Staff Writer ``I learned so much about circus music last year, I thought I would come and learn about ragtime this year,'' said Edward Berlin, a speaker at the conference on American band history as he began the symposium. The remark was met with much laughter as author/scholar Berlin is recognized as an expert on ragtime music, the theme this year. Berlin, of New York, gave an overview of the musical genre. He has written a number of books about it and lectures extensively all over the country. Distilling it, ragtime is ``march music played in a special way,'' Berlin said. He said it was the ``purest manifestation of American music,'' and likely the first American music. It is punctuated by syncopated off beats that, in its heyday from 1896 to 1917, were associated with black American musicians. ``It's always connected with the march, even on piano,'' Berlin said. ``The typical rag is a close cousin of the march.'' America was undergoing a cultural inferiority complex when ragtime was popular, so newspapers would run stories saying the king of England or the czar of Russia liked ragtime music. Pianist Scott Kirby of New Orleans underscored Berlin's talk with musical accompaniment and illustration. His renditions of ``Maple Leaf Rag,'' ``My Coal Black Lady,'' a medley of John Philip Sousa marches, and ``American Beauty Rag'' were definitely crowd pleasers, all followed by emphatic rounds of applause.

Staff Writer All you ragtime junkies are in for a raggedy good time at this year's Great American Brass Band Festival Conference on American Band History. ``The Ragtime Era'' was chosen as this year's topic. An entertaining mood will dominate, explained program chair Frank Cipolla. ``They can enjoy it. They're not coming to take exams on turn-of-the-century bands. They are going to enjoy themselves and they are going to learn something.'' The topics for the band conference are carefully chosen each year and presented in a lively fashion, Cipolla said. ``Ragtime is such a listenable kind of music. They're not going to fall asleep when Dick Zimmerman (a conference performer/speaker) plays.'' Cipolla said ragtime is a very important segment of American music. ``Some people have called it one of the first (genres) of American music. It's a forerunner of jazz because it is a syncopated kind of music.'' The name ragtime describes the beat of the music. ``The time (of the music) was ragged. It's not even. It has this certain rhythm to it that is unique.'' Ragtime music began its rise to popularity before the turn of the century, around 1896, and continued its glory days through World War I, or about the time entertainer Scott Joplin died in 1917, Cipolla said. It faded into obscurity early in this century ``because jazz idioms really took over.''

Brian Dykstra Celebrates 30 Years as a Ragtime Musician For more information, contact: John Finn FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AUGUST 29, 2001 WOOSTER, Ohio - They call it ragtime, and few do it better than Brian Dykstra. A professor of music at The College of Wooster, Dykstra has been performing and composing ragtime music for the past 30 years, and he will share those talents with the public when he presents a free recital of "Rags and Cuban Danzas" on Sunday, Sept. 9 and again on Saturday, Sept. 15. Dykstra became interested in ragtime music in 1971 while looking for an unusual encore for an otherwise classical recital. "I thought it would be interesting to try something different, and I came upon a book, titled 'They All Played Ragtime,'" he said. "In it were some of (Scott) Joplin's rags, so I tried a few of them, and I liked the sound." Since that time, Dykstra, and the more than 300 audiences he has entertained at recitals over the past three decades, have fallen in love with the music. "What I like about rag is the happiness it exudes and the fact that audiences seem to enjoy hearing it," he said. "Ragtime is very much like a syncopated march because it has the same structure and similar harmonies and bass lines as well as that uplifting, inspiring feeling. I also like the fact that it challenges my technique." Rag music can be "quite difficult" to play, according to Dykstra, but somehow he makes it look easy. "Brian Dykstra is the complete pianist for the ragtime style," said noted entertainer Max Morath just a few years after Dykstra began playing ragtime. "His superb classical technique provides him mastery unstrained, without losing the folk quality of early ragtime. He has obviously immersed himself deeply and affectionately into rag repertory, and emerges as a new member of the style - never, by the way, forgetting to 'let the joy come through.'"

