King of Ragtime music Scott Joplin, the "King of Ragtime" music, was born near Linden, Texas on November 24, 1868. He moved with his family to Texarkana at the age of about seven. Even at this early age, Joplin demonstrated his extraordinary talent for music. Encouraged by his parents, he was already proficient on the banjo, and was beginning to play the piano. By age eleven and under the tutelage of Julius Weiss, he was learning the finer points of harmony and style. As a teenager, he worked as a dance musician. After several years as an itinerant pianist playing in saloons and brothels throughout the Midwest, he settled in St. Louis about 1890. There he studied and led in the development of a music genre now known as ragtimea unique blend of European classical styles combined with African American harmony and rhythm. In 1893, Joplin played in sporting areas adjacent to the Colombian Exposition in Chicago, and the following year moved to Sedalia, Missouri. From there, he toured with his eight-member Texas Medley Quartette as far east as Syracuse, New York.

Ragtime music has several categories within the genre. According to John Edward Hasse in his book Ragtime: From the Top: "There are four main types of ragtime: (1) instrumental rags, (2) ragtime songs, (3) ragtime or syncopated waltzes, and (4) 'ragging' of classics and other preexisting pieces." Our online collection contains primarily instrumental rags and ragtime songs. We have included at least one example of each of the other types. For an example of a ragtime waltz, see Mandy's Ragtime Waltz . To view a classic that was "ragged," view Paderewski Rag : a travesty on Paderewski's celebrated menuet Many modern music critics consider only the piano rags to be true ragtime music but, in the contemporary days of ragtime music, much of the public preferred the ragtime song. In fact, many instrumental rags had words added to them and were republished as ragtime songs, and ragtime songs were also republished in instrumental versions. We have many examples of both the instrumental version and the song of the same title and have included both in this collection. For example, Dill Pickles by Charles L. Johnson, published in 1907, was also published as

MIDI Web Sites with Ragtime Music
    By Bill Finch
As a collector (and out of necessity a repairman) of Mechanical Musical Instruments I always felt that the music was the most important thing. After all, when we can get the things to work they play music. After seeing Warren Trachtman's post on MMD a few days ago, I was reminded that there is a very rich resource of ragtime (mostly piano) music out there on the web. Warren and several others have collected and sequenced rags in MIDI format for everyone to enjoy. The attached URL's below will blow you away (not literally I hope). You can listen and download to your heart's (and ear's) content. If someone's waiting for you to fix the fence or faucet I apologize in advance for the large amount of time that you are likely to spend at these sites. You'll be happy and informed, and it's too cold (or wet, or hot, or windy) to fix the fence right now anyway. http://www.trachtman.org/ragtime/ http://members.aol.com/ragtimers/ http://www.geocities.com/Broadway/Stage/7699/index.html http://primeshop.com/midlist2.htm#new Bill Finch

    Ragtime Music
Ragtime music first appeared in the early part of the 20th century, rising in the 1890's and fading away by 1920. It is one of the first purely American musical syles and has strong African-American influences.
Originally created by professional performers in honky-tonks and saloons, 'ragtime' evolved as a distinct style through the years as piano players began to compete with each other.
    Scott Joplin
The king of ragtime music writers, Scott Joplin brought ragtime to its classic form. An American composer and pianist, he was one of the most important developers of ragtime music. He elevated the "piano rag" to an artistic level unmatched before or since.
Born in Texarkana, Texas, Joplin taught himself to play the piano as a child, learning mostly classical music from a German neighbour. In his late teens he became an itinerant pianist in the low-life districts that provided the chief employment for many of the local black musicians. He settled in St. Louis in 1885. In 1893 he played at the  World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and in 1894 he moved to Sedalia, Missouri.

Many good ragtime songs were written by Scott Joplin, who lived around St. Louis Missouri in the late 1800's and early 1900's. He was known as the "King of Ragtime." Many of my midi files were written by Scott Joplin, but far from all of them. The three main Ragtime composers included: Scott Joplin, James Scott and Joseph Lamb. Others include: Joseph Northrup, Jellyroll Morton, and Eubie Blake. (Refer to the list at the bottom of this page) Unfortunately, Jazz began to influence Ragtime music after about 1910 or so, and eventually ragtime died out completely as Jazz became more dominant. Two examples of Jazz influence include: "Jelly Roll Blues" and "Kansas City Stomp," which show progressively more Jazz influence. This tended to ruin the pure "ragged-time" feeling and the true spirit of Ragtime music. Jellyroll Morton, and Eubie Blake, I believe, died fairly recently.

Eighteen-ninety-nine, late in the year, Scott Joplin's first successful rag "The Maple Leaf Rag" is published out in Sedalia, Missouri. Prior to that, by the way, he had had another rag published in Kansas City. We're talking 1899. Now the underground is finally beginning to surface, to simplify it, and to begin its takeover of popular music, which will take some time. Joplin's rags were not the first rags and it's only fair to say that as much as we, I, love the music of Scott Joplin, who has emerged as "the" master and certainly with good cause, was only one of thousands who were doing this. He happens to have been the best, but to say that Joplin himself, with his emergence in 1899, started the whole thing is nonsense. It would be like saying there was only one rock group in Liverpool in 1962. I mean Joplin was one of many. Ragtime songs are out there. There is the beginning of syncopation in lyrics of songs. There is the beginning of syncopation in marches and in instrumental pieces, but ragtime as a full development, as "the" thing, as the one that the critics are now saying, "Wow, what's going on here," had not happened yet. It's simmering. It's going to take some time for the pianists, not to mention the ears of Americans, to say, "What is that? Wow, I like that. What are they playing, Harriet? I mean it's exciting. What do they call that? Oh, they call it rag time," two words in those days, they hyphenated, then one word. A phenomenon. Again, we don't know about a lot of this.
