A RAGTIME COMPENDIUM
Version 1.2 (31 May, 2002)

Because their download times are so much longer and storage becomes an issue for most of us, the search by the compiler for MP3 renditions has not been as thorough as that for MIDI renditions. A note has been made on the spreadsheet for titles where there is no MIDI rendition, but a MP3 rendition is known to exist (50). These MP3 renditions can be readily found using web search engines. The compendium also includes the details of 34 Readily Available Sheet Music folios that contain (with some duplication) 588 different titles. This material has been kindly made available by Sakae Watanabe of Japan. This web page is my contribution to the ragtime arena, and particularly to the MIDI area that has given me so much enjoyment. I hope this material will aid other interested people to find tunes they would like to hear and that it will also encourage players/sequencers to address some of the presently unpresented tunes. It is hopefully also a source of scores for performers. If not, then for the effort that has gone into this compendium, Sillyass , sequenced for me by my colleague David Beattie and appearing here with his permission, is a good description for the compiler.

Ragtime music
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Ragtime music is an American musical genre, enjoying its peak popularity around the year . Ragtime was preceded by its close relative the Cakewalk , but the emergence of mature ragtime is usually dated to , the year in which several important early rags were published. In Scott Joplin 's Maple Leaf Rag was published, which became a great hit and demonstrated more depth and sophistication than earlier ragtime. Ragtime is usually seen as one of the main precursors of jazz (along with the blues ). Jazz largely surpassed ragtime in mainstream popularity in the early , although ragtime compositions continue to be written up to the present, and periodic revivals of popular interest in ragtime occurred in the and the Ragtime is mostly associated with the piano , but was and is also performed on other instruments, such as the guitar or banjo , or by groups of musicians.

Songs, Music, Sheet Music the History of Tin Pan Alley and Its Publishing Houses We present a study on the Tin Pan Alley publishing house:
PART II We are going to use this space during the next few weeks to present the Tin Pan Alley publishing houses of the early XXth century, along with some examples of their production, today a fast growing collectibles market. Be sure to bookmark this page and return in about 10 days to read about one of the other Tin Pan Alley publishers. This enterprise was established in 1886 and was bought out eventually by Warner and the Hollywood interests in 1929. The Witmark "Sons" were Isidore (1869-1941), Julius (1870-1929) and Jay (1877-1950)- the Whiz Kids of Tin Pan Alley! They were respectively 17, 16 and 14 when they started their publishing business. The boys were songwriters and carried out a small but successful home business as music printers until their own pieces, especially one by Isidore, started to become what one could call "popular". In fact, the meager royalties given to Isidore by Willis Woodward for his first songs, "A Mother Is A Mother After All", and "A Sister’s Lullaby" caused them to form their own music publishing company. As they were minors at the time, their father Marcus formed the company in his own name but evidently had little real intervention in it. They were the first to publish "professional copies" and to provide them gratuitously to performers, as well as free orchestration.

What is Ragtime ?
Ragtime originated with Black American musicians and is considered to be an early form of Jazz. Like Classical music it is very sophisticated, usually composed and is very similiar to marches. It appears to have gradually evolved out of musical pieces known as "cake walks", with the first true rag being the "Louisiana Rag", published in Oct. 1897, by Theodore H. Northrup. Ben Harney, sometimes referred as the "originator of Rag", was first to publish compositions known as "rags" but they were little more than cake walks. Encyclopedia Americana describes Ragtime as a music generally played on the piano with "highly rhythmic with a steady beat..." with "synopated melodies, played by the right hand...that contrast with the steady strong-and-weak alternations... played by the left hand." Also described as "embodying the prototypical melodic outline AABBCCDD", with "frequently a repeat of A interpolated between the C and D sections."

Jazz and Ragtime Music Page The purpose of this page is to provide a small sample of high quality MIDI files of songs by my personal musical heroes. A few of them were sequenced by me, others I found and collected here. Also, my school has required a few research papers, which I chose to write about musical topics. Keep coming back, and look for my selections. Papers: Glenn Miller A biography of the band leader with MIDI files of his best songs. Already a Glenn Miller expert? Try the QUIZ. Invisible Piano Players : A history of the player piano. MIDI Only: Scott Joplin Count Basie Duke Ellington Classical ... Others: I don't have enough to make a seperate category yet... Christmas Music: These are not the most traditional forms of the carols... I will try to update this list frequently whenever I find/write more midi files, or write more related papers (mostly for school projects, that are usually graded by the teacher and never seen again ... so I will post them here and you can look at them.) Ragtime jazz sprouted in St. Louis in the late nineteenth century. Centered around the Chestnut Hill area between Chestnut and Market around 20th Street, clubs in the Mill Creek Valley were a hotbed of new rag and improvisational music. Tom Turpin's Rosebud Cafe was a gathering place for these musicians and composers as well as those following their music. Scott Joplin worked as a piano player at the Rosebud during his two stints in St. Louis, and wrote his classic ragtime "The Entertainer" there. W. C. Handy's "St. Louis Blues" originated from the music experience in the Chestnut Hill area, giving St. Louis both a reputation for and heritage of jazz as the genre gained strong national attention starting in the 1920s.
