Hamster <- Click here to go back to Animaland Congratulations on your new pet! They may be small, but hamsters are BIG on personality. Read on to find out about all the responsibilityand FUNinvolved in caring for these furry, four-legged friends. THE 411
Noticed that some hamsters are bigger than others? It's not that the smaller ones are youngermost likely they're different species. Syrian hamster
Scientific name:
Mesocricetus auratus
Size: Six inches long
Colors: Usually golden, but they can also have patches and bands and blobs of white, yellow, orange or gray.
Lifespan: Two to three years
The most common pet hamster is the Syrian hamster. If you have one of these hammies, he's a descendant of the first hamsters captured from the wild in 1930. Syrians are sometimes called golden hamsters, because of their honey-colored fur, which can be long or short, silky or fluffy. Syrian hamsters like to live alone and prefer their own turf. If you put two in one cage, very soon they will begin to chatter their teeth at each other and start to fight. Battles can be fierce! Dwarf Campbell's Russian hamster
Scientific name:
Phodopus campbelli
Size: Three inches long
Color: Gray
Lifespan: One to two years This little guy is the most common dwarf hamster available in pet stores. Dwarf hamsters look pleasantly plump and like to live in pairsbut you must introduce them when they're young. As a rule, don't put a new hammy in with a group who've been living together, or with an adult who's used to living alone.

If you really like rats, you may enjoy reading about them (or playing games or watching movies or.. etc). You may be researching them... either way, here is a list of rat sources and literature you can turn to. Note: This page keeps me so busy that I go over things rather quickly. If I accidentally turn up a book that is of bad taste to rat owners (such as a laboratory analysis or a rat-bashing essay about bubonic plague), please e-mail me and I'll remove it ASAP. A rat is dirty, caused the bubonic plague and is stupid. FICTION Rats make excellent pets, they are loving, extremely intelligent (one of ours learned to recognize his name after having been with us for just 3 days - and he was in the same room as 30 others, so it's not coincidence!)

Toys: Rats seem to be able to amuse themselves quite well whether it be grooming one another, chasing each other, re-organising nest boxes or carrying food around. Toys can improve the mental health of your rat and create an interesting environment which may increase their lifespan. Toys that rats like to play with can be cardboard boxes with a hole cut in it, hammocks, ladders, PVC tubes, postage tubes (from post offices), chew toys for dogs, wooden toys for birds, ropes and branches from lilli pilli and apple trees. Rawhide is not suitable.
Rats and mice, particularly ones kept in cages, enjoy having toys to occupy them. Toys can provide both mental and physical exercise for your pet. Both types of exercise will improve your pet's health and well being. In Australia the toys that are available in pet shops that are designed for rats and mice are really limited. I hope then, in this article, to give you ideas of homemade toys and using bird/ferret/hamster toys for your rats and mice.
One of the first rules to remember is - don't spend too much money on toys for rats and mice. They will be damaged to some extent, if not destroyed and you may have to replace them regularly. Mice and rats will chew toys and metal toys can become damaged when urine causes them to rust.

INDEX
Did you know that there are substances in your home that are poisonous to your pet? You can easily find all of these products in stores. In fact, pet owners buy and use them regularly. But by reading labels; keeping informed of what substances are dangerous; and keeping these products out of your pet's reach, you can substantially reduce the chances that your dog or cat will become poisoned. Flea and tick control products can cause serious toxic reactions when misused. This includes shampoos, sprays, dips and formulas that treat the environment. Symptoms of poisoning may appear 1 to 6 hours after exposure and include muscle tremors, vomiting, excessive salivation and difficulty in breathing. Make sure to follow manufacturer's instructions when using flea and tick control products on your pets. Never use a formula that's meant for dogs on your cat, and vice versa.
