlers and Rodents
Rattlesnakes feed on rodents. Therefore, rodent and rattler control go together. A rodent-free area is unattractive to rattlers, so remove rodent harborages by:
    Piling wood 18" above ground.
Keeping all rubbish and garbage cleared away. Removing grass cuttings, weeds, tree trimmings and the like where rats and mice may nest. Remember that gophers and squirrels are rodents that will attract snakes Hunting Habits Rattlers will hunt for food day or night depending on the temperature, which they prefer to have comfortably even. When the sun is too hot or when it its chilly, snakes will seek shelter under shrubs, logs, rocks or any other place that offers protection against the weather. Caution Baby rattlesnakes are nearly as dangerous as the adult Do It Yourself Protection A cleared strip of land, from 30 to 150 feet wide between yard and brush covered areas, discourages snakes.

    ABC Bites on Rattler Report
Melissa Kaplan, News from the North Bay, 1(9):9-11 Transcript from ABC Evening News, August 30, 1994. Catherine Cryer (CC): Finally tonight, a roundup in Texas that might not be for every city slicker. You'll need a wary eye, a sharp sense of hearing, and a very steady hand. Reporting on tiptoe from Sweetwater, Texas, ABC's Charlie Murphy. Charlie Murphy (CM): Sweetwater is a sweet little town. The Texas theater still runs a double feature. Cash crops are cattle and cotton and rattlesnakes. Every year, Sweetwater holds the world's largest rattlesnake roundup. It's a way to rid the ranches around here of dangerous reptiles and make a little money on the side. Bill Warlick, Rancher (BW): It's not the great test fun in the world, but it's something to do CM: For $50, eager guides will show you how they catch them. You don't have to go far. Brent Burnett, Rattlesnake Hunter (BB): In West Texas, you can find a rattlesnake nearly anywhere. You can find it in town, you know, out in the country, no matter where you're at.

Page Two Page Three Page Four Page Five ... Works Cited Introduction In 1978, my prim Louisiana-bred mother tied a gingham apron over her expensive dress and borrowed my brother's air rifle. Without hesitating, she shot a three-foot rattlesnake in our entryway, leaving six unnecessary holes in the marble and splattering red venom on an antique armoire. With the children following, my mother retrieved a garden hoe from the shed and then smashed the rattler into thirteen mangled pieces. That day, my mother took revenge not merely on loathsome reptiles, but on the decline of her marriage, on the pressures of raising five children, and on the Apple Computer millionaires whose new mansions overshadowed our own. The snake became victim to a family disintegrating. And almost twenty year later, permanently estranged from a woman capable of killing snakes, I remain fascinated by serpent icons. During shifts between cultures and epoches, previous serpent images merge into new ones, with symbolic transformations assuming political significance. As patriarchy subsumed matrifocal realms, the serpent shifted from a sign of female liquidity to a male phallic symbol. As monotheistic Christianity replaced the panorama of paganism, the serpent changed from powerful and multifaceted to exclusively diabolical. And throughout Edmund Spenser efforts in

    Description
Timber Rattlesnakes have a broad triangular shaped head with eyes that, when in bright light, have vertical (cat-like) pupils. Variations in the color of Timber Rattlers may be yellow, dark brown, black or grayish with dark, blotches and/or V-shaped cross bandscalled chevrons across the back. Check out this
picture to see what chevrons look like. In some areas, Timber Rattlers may have a reddish or chestnut colored stripe down the middle of their back. These distinctive patterns may not be that noticeable if the snakes body is very dark like this dark phase
snake. The head is covered with many small scales and often un-patternedalthough in some areas Timber Rattlers will have a dark colored bar extending toward the back, on the side of the head from behind the eye. Body scales are strongly keeledthat is, they have a small ridge running from front to back through the center of the scale. The light, sometimes pinkish colored belly is usually flecked with dark spots.

DEATH RATTLER HISTORY April 9, 1945 the Death Rattlers flew from an escort carrier into Kadena airfield to fly missions in support of Operation Iceberg, the campaign for Okinawa. Combat operations commenced the following day. Between April and the surrender of Japanese forces in August, the Death Rattlers shot down 124 Japanese planes in aerial combat without a single loss to an enemy pilot. Twelve VMF-323 fighter pilots became Aces - three of them in a single day. The deadly, effective close air support (CAS) the Death Rattlers gave the Leathernecks on the ground was just as important as the squadron's tremendous accomplishments in air combat. To the Marine riflemen engaged in the bloodiest close-quarter fighting of the war, Marine Corsairs became the "Sweethearts of Okinawa." March 1946 found the Death Rattlers based at MCAS El Toro, Calif., and engaged in a rigorous peacetime training program. Operating from land and sea, VMF-323 participated in exercises throughout the western U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii. The squadron also provided Hollywood, Calif., with Marine airpower for the 1949 classic, Sands of Iwo Jima. June 25, 1950, North Korean troops invaded South Korea. Within a month, VMF-323 began combat operations from the escort carrier USS Badoeng Strait, in support of ground forces in the Pusan perimeter. Again proving the effectiveness of Marine close air support during heavy fighting at Pusan, the Inchon landing, the breakout of the 1st Marine Division from the Chosin Reservoir, and every major campaign of the war, the Death Rattlers further built on the combat reputation of the Marine Air-Ground Team. Flying alternately from Navy carriers and austere airfields ashore, VMF-323 flew primarily air-to-ground missions such as CAS, interdiction, and armed reconnaissance. Reflecting this change in its primary mission, the squadron was re-designated Marine Attack Squadron 323 (VMA-323) in June 1952. The Death Rattlers departed Korea in July 1953 after accumulating 48,000 hours of flight time, and once again serving with distinction in combat.

The Bottom Line This story COULD be true. I think it is. What do you think?
I don’t know how much of this story is true. It’s my grandfather’s story. My mother and my aunt Hazel were there, and they say it’s true. My Grandmother was, I think, a little like Diver Pam in her personality. She saw the good in everyone, but if Grandfather stretched the truth a little, she would not go along with it. She would smile graciously, and not commit herself one way or another until she was sure of her facts. As for Grandpa, well, the older he got the better his stories became. Aunt Hazel and Mom, though, claim this story is true. Grandma says it was true also, but she always adds, “I am not proud of it.”
It seems that a very long time ago, probably about seven of eight years after the turn of the nineteenth century, Grandpa and Grandma and their five children moved to Lake Andes. S.D. There was a hotel there for sale, and there was some land that they wanted to homestead.
Grandpa also applied for, and got the job of postmaster, and one of the front rooms in the hotel became the post office.
