WESTMONT ILLINOIS, The Rat and Mouse Fanciers for Excellence (RMFE) is proud to announce the debut of its online International Rodent Registry (IRR), which enables fanciers to instantly research the history of any registered rat or mouse.
RMFE’s registry was established in January of 2000. Before the database was made available online, fanciers could obtain animal histories by mail (mail service is still available). The registry records information such as the breeder of the animal, its lineage, appearance, show results and titles. Fanciers are also encouraged to make notes on the animal’s temperament and health. This enables rat and mouse breeders to stay informed about lines so that they can make more responsible breeding choices. All fanciers with pet rats and mice are encouraged to register their animals. The registry records both pet animals as well as those in breeding programs. The registration of pet animals is valuable to the fancy as it helps identify trends in the pet population- such as common health problems and life expectancy. The registration of non-breeding pet animals can be done for free. There is a small fee to register breeding animals.

Nutrition:
Feeding Rats, Mice, Hamsters, and Gerbils
Whereas owners of pet rabbits have ready access to quality pelleted, commercial rabbit feed, owners of small rodents must obtain feed from the array of colorful boxes of food and supplements at the pet store. Included among these feed may be seed mixtures, seeds mixed with vitamin and mineral pellets (often ignored by the pet), hay cubes, pelleted complete diets, salt blocks, pieces of chewable wood, and a variety of treat foods that lure the unsuspecting buyer because those treats resemble the snack foods preferred by pet owners. Of most pet rodent feeds available, only the pelleted, complete diets (with at least 16 percent quality protein) have use as primary diets. The standard pelleted, complete diets may be fed to the Old World rodents: hamsters, gerbils, mice, and rats. The recommended diet for these pet rodents, therefore, is a reasonably fresh pellet incorporating essential nutrients, containing at least 16 percent crude protein, with the box labeled "meets NRC requirements" or a similar message. Conventional (natural ingredient) pet animal diets produced by reputable companies usually contain adequate balanced nutritional components, but even those diets can be altered by damp, heat, oxidation, and vermin contamination. Owner-compounded diets, on the other hand, are more likely than are commercial products to lack certain trace nutrients, to be unbalanced, or to be contaminated with bacteria or mold.

Top 10 Rat Cages

Top 7 Rat Books

Elsewhere on the Web Rats on Myomorpha Rats Rule Rats are lovely, intelligent, and social animals that can make wonderful pets. They are easily tamed, and relatively easy to care for, as well. However, they do require a fair amount of attention and time outside the cage (at least an hour a day is ideal), so are not really low maintenance pets. Being social, rats should be kept in groups - a pair or more of the same sex (or else you will quickly be over run by babies!). Keeping them in groups will make them no less easy to tame, as long as they are handled from a young age regularly. They are curious by nature and enjoy coming out of their cages for play and exploration time, and many owners compare the companionship of a rat to that of a dog. A rat deprived of the opportunity to explore and play will quickly become bored and unhappy. Housing A large wire cage is best, as it allows the rat some climbing space. It can be quite tall as this allows for the provision of ramps, platforms, and ladders, which will make the cage more enjoyable for the rats. As a minimum, the cage should have 12 by 24 inches of floor space for two smaller rats. Larger is always better. Aquariums are okay, but do not provide optimum ventilation, so the litter will have to be cleaned more often.

How to give a Cat a Bath
by Cathy Powell
Our Favorite Wild Animal Meerkats were recently made famous by the movie "The Lion King" because one of the main characters, Timon, is a Meerkat. Isn't he cute? As it turns out Meerkats are in the same family as the Mongoose of which there are many different varieties. Meerkats live in family units in boroughs (dens) that they dig underground. The Meerkat in the picture above is probably acting as the lookout for the den. The lookout duty is traded off among the adult Meerkats of the den so someone can alert them to danger at all times. Although Meerkats are not available as pets, we think they are a delightful addition to our information service!

Back to: Advice about Pets Feb 2002 Several years ago we had a pet rat (now deceased). Now my daughter wants one or two mice. Most people we've talked to have rats so we'd appreciate any information about the pros and cons of having mice as pets. Thanks. Stefanie Mice don't live very long. Neither do hamsters, although they can be awfully cute, especially the teddy bear ones. Rats live longer which is why they make better pets. Pet deaths are never pleasant to deal with. My son went through a mouse phase a few years back and we ended up with so many mice. The males would fight with each other and had to be separated. The problem was solved when my husband brought home two orange tabby kittens so the mice had to go for breeding stock. If you really want to get two mice, make sure they are both females. They are not as territorial and will not fight as much. Marianne What makes a good pet? We vote for RATS!

Oh Boy, Oh Boy - A Look at Male Rats
By Rebekah Blackwolf

Founder of the Australian Mouse and Rat Information Service.
It does not seem fortunate to be born a rat in a human plagued world. More so, it is even less lucky to be born a male rat. Rat owners will agree that our lovable choice of pet is often discriminated against; however, it is the male rat who is the most misunderstood.
Many breeders are finding it harder to get homes for boy rats than for girls. It is not uncommon for breeders to house more females than males, leaving them with excess male rats who either become neglected through lack of handling or become 'feeders' (sold as reptile food).
Pet shops favour selling their male rats and mice cheaper to customers who want them as reptile food, finding female rodents can be sold for a higher cost as they are more popular for pets.
While working in Pets Paradise - a well known pet shop chain here in Australia - I found it was common practise for male rats and mice to be sold for reptile food. This was due to the fact that (to quote my former boss): "Nobody wants them as pets. They all want girls".
The Australian Mouse and Rat Information Service is always left with more males to foster than females. Ironically enough, I have found that males are the more gentle of both sexes.

Soon after returning Tarot to her owner I came across two Siamese rats in a pet shop. Not being able to resist I brought them home, thus Suki and Spaz became the foundation of my Siamese line. These two rats introduced me to the rat and mouse Fancy, and through reading up on them I became acquainted with the American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association. When I moved to Southern California in 1993 I was able to become more involved in activly breeding and showing both rats and mice. Since that time it has been my great pleasure to have owned and bred six generations of Best In Show Grand Champion Siamese rats as well as numerous Best In Show mice and many best pet winners.
I firmly believe that when breeding animals it is very important to concentrate on doing one thing, and doing it very well. For this reason I have consintrated on breeding Siamese rats and Brindle mice. Over the years I have added several different colors and coat types of each to my line as an added challenge. Thus my litters often produce both Blue Point and Seal Point Siamese rats in Standard and Satin coats as well as Black/Fawn, Chocolate/Red, Beige/White, and Blue/Cream Brindle mice in Standard and Satin Coats. In an attempt to bring in some characteristics my Siamese line lacked I recently outcrossed into Black Self. As a result, my litters currently contain numerous self colored babies including Blue, Russian Blue, Black, Chocolate, Silver Blue, and Dove. Though I do not concentrate on breeding Selfs, these non-Siamese offspring have surprised me by doing very well in the show ring.
