The General Care of Pet Rats and Mice
GENERAL
Rats and mice in the wild can be one of the worst pests for mankind, notwithstanding their indispensable part within the ecosystem. Domestic rats and mice, on the other hand, contribute a great deal to the advancement of research for the benefit of man. Domestic rats and mice are not the same as their wild counterparts, having been domesticated for over 100 years. Rats and mice AS PETS suffer from bad "press" with much prejudice and misunderstanding directed toward them. As urban sprawl continues to limit the necessary space needed to keep dogs and cats, rats and mice as pets are gradually emerging as an ideal substitute. Easy to keep, with minimal space and care requirements, they provide all the pleasure and satisfaction of a warm, cuddly, intelligent, and friendly pet companion. They are also very inexpensive to obtain along with the required accessories needed to make them happy. Domesticated rats make excellent pets for children and adults alike. They are highly intelligent (being the most used in studies for intelligence and psychology research), clean, and very sociable. They interact with their owners the same as dogs and cats do and may be easily trained. Although rodents are nocturnal (sleeping during the day and active at night), rats will quickly learn to adjust their schedule and be ready to come out and play when you get home from school or work. Pet rats and mice require no vaccinations and carry no diseases. The Plague of the twelfth century Europe was caused by the

The Right Pet for You
Mice are lively and easily tamed, but are active at night and may smell. Rats are intelligent and interesting to look at, but need a lot of space and attention.
Companionship - to be with other rats or mice and to have human company. A balanced diet of mixed grains, washed fruit and vegetables. Rats can also have seeds, nuts and small pieces of cooked meat. Both should have a salt or mineral lick to keep them healthy. A constant supply of fresh, clean drinking water in a drip feed bottle with a metal spout. A large home kept indoors in a warm place, out of direct sunlight. Rats need a lot of floor space, ideally on more than one level. Mice should have a solid exercise wheel (with no open rungs) fixed to the wall of their home.

Playtime for Pet Rats Your rats need time out of their cage every day to play. We let ours out to run around on their play table, the computer table, on the covered couch or bed, and some of them get to run around on the floor. Before you let them go in or out of the house, be sure the area is rat-proofed and that the rats are not going to run away and hide. Teach them to come when called, and always stay close to them so you can keep them out of trouble. It is also helpful to keep a litter pan handy or keep the play area close enough to the cage that they can relieve themselves when they need to.

Download this Book and Save Hundreds on Vet Bills!
We all want our beloved rodents to be happy and healthy. This means paying the vet hundreds of dollars for exams, right? No! Ask any vet the care your rodent gets at home has far more effect on his health than any vet exam. In fact, most vets give out advice along with prescriptions advice that could have prevented the illness in the first place! Wouldn't you like to have that advice now, before you have to hear it from your vet? Rats, mice, gerbils, hamsters, and guinea pigs all have different needs. For instance, guinea pigs cannot metabolize vitamin C on their own, so you must provide it in their diet every day, or they can develop serious, and even fatal, health problems. Rats and mice don't have this problem, however. Understanding your rodent's diet needs is easy, will keep him healthier and happier, and can prevent expensive treatments in the future. Note: we are not saying you will never have to visit the vet again! Vet care is important to your pet's health. However, with the care techniques in this book, you can prevent a multitude of costly illnesses with just a little knowledge!

One text which uses this other system is The Mammal Species of the World (MSW) , maintained by the Smithsonian Institution. Additionally, some choose to elevate the above two suborders within Rodentia to the status of order; recognizing, "true" rodents (squirrels, rats, mice, etc.) from the "hystricognath" rodents (chinchillas, degus, guinea pigs, etc.). This less widely followed scheme is more a semantic difference, as all the classifications recognize the same major lineages and relationships between these animals. Caring for your pet rat
When some people think of rats, they think of a dirty, disease carrying, undesirable rodent. This could not be farther from the truth. Domesticated rats are clean, disease-free, and very intelligent. Rats make wonderful pets for children or adults. They are easy to care for and will give lots of pleasure in return. According to the website "Our Rats - Rats as Pets", written by Tanja Saily, rats have been kept as pets as far back as the 1800's in England. She says that rats were not the cause of the Black Plague in the middle ages, It was cause by fleas on the rats and people living in unsanitary conditions. bodyOffer(21058) Rats can live approximately two to three years, and they are about sixteen to twenty inches long including the tail, according to "Mice and Rats: The General Care of Pet Rats and Mice", published by Petswarehouse.com, Inc. It says an adult male rat can weigh up to two pounds but typically weighs less. "Mice and Rats: The General Care of Pet Rats and Mice" recommends the following housing for a pet rat. Rats like to chew, so the cage should be designed to resist chewing and gnawing. Aquariums make great cages for rats since they are very easy to clean and disinfect. They are also relatively inexpensive and come in a variety of sizes. An aquarium for two rats should be at least fifteen gallons. The same article recommends the use of hardwood shavings, shredded paper, or pelleted paper as bedding. It warns that cedar and pine bedding often sold for small animals is toxic, and it can cause lung disease and damage to the internal organs. It is important for odor control and for the health of your pet to clean the cage once each week. Remove the old bedding, clean the cage with hot, soapy water, and add about two to three inches of new bedding material.

http://www.hilltopanimalhospital.com/mice&rats.htm
Return to Pocket Pets Page Care of Pet Mice and Rats November/December 1994 Vol. F, No. 6 Veterinary Practice STAFF This information leaflet is designed as a method of communication between veterinarians and clients who own pet mice or rats. The environment, handling, and diet of these rodents are discussed, and common health problems specific to each species are explored. If you have any questions, be sure to ask your veterinarian to answer them for you. Mice and rats make excellent pets when they are properly cared for (Table 1). These timid, social rodents are fun to watch while they perform their natural behaviors of burrowing, searching for food, and playing. Pet rats and mice have periods of activity during both day and night. They seldom bite when handled with care. Diet Good quality food and clean, fresh water should be available at all times for your pet mouse or rat. pelleted rodent rations which are processed as dry blocks or pellets are recommended. Typical maintenance diets should contain about 14% protein and 4 to 5% fat, while diets for growth and reproduction should contain 17 to 19% protein and 7 to 11% fat. While many rodents prefer sunflower-based diets to pellets, seeds are low in calcium and high in fat and cholesterol. When fed exclusively, seed-based diets can lead to obesity and nutritional deficiencies. It is best to give your pet mouse or rat seeds only as a supplement to a pelleted diet, or as a treat. Many factors can affect your pet rodent's food intake. Such factors may include environment temperature and humidity, food quality, breeding status, and health status. On average, an adult mouse will consume about 15 g of feed and 15 ml of water per 100 g body weight daily. Comparatively, an adult rat will consume approximately 5 g of feed and 10 ml of water per 100 g body weight daily. Both rats and mice typically eat at night. Water should be provided in bottles equipped with sipper tubes. Tubes should be positioned low enough to allow the pet easy access. Inadequate water consumption can result in dehydration, lower body weight, infertility, and, even death. Empty, clean, and refill your rodent's water bottle with fresh water each day.
