A Look at Yesterday
From the moment you first step into our city, you'll feel the rich history of our heritage. Founded in 1860, Sedalia began as a rough frontier town in the new west. When the Pacific Railroad arrived a year later. Sedalia boomed as it began its evolution into the Queen City of the Prairies. As you will soon discover, Sedalia still offers a view of her glorious past in the 19th century architecture visible throughout the city. From our Historic Downtown Business District to our tree-lined boulevards, a visit to Sedalia is a trip back in time. Sedalia is far more than bricks and mortar. Whether you are coming for the festivals or the fairs, for the history or the hospitality, we look forward to your visit, and we welcome you to Sedalia.
Bothwell Lodge State Historic Site
John Homer Bothwell was one of Sedalia's greatest benefactors. His country estate, Stonyridge, is located north of the city on Highway 65 and showcases his home, Bothwell Lodge, a massive stone structure built in sections between 1897 and 1928. The surrounding Bothwell Lodge State Park is open daily from 8 am to sunset, and features picnic areas, a hiking trail, playground and recreational equipment. For information call 660-827-0510.

UPCOMING SCHOOL AND LEARNING PROGRAMS

HISTORY OF SCHOOL PROGRAMS

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Two types of school programs are offered to Tulsa area schools. Barbara Geary , a Tulsa resident, and Donald Ryan , a member of the faculty at Oral Roberts University, offer programs that may be scheduled at the request of a Tulsa or Northeast Oklahoma school. A limited number of a second type of program are performed by out-of-town ragtime arists in conjunction with their visits to Tulsa to give public concerts. Programs are available for elementary, middle school and high schools. Past performances of the second type have included several performances by the Etcetera String Band from Kansas City. The St. Louis Ragtimers performed a school concert in the fall of 2000 and the TurpinTyme Ragsters, a ragtime ensemble from Kansas City, gave a school performance/lecture in the fall of 2001. Barbara Geary programs of ragtime and early American music are available for presentation at a limited number of Tulsa area schools. Barbara Geary, an accomplished pianist and former OSU faculty member presents a program lasting up to 50 minutes. She performs on the piano, gives a history of each piece and answers student questions. The pieces she performs span the time from Abraham Lincoln to the Jazz age. Composers represented included: Scott Joplin, George Gershwin, Louis Moreau Gottschalk and James P. Johnson. She explains that ragtime music is written down and played pretty much as written by all performers, while most jazz involves some improvisation. The program has been well received by schools at which Geary has performed. The program is appropriate for school assemblies and gatherings of students who are involved in music programs or history of music.

    Ragtime! Revisited
Exactly two years ago, in June of 1999 , we presented a feature on Ragtime music. With only a few songs and a short "In search Of" article, that issue proved to be one of our most popular. Since that time we have developed our feature articles and In Search Of articles to a higher level so this month we would like to have an opportunity to share with you more of our Ragtime works and an expanded In Search Of article about Ragtime . If you have read that original article, be sure to revisit it as we have added more in-depth definition of the genre, expanded the history, added some musical examples and refined the Scott Joplin biography information. We have a great deal of tremendous music to present you this month and are expanding our feature to include a lucky thirteen songs rather than our usual ten to accommodate all the wonderful ragtime music. In addition, you will find two others in our Ragtime, In Search Of article. So, sit back, get your Scorch player revved up and enjoy a summer picnic of ragtime music from the past masters of piano rags and rag songs. IMPORTANT NOTICE: WITH LYRICS ! Though we often find plug-ins to be annoying, this is one that we guarantee will be well worth the time to download and install. If you are not automatically directed to the Active-x version, download the Scorch player from Sibelius right now, then enjoy an astounding musical experience! The player is available for Mac and PC. Just click on the button below to go to the Sibelius site and get your free plug-in.
