College entrance exams are designed to test cumulative knowledge – in other words, what the student brings with him or her from high school. But that isn’t all. The tests are also targeting deductive skills. For instance, both the ACT and the SAT sometimes give the test-taker answer choices for which the high school graduate is expected to understand all but one – the correct one. The idea is for the test-taker to use what is known to him or her about the other choices to eliminate them as correct answers. The answer left may be unfamiliar, but it is a logical choice because the student knows the others are definitely inappropriate. This type of skill comes from the use of deductive reasoning.

Students will:
understand that ratios are used to create scale models of buildings and structures; understand the principles of ratio and apply these principles in the solution of problems; and understand how to calculate scale using ratio.
The class will need the following: 0.25-inch graph paper map(s) of the United States pencils ruler (metric or inches) tape measure Take-Home Activity Sheet: Home Measurements Begin by introducing the concept of scale. Write the word scale on the board and brainstorm examples of where scales are found and what they measure. For example, we use scales to measure the weight of an object, the temperature of air, the length of an object, and so on. Show students a map of the United States and point out the scale in the map key. Remind them that this map is a smaller, scaled-down representation of the United States, not an actual representation. Explain that sometimes we shrink objects or make them larger so they are easier to work with. The map is a scale model of an object that is too large to represent on paper. Other scale models represent objects that are too small, such as a diagram of an atom or a magnified view of a computer chip. Review the scale on the map. For example, the scale may say that 1 inch is equal to 50 miles. Explain that a scale is a ratio used to determine the size of a model of a real object. In this case, the map of the United States is the model.

Keeping Up With The Doctors

Student will have the opportunity to do a direct simulation by using actual data created at Driscoll Children"s Hospital to create a report used to document the amount of patient charts that docotrs complete. They will discuss the different formats in which to represent the data, and the data relationships.

How Much Does It Pay?
Student will have the opportunity to do a direct simulation by working out the salary a newly-hired nurse can earn when
hired at Driscoll Children's hospital. Using Linear Approximations to Understand Nuclear Scans
Students will have the opportunity to do a related simulation using actual data created in a nuclear scan at Driscoll Children's
Hospital. They will graph the data, discuss the relationships between slope and y-intercept, and finally predict the rate at
which a patients stomach will be empty. Using Percentages to Evaluate Deomographics of Hiring Data Students will pretend to be a lawyer working with Driscoll Children's Hospital, reading raw data and compiling percentages
used to evaluate the way in which DCH complies with EEO hiring standards.

Unit Plan for Ratio, Proportion, and Percent Curriculum Unit Plan Mathematics Seventh Grade Unit 3: Ratio, Proportion, and Percent Abstract In this unit students learn to reason proportionally. Proportional reasoning provides an underpinning for the study of algebra in future years. Students learn to think in relative amounts as expressed by ratios and rates (e.g., 15 miles/gallon, 4/3). When students perceive relationships involving growth, unit costs, etc., they are thinking proportionally. They learn how to apply ratio and proportion to many daily activities such as sales tax, the relationship between hours worked and earned income, actual distances between cities compared to map distances, and unit pricing at grocery stores. Percents are studied as ratios in which the divisor is 100, and students apply percent in many practical situations. Unit Title Ratio, Proportion, and Percent Grade Level/Course Title Seventh Grade/Mathematics Focus Questions What is proportional reasoning and how do we use it Do you need one hundred things to use percent How can proportional relationships be represented using tables, graphs, and

Here's a nice resource to explore, PBS TeacherSource
Hey Math Teachers, Lynn has moved us a little further along by matching up some links with some of the objectives. Several of the sites have applications which apply to more than one objective. If we choose to concentrate on a few of these sites, our students may become more familiar with them and thusly become more comfortable practicing their skills using these sites. As you find time to try a couple of the exercises, remember to make note of what objectives you think they might reinforce. Keep in touch. Rob.
