National Technical Institute for the Deaf
    Rochester, NY
Target Audience: - 9th grade Introduction:
Introduction to the vocabulary (ratio, per, proportion). Students will have a general understanding of the differences between these terms. Materials:
    • Overhead Paper and pencils
    Hands on Activity/ Writing Activity
  • Ask students to write on a sheet of paper what the word "ratio" means, or words that come to mind. Ask students to share their ideas with the class and from that the rest of the information for the lesson will flow.
  • A ratio is a comparision of 2 numbers A ratio such as 3/5 shows the relationship in size of each quantity compared. A ratio compares two quantities in a particular order. The order is very important.

    Working With Ratios
Activity Area: Mathematics Developed by: Lori C. Niemann
National Technical Institute for the Deaf
    Rochester, NY
Target Audience: - Middle School Algebra Introduction:
Students will participate in a game called "The Penny Box," calculating the ratio of events such as number of misses to the total number of pennies thrown. Students will then create equivalent proportions based on their ratios. Materials:
    • Pennies Cardboard box
    Hands on Activity:
  • Introduce the formal definition of Ratio to the students. A Ratio is a comparison of two measurements. Students are to take turns tossing 10 pennies towards the center of the cardboard box provided by the teacher. Using the worksheet provided, students should be recording the misses and successes of each other. When everyone is finished, students are then to calculate the ratio of hits to total shots. On a second worksheet, students are to choose two of the students in class and predict using their information, how many hits would be made if there were 20 shots taken, 50 shots, or 100 shots. Discuss with students their predictions and reasons. Explain the definition of a proportion. Demonstrate how to use a proportion to solve a problem like the above predictions that does not include guessing.

    Mini Lesson On Proportion
    Summary: Proportion, Fifth/Sixth Grade
Proportions are equivalent to ratios. Ratios are fractions that compare one part to another part. A proportion is two ratios multipled by each other to get the whole amount of the two. In my lesson, I plan to teach by using hands on material such as snap blocks to illustrate ratio and proportion that I may use, but I will encourage my students to find other methods and strategies for finding proportion. Equation for finding proportion: a c - = - if ad=bc b d Proportion brings in other concepts such fractions, ratios, and equivalence. My lesson uses these concepts and applies them.
Rationale: It is important to teach proportion because it shows students how to compare two parts to a whole and uses fractions to solve the problem. My lesson is significant because it allows students to discover that there are many ways to show the same fraction, develop strategies for showing fractions using geometry and tables, and uses ratios and proportions. My lesson meets the NCTM Standards by exploring proportion by reducing and enlarging drawing using grids. The students are to use grids for graphing their proportions that they constructed using Snap Cubes.
Learning Objectives: Grade 5: Competency Goal 6: The learner will demonstrate an understanding and use of graphing, probability, and statistics.

    Goals
  • To broaden students' understanding of population and food supply problems in different countries. To show how mathematics can be used to solve and or understand real life problems. To involve students in research and discovery activities.
  • Rationale
The student will apply mathematical reasoning to solve problems that relate to other areas of human endeavor. This leads to more appreciation of the value of mathematics education.
    Objectives
  • The student will be able to search for information about the population, landmass, and food supply of different countries on the Net. The student will be able to represent the information collected pictorially and symbolically. The students will be able to compute ratios and proportions based on the information obtained. The student will be able to give interpretations and make sense of the ratios and proportions computed.
  • Methodology
  • The student search the Net for information regarding the population, land area, and annual food production of the countries selected by the student or by the teacher.