Mr. Bingham has just returned from his 1915 tour on the Keith-Albee Circuit, and is here to entertain you live and in person! Born in the hills of Richmond, Virginia in 1870, his stage debut was at the age of 6 in 1876. Since that early debut Mr. Bingham has appeared with great success as character actor all over the U.S.A. I have known Mr. Bingham for a good many years and he's funny because he can't help it. If he went into the undertaking business, he would be expelled from the union in a week. He was born to drive dull care away - a doctor who cures by the good old rule of "laugh and grow fat." And he is one of the few doctors who seem to take their own medicine. On the platform or off, with an audience of one or five hundred, Mr. Bingham's hearers are shrieking with laughter wherever he performs. Two good stories are offered in this evening's performance - an amusing soliloquy by a "tough kid" in the bleacher audience, and Mr. Bingham's famous " Possum Hunt," which he has told thousands of times, and which always makes a hit.

Then they will divide into partners and being to use the internet to research ragime music. They will have about 45 minutes per set of students. They then will start to create their instruments using the materials I have provided. They will be given 45 minutes to do this also.

The Ragtime Story
The history of ragtime is mirrored in the life and progress of Scott Joplin. This is not merely because Joplin was one of the great ragtime composers. The King of Ragtime experienced many of the elements whose confluence developed into those Euphonic Sounds which were the musical delight of America and even Europe at the turn of the century. The birth of ragtime is commonly set by the date of the first published rag. In 1895, Ben Harney published his ragtime song You've Been a Good Old Wagon in Louisville. This was the man who, a year later, brought ragtime to popularity in New York City. The first instrumental ragtime was William Krell's Mississippi Rag in January, 1897. It was not until the end of 1897, however, that Negro instrumental ragtime made its way to the publishers' presses with Tom Turpin's Harlem Rag . Having already published marches and waltzes, Scott Joplin finally published Original Rags in 1899. Relying on published works of music is misleading. This view of the birth of ragtime suggests that white men were at the forefront of sculpting the art form and that the best ragtime was committed to the printed page. Blacks were playing ragtime long before Krell's Orchestra, and making enough money from tips to live well. Even when publishers began to accept their lively, syncopated pieces, many composers rarely sold their work, having little need of money beyond the tips that accompanied performances in bars or on stage. If publication represents the birth of ragtime, then there had been a long gestation including many late night sessions when pianists and bands would rag behind closed doorsin private homes or in bars after closingwhere the most elaborate and boisterous music was often reserved for the artists' personal enjoyment.

Series 3: AFRICAN-AMERICAN MUSIC ca. 1828-1980 by: Karen Linn, 1989 Scope and Content
The African-American series contains ca. 7,800 pieces of sheet music and folios dating from the 1820s to the 1980s; most of the material dates from after 1890. Many of the pieces were composed or performed by Afro-American musicians; other pieces were created by white musicians using black musical styles (for example Joseph Lamb's classic ragtime compositions). A large part of the series consists of songs about African-Americans (minstrel show songs, "coon songs"), often written in dialect and usually filled with negative stereotypes. Most, but not all, of the composers of this material were white. Subseries 3.1-3.7 are organized by musical genre and arranged by the chronological first appearance of the genre in American popular culture. The last subseries, 3.8, is a composer/performer aggregation including many musical genres but only African-American musicians. The DeVincent Collection holds a wealth of ragtime material which forms an important part of series 3. There are approximately 530 items of vocal ragtime and approximately 2,800 instrumental ragtime items. The principle composers of ragtime have separate folders and are indexed by name (however, some of their material may be in the general ragtime folders). One of the strengths of the DeVincent ragtime file is its diversity and inclusion of lesser-known figures. Sam DeVincent built the ragtime section with a broad conception of the genre, a conception in keeping with the thinking of the time. Characteristic two-steps, syncopated marches, and some dances from the ragtime dance craze (turkey trots, a few tangos, etc.) are included in the general file indicating the widespread infusion of ragtime rhythms into American popular music during the early 20th century.
